This paper includes a revision of the species considered up to now in the genus Lasiodera Gray, 1832 with a detailed study of external morphology as well as males external genitalia which made to propose the separation into two genera, Lasiodera Gray, 1832 and Philyra Laporte, 1836, beeing the second one revalidated, which is now constituted by the following species: Philyra basalis (Racca Filho & Santos, 1988) comb.n., P. helopioides Laporte, 1836 comb.n., P. jucunda (Schenkling, 1900) comb.n., P. quadrivittata (Peracchi, 1960) comb.n., P. stenochioides (Chevrolat, 1874) comb.n. and P. viridis (Pic, 1936) comb.n.. The male genital structures, showing specific differences, are illustrated and discussed. Lasiodera malleri (Pic, 1933) is considered a... |

The genus Coelosis with two subgenera, Coelosis s.str. [type species: Scarabaeus sylvanus Fabricius, 1775] and Eucoelosis subgen.n. [type species: Scarabaeus biloba Linnaeus, 1767], is revised and redescribed. Other four species: C. (C.) inermis Sternberg, 1908, C. (C.) bourgini (Dechambre, 1976), C. (Eucoelosis) hippocrates Blanchard, 1846, and C. (E.) bicornis (Leske, 1779) were recognized and redescribed. Coelosis (E.) denticornis Arrow, 1937 was not studied, and the original description is transcribed herein. New characters considered relevant for comparative studies and for species identification are presented. The subgenus Millotsis Bourgin, 1944 [type species: Coelosis inermis Sternberg, 1908] is considered a junior subjective synonym of Coelosis... |

Eggs, fifth instar larvae and pupae of A. dubia (Boheman, 1854), A. fuscata (Klug, 1829), A. languida (Boheman, 1854), A. phaeopoda Buzzi, 1976 and A. punctulata (Klug, 1829) are described. Imatures stages were reared in a stove Biometron under temperature of 25±2ºC, photophase of 12 hours and relative humidity of 80±5%. The larvae of A. dubia and A. languida were fed with leaves of Baccharis relusa DC; A. fuscata with leaves of Baccharidastrum argutum (Less) Cabrera; A. phaeopoda with leaves of Baccharis gaudichaudiana DC. and larvae of A. punctulata with leaves of Baccharis trimera (Less) A. DC.. All plants belonging to the Asteraceae. Two forms of A. fuscata were studied: A. fuscata (Klug, 1829) and A. fuscata form=unicolor (Burmeister, 1870) n.syn. and... |

In the present report, we investigate polymorphism in three of the Brazilian species of Chauliognathus Hentz, 1930 (Coleoptera, Cantharidae), by analyzing the geographical color pattern variation of the elytra in C. flavipes, C. fallax and C. octomaculatus. These species belong to the mullerian complex called the "yellow-black". They are usually found in clusters on their host plants at various locations and present similarities in the external body morphology and in the color pattern of the elytra and the pronotum. Chauliognathus flavipes is the most common species with eight phenotypic classes followed by of C. fallax and C. octomaculatus with six and two phenotypic classes respectively. The analyses indicate a statistically significant difference in the... |

The species Phaleria testacea Say, 1824 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) varies a lot in size, and its populations along the coast of Brazil, where it lives buried in sandy beaches, have temporal and geographical variation in density. In order to find out which factors were contributing to these variations, we sampled populations from three different areas in Rio de Janeiro, during summer and winter. Simultaneously, we made an analysis of the different substracts where the individuals were found, including their total fresh weight. The results show a significant difference in size of individuals between and within populations, when summer and winter were compared. There is also a positive association between the population density of P. testacea and the amount... |

This study presents data on morphometric variation for length and width of elytra in tive sympatric species of the genus Chauliognathus Hentz, 1830: C. flavipes Fabricius, 1781, C. octomaculatus Pie, 1915, C. expansus Waterhouse, 1878, C. fallax Germar, 1824 and C. lineatus Zwetsch & Machado, 2000. The meaning of this variation is discussed in the light of the theory of mimicry and visual communication between prey and predator. Females are larger than males in all species, except C. expansus. The analysis of variance for length of elytron as well as for width showed that the differences between species are significant for males and females; significant interaction (sex x species) was also found. The similarity in color pattern of these species, as... |

This is the first report of an ongoing study on arthropofauna of forensic importance in Callao, Peru using a baby pig (Sus scrofa Linneaus, 1758) on land as a model to determine the arthropofauna over 84 days of weekly survey between 17 July and 02 October 2 000. A total of 4,405 specimens were collected belonging to five orders and eight families: Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius, 1775) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) (81.62%); Dermestes maculatus (De Geer, 1774) (Coleoptera, Dermestidae) (16.35%); Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus, 1761) (Diptera, Muscidae) (0.04%); Saprinus aeneus (Fabricius, 1775) (Coleoptera, Histeridae) (1.48%); Necrobia rufipes (De Geer, 1775) (Coleoptera, Cleridae) (0.45%); Linepithema humile (Mayr, 1868) (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) (0.02%);... |
