The Impact of Imports on Price-Cost Margins: An Empirical Illustration AgEcon
Lopez, Rigoberto A.; Lopez, Elena.
This article decomposes the impact of imports on domestic price-cost margins into separate price and cost effects. Using data from 24 food-processing industries, the empirical results show that although the direct impact of imports on prices is always negative, a positive net impact on price-cost margins occurs in industries characterized by low own-price elasticity of demand and diseconomies of scale. Further results show that the disciplining effect of imports is more preponderant the lower the degree of domestic competition.

A METODOLOGIA DA PRODUÇÃO MAIS LIMPA EM EMPRESAS RURAIS AgEcon

Importance of EU Label Requirements: An Application of Ordered Probit Models to Belgium Beef Labels AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Ward, Ronald W..
The objective of this paper is to determine which information cues related to quality and origin really attract consumer interest, specified as the level of attention paid to and perceived importance attached to label cues. The focus is (1) on indications of quality through quality marks, (2) on indications referring to the mandatory European beef labelling regulation, and (3) on indications reflecting origin. Data are collected from a sample of 278 beef consumers in Belgium. Ordered probit models are specified and estimated to assess the impact of household characteristics and a beef labeling information campaign. Findings reveal that consumer interest is generally low for traceability, moderate for origin and high for direct indications of quality....

Beef Supply Response Under Uncertainty: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model AgEcon
Mbaga, Msafiri Daudi; Coyle, Barry T..
This is the first econometric study of dynamic beef supply response to incorporate risk aversion or, more specifically, price variance. Autoregressive distributed lag (ADL) models are estimated for cow-calf and feedlot operations using aggregate data for Alberta. In all cases, output price variance has a negative impact on output supply and investment. Moreover, the impacts of expected price on supply response are greater in magnitude and significance than in risk-neutral models.

MODELING MULTIFUNCTIONALITY OF AGRICULTURE AT A FARM-LEVEL: THE CASE OF KERKINI DISTRICT, NORTHERN GREECE AgEcon
Vassalos, Michael; Dillon, Carl R.; Freshwater, David; Karanikolas, Pavlos.
Multifuncionality has become a central concern at both conceptual and empirical levels. In this study, a comparative evaluation of the economic performance of conventional and multifunctional farms (mainly organic farms) was conducted for the Lake Kerkini region (North Greece) with the use of mixed integer non-linear programming method. The economic performance of farms was evaluated in terms of farm income, resource allocation, production level and production mix. The results indicate that multifunctional farms have overall better economic performance and young farm managers are keener to adopt multifunctional farming than the older ones. Differences between the model results and the observed facts are attributed to the structural characteristics of the...

AN ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF THE WHOLE-FARM IMPACT OF PRECISION AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Olson, Kent D.; Elisabeth, Pascal.
The full impact of an investment in a management information system (MIS), such as precision agriculture (PA), comes from improved managerial decision making throughout the whole farm and not just from improvements in a specific part of the farm. This study was conducted to determine whether the adoption of PA had a positive impact on whole-farm profitability. To overcome problems of simultaneity and self-selection in the adoption decision of PA, this study used a two stage econometric model using data from farms in Southwest Minnesota. The PA adoption decision was evaluated in the first stage, and the impact of adopting PA was evaluated in the second stage. The whole farm rate of return to assets (ROA) was used to measure the impact of PA. For all 212...

Discussion: Commodity Price Discovery: Problems That Have Solutions or Solutions That Are Problems AgEcon
Fortenbery, T. Randall.
This paper examines three invited papers focused on commodity prices. Public responses to high nominal commodity prices and perceived increases in price risk have ranged from attempts to assign blame, attempts to change contracting arrangements, and development of public policy that ‘‘protects’’ the market from future occurrences of unacceptable behavior. Interestingly, a result of increased commodity price volatility has suggested that futures markets no longer ‘‘work.’’ This is ironic given that futures markets initially came into existence as tools for managing the negative impacts of commodity price risk. In response to perceptions of market failure some are looking for strategies to regulate the who and how of futures trading.

CONTINUIDAD DE EMPRESAS FAMILIARES RURALES Y URBANAS DEL MUNICIPIO EXHENEQUENERO DE DZIDZANTÚN EN EL ESTADO DE YUCATÁN AgEcon
Tamayo Manrique, Jose Maria; Tamayo Cortez, Jorge Abraham; Madero Llanes, Jorge Emeterio; Monforte Mendez, Gustavo Adolfo.
Nowadays, more than the 90% of the companies in Mexico (IPADE 2000) are companies that belong to families; therefore, they play a dominant role in the economy. The goal of this investigation is to indicate which factors affect, in a differential way, the rural and urban family business at Dzidzantun municipality in Yucatan State. The study of four family's companies of the municipality of Dzidzantun will help to explain which factors affect the continuity in this type of companies. Among outstanding factors in the research appears the family cohesion, good communication among the family members and the lack of training. The results could let the entrepreneurs develop a new perspective about continuity in their business: a valuable family patrimony.

Would Functional Agricultural Foods Improve Human Health? AgEcon
Traill, W. Bruce; Arnoult, Matthieu H.; Chambers, Stephanie A.; Deaville, E.R.; Gordon, Michael H.; John, P.; Jones, Philip J.; Kliem, K.E.; Mortimer, S.R.; Tiffin, J. Richard.
Concern over diet-health relationships has moved to the forefront of public health concerns in the UK and much of the developed world. It has been estimated, for example, that obesity costs the UK National Health Service up to £6b per year (Rayner and Scarborough, 2005), but if all consumers were to follow recommended healthy eating guidelines there would be major implications for food consumption, land use and international trade (Srinivasan et al, 2006). This is unlikely to happen, at least in the short term, but it is realistic to anticipate some dietary adjustment toward the recommendations, resulting in an improvement in diet quality (Mazzocchi et al, 2007). Although consumers are reluctant to make major changes to their diets, they may be prepared to...

A Kibbutz Dilemma: Social Movement or Self-Interested Group? AgEcon
Avrahami, Eli.
One of the characteristics of the kibbutz was that it belonged to a nation-wide movement, it was open to the outside world and was involved in all aspects of society. In view of the changes taking place in the kibbutzim and in their surroundings the kibbutz may forfeit its characteristics as an assertive and centralized, or at least federative, organization. In consequence the kibbutz may cease to be a social movement seeking to attain goals of universal value and turn into an organized self-interested pressure group. The dilemma faced by the kibbutz is whether it will be a system of egotistic people seeing themselves as shrewd-calculating-yuppies, or members of a social movement seeking to attain goals of universal value, considered by others as "freiers"

Strukturwandel durch Fusionen im Ernährungssektor: Ein anhaltender Konzentrationsprozess? AgEcon
Neumann, Gyde; Weiss, Christoph R..
Mergers and acquisitions substantially affect the structure of the German food industry. This study analyses changes in the number of mergers and acquisitions for 21 German industries between 1976 and 1994. The results of an econometric panel data analysis show (a) a high degree of persistence, (b) distinct anti-cyclical fluctuations and a positive trend of merger activities as well as (c) significant effects of industry specific characteristics. Contrary to the available empirical literature the econometric model differentiates between industry characteristics of “acquiring” and “acquired” firms.

Effects of the Conservation Reserve Program on Elevator Merchandising Margins in Oklahoma AgEcon
Adam, Brian D.; Hong, Seung Jee; Dicks, Michael R..
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) takes cropland out of production for 10 years, reducing grain supplies available to elevators. Results suggest that the program has negatively impacted elevator merchandising margins, but that elevators adjusted rather quickly to CRP changes, making most of the adjustment within 1 year. The reduction in margins reflects an element of pressure on agribusiness that has not been measured in previous studies.

Envesting in an Agricultural Legacy: Impact of a Targeted Young and Beginning Farmer Loan Program in Arkansas AgEcon
Goeringer, L. Paul; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Dixon, Bruce L.; Popp, Michael P..
America’s agricultural producers continue to age. According to the U.S. Census of Agriculture, the average age of farm operators increased from 55.3 in 2002 to 57.1 in 2007. During the same period, the Census shows a thirty percent decrease in the number of farmers under the age of 25. Young and beginning producers (YBPs) entering agriculture can be faced with high startup costs and the lack of land to own or rent. To address this potential shortage of future farmers, we propose a program for the Farm Credit System to assist YBPs by offering Farm Service Agency guaranteed loans. In this program YBPs are given concessionary interest rates in consideration for adopting conservation and recommended “best” practices. To gauge the impact of the loan...

Agroholdings in Russia: Breaking the Vicious Circle? AgEcon
Hockmann, Heinrich; Wandel, Jurgen; Nedoborovskyy, Andriy.
The paper discusses the accelerated emergence of agroholdings in the Russian Federation. It is argued that the foundation of these highly integrated structures I due to the special (macro-) economic and institutional condition of the transition process in Russia. Moreover, it is shown that agricultural enterprises which are part of an agroholding were lacking behind other organisational forms in terms of economic efficiency. One reason for this finding is the highly centralized decision structures which, as experiences in Western Europe shows, are only suitable for very special agricultural value chains, but not for agriculture in general.
