ANÁLISE DOS VALORES DOS PRODUTORES RURAIS FRENTE À COOPERATIVA AO QUAL ESTÃO ASSOCIADOS AgEcon
Leitao, Fabricio Oliveira; Brisola, Marlon Vinicius.

U.S. Organic Farming Emerges in the 1990s: Adoption of Certified Systems AgEcon
Greene, Catherine R..
Farmers have been developing organic farming systems in the United States for decades. State and private institutions also began emerging during this period to set organic farming standards and provide third-party verification of label claims, and legislation requiring national standards was passed in the 1990s. More U.S. producers are considering organic farming systems in order to lower input costs, conserve nonrenewable resources, capture high-value markets, and boost farm income. Organic farming systems rely on practices such as cultural and biological pest management, and virtually prohibit synthetic chemicals in crop production and antibiotics or hormones in livestock production. This report updates U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates of...

A whole-farm investment analysis of some precision agriculture technologies AgEcon
Knight, Brad; Malcolm, Bill.
This study used information about a farm in the Victorian Mallee during the period 1998 – 2005 to analyse the profitability of investing in Precision Agriculture and Site-Specific Crop Management technology and farming systems. Two equipment guidance systems were evaluated. Both guidance systems earned more than 8 percent real return p.a. on the extra capital invested. A Real-Time Kinetic (RTK) guidance system with a precision of 2 cm and a capital cost of $50,000 was less profitable than a Sub-Metre guidance system with 20 cm accuracy and costing $20,000. Producers investing in RTK guidance technology would be well-paid to also adopt supporting management practices that enhance crop gross margins or provide other benefits. The capital cost of GPS...

Water management development and agriculture in Syria AgEcon
Haddad, George; Szeles, Ivett; Zsarnoczai, J. Sandor.
Irrigated agriculture has increased steadily in Syria over the last decades, almost doubling since 1985. This mounting pace has responded to the nation’s food security policy objectives to satisfy the food production needs of an increasing population that features one of the largest growth rates in the world, namely 3,50 percent in 1985 and still 3,39 percent in 2007. Total expenditures for irrigated agriculture accounted for almost 70 percent of all expenditures in agriculture. Sustainable irrigation water policies aimed at increasing the efficiency of water use in agriculture and at conserving water resources by reducing future consumption. The Euphrates River is 2.800 km long and its middle traverses a wide floodplain in Syria, where it is used...

A structural change analysis of the cost efficiency of farms in Scotland 1989-2008 AgEcon
Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Leat, Philip M.K.; Milne, Catherine E..
One of the aims of the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is to increase the competitiveness of farmers through increasing their exposure to markets. An aspect of competitiveness is the gains in economic efficiency. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to estimate indicators of farm efficiency for the period 1989 to 2008 by farm type and to analyse what the effect on efficiency of changes in the CAP has been. In terms of the methodology, the information used comes from the Scottish Farm Account Scheme (FAS) survey, which allows us to assemble panel dataset and to construct cost efficiency indicators. The results indicate while mixed farms and lowland farms have maintain their levels of efficiency. LFA farms have seen their efficiency reduced...

An analysis of milk quota abolition impact on Scottish farmers’ behaviour AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; Barnes, Andrew Peter; Renwick, Alan W..
This paper analyses factors influencing Scottish dairy farmers’ intentions to change size of business in response to milk quota abolition. The analysis uses structural equation modelling and is based on survey data collected in 2009 through telephone interviews with 533 farmers. Results suggest that farmers who (1) intend to leave their farm to children; (2) have not inherited their farm from previous generation; (3) perceive a lower impact of milk quota abolition on business; (4) have less negative attitudes towards policies/regulations; and (5) perceived a lower influence of policies/markets on business during the past decade are most likely to increase farm size.

On-Farm Benchmarking: How to Do It and How to Do It Better AgEcon
Franks, J.R.; Collis, Jimi.
Benchmarking is the practice of establishing the relative performance of a business or enterprise against an appropriate standard, generally industry standards derived from a survey of farms. The Policy Commission into the Future of Farming and Food (2002) highlighted a need to spread and improve benchmarking on farms. The requirements of effective benchmarking are illustrated in a ten step framework. The ten steps illustrate the range of expertise and resources a manager requires before being able to justify allocating resources to benchmarking. A comparison of alternative farm surveys and methodologies used to collect, analyse and report industry standards illustrates the difficulties farmers can have in identifying appropriate, robust and accurate...

An Exploratory Study to Assess European Consumers' Opinion about a Beef Quality Guarantee System AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Van Wezemael, Lynn; Barcellos, Marcia Dutra de; Kugler, Jens O.; Chryssochoidis, George M.; Ueland, Oydis; Grunert, Klaus G..
Consumer demand in relation to food is increasingly shifting towards products that are safe, nutritious, and of good eating quality. Beef consumers are demanding for experience quality that matches their quality expectations formed prior to consumption, particularly with respect to beef tenderness. The development of a beef quality guarantee system, backed up by objective knowledge obtained through muscle profiling research, can allow the beef industry to meet these consumer demands. A qualitative consumer study has been carried out to assess European consumers’ opinions about beef quality and beef related technologies. This paper reports on consumer opinions and perceptions about muscle profiling and a beef quality guarantee system. Findings indicate that...

Economics and politics of water resources development: Uda Walawe Irrigation Project, Sri Lanka AgEcon
Molle, Francois; Renwick, Mary E..
The Uda Walawe Irrigation and Resettlement Project (UWIRP) located in the Southern dry zone of Sri Lanka was initiated in the early 1950s. The original plan for the UWIRP was a highly ambitious social, economic and physical engineering project aimed at creating a modern, profitable agriculture sector. This report examines the history of water resources development and investment decisions for the UWIRP over a period of 50 years and uncovers underlying processes that shaped the evolution of the project and highlights the limitation of viewing development as a mere set of technical and social engineering endeavors.

FARMER EDUCATION AND ADOPTION OF SLASH AND BURN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Schuck, Eric C.; Nganje, William E.; Yantio, Debazou; Aquach, Emmanuel.
Education can play a critical role in moving farmers in developing countries away from environmentally harmful slash and burn agriculture. The present research examines the extent to which extension education can promote adoption of cropping systems other than slash and burn. Choice of cropping system by farmers in Cameroon, whether slash and burn, multiple crops, or mono-cropping, is modeled as a function of farm size, farmer educational level, and visits by extension personnel. Results indicate that higher visitation rates by extension personnel reduce not only the likelihood of farmers choosing slash and burn agriculture, but also promotes movement into mono-cropping. Since mono-cropping represents a move toward export-oriented agriculture in...

Financial Returns and Capital Requirements for Optimum Pasture Improvement Plans AgEcon
Pearse, Robert A..
Since World War II there has been a rapid increase in the area sown to improved pastures in Australia generally and New South Wales in particular. Despite this increase there has been much speculation as to the reasons why even more country has not been improved, especially as spectacular increases in carrying capacity result. There have been a number of studies of economic aspects of pasture improvement stimulated by these observations. This study is intended to extend or supplement them, because much of the previous work has been somewhat limited. The objects of this paper are to:- (1) Outline the basic asumptions on which the whole study is based. (2) Determine, where finance is provided from savings supplemented by reinvestment of all profits (when...

Evaluating Different Growth Scenarios for Organic Farming Using Bayesian Techniques AgEcon
Gardebroek, Cornelis.
Different views exist on the future development of organic agriculture. The Dutch government believes that in 2010 10% of the farm land will be used for organic farming. Others have a more radical view: due to increasing emphasis on sustainable production in the end all farming will be organic. Others believe in a more pessimistic scenario in which the recent growth in organic was just a temporary upswing and that the share of organic farmers already reached its maximum. In this paper different potential scenarios for the further growth of organic farming are evaluated using Bayesian techniques. A nonlinear logistic growth model explaining the share of organic farms is estimated using available historical data for Dutch agriculture. Various scenarios imply...

CHANGES IN FARM PRODUCTION UNDER INTENSIVE FARM MANAGEMENT ADVICE AgEcon
Southcombe, F.J.; Mauldon, Roger G..
This investigation examines the impact of intensive farm management advice on levels and productivities of resource use on samples of farms. A total of 60 members of 13 farm management advisory services and 60 non-members, matched by locality, were studied in two farming regions of Western Australia. A production model has been formulated and analysed which discriminates between effects of differences and changes in resource use and productivity over time and between members and non-members. Major differences between members and non-members over time have been rates of growth of inputs and outputs rather than systematic changes of production relationships.
