This experiment investigated the benefits of feeding steers bred from parents known to be of high genetic merit for feed efficiency (HE; midparent net feed intake-estimated breeding value (NFI-EBV) ≤-0.3kg/day), medium efficiency (ME: midparent NFI-EBV >-0.3 to 0.14 kg/day), or low efficiency (LE; midparent NFI-EBV ≥0.16kg/day). The steers were evaluated over a 251-day feeding period in a large commercial feedlot. Genetic superiority in NFI had a favourable impact on the commercial performance of Angus steers by reducing feed consumed with no adverse effect on final turnoff weight. Each HE steer consumed on average 2.60t of feed compared to 2.87t by the ME and LE steers, with no compromise in weight gain. The HE steers gained less subcutaneous ribfat... |

In this work the effects of large- and short-term debts on efficiency are tested on a set of agricultural firms. Accounting data of crop, livestock, mixed and service firms are used. First, the efficiencies of the farms are obtained by using nonparametric methods (input-oriented DEA). Then, in a second stage, censored regressions are run with different kinds of explicative variables, including financial ratios. The results show a significative and positive relationship between short-term indebtedness and efficiency, which would be agree with some theories positing that firms with higher short-run obligations make additional efforts to satisfy their payments, and this leads to an improvement of efficiency. |

Taking Wuqi country, shanxi Province as an example, this paper is based on the introductions of the researched regions and according to the planting model and some factors influencing economy. After systematic analysis and selection, it selects ecological forestry, wood-grass-husbandry, wood-grass-husbandry, wood-medicine, economic forestry and greenhouse vegetable these five models of returning farming to grass, with Wuqi town, Baibaotown, Wu Cangbao county, Xinzhai county, Xuecha county and Wugu town these five sites as examples. This paper has carried out a research on these 5 models at country, town and household levels through Participatory Rural Appraisal and Document Search to gain the related data. And making a comparison on the contribute of the 5... |

The status quo of resource allocation of agricultural science and technology R&D (research and development)both at home and abroad, including the amount and function of agricultural science and technology research funds, human resources in the resources of agricultural science and technology R&D , the efficiency of resource allocation of agricultural science and technology R&D, the management system of agricultural scientific innovation and the operation status of scientific funds, is analyzed. The problems in the current resource allocation of agricultural science and technology R&D are put forward. For instance, unreasonable resource allocation;, low efficiency, and low efficiency of the transformation of agricultural scientific results.... |

To assist in meeting the target outcomes for the Beef CRC, Sustainable Beef Profit Partnership (BPP) teams meet regularly to measure their current performance, set targets for future productivity increases, and use a profitability framework to assess the potential impact of improvements, innovations and new technologies in their beef businesses. Their decisions and actions are based on the Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) process. Capacity building and partnership outcomes are also assessed and the BPP teams are supported with appropriate tools and resources. In this final paper in this special edition, some recent developments in the design and management of the BPP project are discussed and the opportunities such a project presents to... |

The abolishment of the dairy quota system in the EU is expected to increase competition across dairy farms in Europe. Assuming a common price for milk in the EU, only the most efficient farms will survive in the new environment. The main objective of the paper is to compare dairy farms in Germany, The Netherlands and Hungary about their technical efficiency. In the first part of the research, the efficiency is measured by partial efficiency indexes using one dimensional efficiency measuring. In the second part, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) have to be used to measure efficiency in a multidimensional space, using six inputs and two outputs. It appears from the results that the highest efficiency farms are in the Netherlands, and then Germany and... |

With the enforcement of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD), policy makers are required to pursue the improvement of the use efficiency of the water resources in the agricultural sector. For this purpose, we suggest a methodology to perform an ex-ante analysis of the efficiency of water pricing policies, based on a two stage DEA technique, by which it is possible to disaggregate the technical and the ecological efficiency of the policy. According to our results, we found that, coherently with the WFD principles, the direct pricing methods show the highest levels of efficiency. However, we have also found that some indirect pricing methods show relatively high levels of efficiency. Therefore, since the high cost for the management and... |

This study examined changes in agricultural productivity at Benin in the context of diverse institutional arrangements using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).A time series data which consists of information on agricultural production and means of production were obtained from World Research Institute database, INSAE and rainfall data from AMMA database. The information was for a 43-year period (1961-2003); DEA method was used to measure Malquist index of total factor productivity to evaluate technical change efficiency and technological efficiency change across the country’s 12 provinces. A decomposition of TFP measures revealed whether the performance of factors productivity is due to technological change or technical efficiency change over the reference... |

The impact of group affiliation to agroholdings on enterprise performance in terms of productivity and efficiency is controversially discussed in the literature. However, only few papers evaluate the effects of group membership on the productivity and the efficiency of agricultural enterprises in Russia. The underlying research question of this paper is therefore whether farms that belong to agroholdings perform better than independent farms. We calculate partial land and labor productivity, total factor productivity and technical efficiency scores for the two categories of independent farms and members of agroholdings. In this paper a production function approach is estimated in the framework of stochastic frontier analysis. The results are used to... |

The efficiency of public education is examined using a cost indirect output distance function. Efficiency estimates are obtained using data envelopment analysis applied to data from Georgia public schools. Georgia school districts utilize educational budgets with reasonable efficiency, achieving an overall efficiency of 98% with a range of 93%-100%. If all school districts were 100% efficient, outputs could be expanded 2%. This could be achieved by increasing funding $75.46 million state-wide in total for each of the 3 years. From the consumers’ (voters) point of view, this result suggests that inefficiency costs Georgia, on average, a total of $226.38 million from 1994 to 1996. |

Engineering models generally find that most consumers are unwilling to adopt energy efficient appliances, even though the financial returns are positive. It is commonly thought that this is either due to market imperfections such as an incomplete credit market, very high intertemporal consumer discount rates, or irrational behavior. This paper presents a more sanguine explanation based on a model of rational dynamic choice in an uncertain environment. A random utility model (RUM) with consumer preferences that depend on the quality mix of energy-using appliances predicts that under plausible conditions - including the consumer's intertemporal discount rate equal to the real market rate of return on risk free investments - it may well be optimal for... |
