The diversity of nematode communities in the southern North Sea OMA
Heip, C.H.R.; Decraemer, W..
The diversity of nematode communities along the Belgian coast is influenced by the median grain size and the percentage of silt of the sediment, as <i>H</i> = 0.84 +10. 96<i>Md</i> -0.013<i>S</i>. The influence of the outlet of a small stream, the IJzer, is also clearly visible in the low diversity of communities situated to the north-east of the mouth, which is the direction of the prevailing currents. The predominating species in low-diversity communities appear to be generalists, while high specialization seems to be the rule for nematode communities as a whole.

Understanding the development of organic agriculture in Flanders(Belgium): A discourse analytical approach Organic Eprints
De Cock, Lieve; Dessein, Joost; de Krom, Michiel P..
Despite a fast-growing national consumer market for organic products and active governmental support for organic agriculture, organic production in Flanders has shown little growth since the late 1990s. Our discourse analytical approach offers important insights into the causes of the limited organic pro-duction capacity in Flanders complementary to more common political-institutional or actor-oriented perspectives. Our analysis reveals that for decades, a competition between two mutually exclusive organicfarming discourses has hindered a collaborative effort to contribute to a growth of the organic agricultural sector by conventional and organic agricultural communities, agricultural policy makers, and food market actors. Such collaboration however,...

L'élevage des volailles en agriculture biologique - LE PARCOURS AMÉNAGÉ Organic Eprints
MOERMAN, Marie; RONDIA, Alain.

Construction and Import of Ethnic Categorisations: “Allochthones” in The Netherlands and Belgium AgEcon
Jacobs, Dirk; Rea, Andrea.
Schematically one can distinguish two traditions related to ethnic statistics in Europe. In France, Germany and most southern European countries, the dominant statistical categorisations merely distinguish individuals on the basis of their nationality. In contrast, most northern European countries have been producing data on the ethnic and/or foreign origin of their populations. Belgium is caught somewhere in between these two traditions. The French speaking part of Belgium tends to follow the French tradition of refusing ethnic categorisation, while the Flemish (the Dutch speaking part) try to copy the Dutch model in distinguishing “allochthones” and “autochthones”. This contribution wants to offer an analysis of the construction of ethnic categories as...

Risk in Agriculture: Modeling Revenue Insurance for Crop Farms in Belgium AgEcon
Hansen, Kristiana; Frahan, Bruno Henry de.
With trade liberalization in the Common Agricultural Policy, farmers within the European Union are increasingly exposed to the risk of fluctuations in output price and yields. Using numerical simulation methods, we model the effects of crop insurance on farm revenues and land allocation patterns among arable crop farms in the Region of Wallonia in the south of Belgium. We employ a mathematical programming framework within which we have embedded an econometrically estimated, farm-specific cost function that allows us to analyze the farm-specific effects of crop insurance.

Actuarial evaluation of the EU proposed farm income stabilisation tool AgEcon
Pigeon, Mathieu; Frahan, Bruno Henry de; Denuit, Michel.
Recently, the European Commission proposed to introduce several risk management tools in the rural development pillar 2 of the CAP. One of them consists in providing co-financing support to mutual funds compensating farmers who experience a severe drop in their farm income. This paper analyses this new farm income stabilization tool for the Walloon region in Belgium, considering separately three groups of farms (crop, dairy and cattle farms). Relying on FADN data from 1997 to 2007, this analysis focuses on estimating the probability that such regional mutual funds would need to intervene to compensate farm net incomes and, in that case, the expected amount of each farm income compensation and the total expected amount of compensation. The budgetary...

Consumer Attitude and Behaviour Towards "Flandria" Quality Labelled Tomatoes AgEcon
van de Velde, Liesbeth; D'Hooghe, Katrien; Kuhne, Bianka; Verbeke, Wim.
In recent years, trust in food safety and food quality has decreased as a result of consecutive food crises. Consequently, numerous quality labels signalling credence characteristics have been established. One of these labels is the Belgian Flandria label for fresh fruit and vegetables. Based on a self-administered consumer survey (n=373), this paper addresses questions about consumer attitudes, behaviour and perception towards tomatoes in general, and the Flandria tomato label in particular. Principal component analysis and consumer segmentation are performed. The findings indicate that the Flandria label may have become the new standard for tomatoes and may have lost a major part of its differentiation potential by being positioned "in the middle" and...

Evaluation of an index-based risk management contract for agricultural activities AgEcon
Weynants, Stephanie; Gaspart, Frederic; Frahan, Bruno Henry de.
This paper proposes and evaluates area index-based financial contracts for specific farm activities. These financial contracts allow not only for removing moral hazard and adverse selection as index insurances do, but also for adding more flexibility and, hence, better risk protection. The evaluation of these financial contracts uses FADN farm data of Belgium from 1990 to 2007. Area indexes based on yield and yield-in-value perform well in stabilising revenues from some farm activities, but badly from some others. The variation in the estimated actuarially fair premiums across agricultural area shows the importance of designing those financial contracts according to homogenous agricultural area.

Consumer Perception of Traceability in the Meat Chain AgEcon
Gellynck, Xavier; Verbeke, Wim.
Despite growing interest in meat traceability systems, very little research has been done on consumer needs and perception of traceability. This gap is partly filled by the present study of consumer perception of meat traceability in Belgium, based on cross-sectional data collected in June 2001. Respondents are segmented, based on their subjective perception of meat quality, and differences in the perceived need for traceability systems between the various segments are investigated. Functional traceability attributes, such as organizational efficiency, chain monitoring and individual responsibility, are important to all consumers. Extensions with respect to process attributes, such as production methods, are less relevant to the general population, being...

EXPLORING INFLUENCING FACTORS ON MEAT CONSUMPTION DECISIONS THROUGH PROBIT ANALYSIS: THE CASE OF FRESH MEAT DEMAND IN BELGIUM AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Ward, Ronald W.; Viaene, Jacques.
Meat demand in Belgium has shown significant changes, especially with recent concerns about meat safety. Probit models are estimated to measure factors influencing consumer decision-making toward fresh meat. The probability of decreasing fresh meat consumption increases with greater attention to mass media stories. Demographics have a major impact, with age and presence of young children being particularly important.
