Diet and potential feeding overlap between Trichiurus lepturus (Osteichthyes: Perciformes) and Pontoporia blainvillei (Mammalia: Cetacea) in Northern Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bittar,Vanessa T.; Di Beneditto,Ana Paula M..
This study describes the diet and assesses potential overlap in the feeding habits of Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus, 1758 and Pontoporia blainvilleiGervais & D'Orbigny, 1844 in northern Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Fishes were numerically dominant in both diets, followed by cephalopods for P. blainvillei and crustaceans for T. lepturus. Both predators move along similar coastal feeding areas in northern Rio de Janeiro, but our results indicate differences in their resource exploitation, what allows for their coexistence.

Ingestive behavior and efficacy of male sheep housed in different stocking densities R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa,Roberto Germano; Ribeiro,Neila Lidiany; Nobre,Priscila Torres; Carvalho,Francisco Fernando Ramos de; Medeiros,Ariosvaldo Nunes de; Martins,Fabrício Ehm.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of housing density on ingestive behavior of male Santa Inês sheep housed individually and in double. Forty non-castrated males were used with an average initial weight of 21.33±2.62 kg and an average age of 120 days. The males were housed in two types of covered stalls: double stalls (two males/stall) of 3.0 m2 and individual stalls of 1.50 m2. Animals housed in individual stalls spent more time ruminating and less time eating than those in double stalls. These animals also spent more time in idleness. Sheep idled approximately 11.43 hours/day (47% of the time), which can be explained by the shorter time spent in rumination, considering that the diet used in this experiment had adequate...

What mineral and vitamin levels to recommend in swine diets? R. Bras. Zootec.
Gaudré,Didier; Quiniou,Nathalie.
Minerals, including trace-elements, and vitamins are currently introduced into the pig diet in order to obtain suitable performances for the modern pig genotype bred in confinement. Most of the mineral and vitamin contents of cereals and usual protein compounds are characterized by their poor and variable availability. Supplemental diets are then usually needed. This paper, based on literature data, reviews the pig requirement for minerals and vitamins in order to ensure economic and profitable performance. Recent research has focused on phosphorus due to environmental considerations. The widespread use of microbial phytase has decreased the need for inorganic phosphates. Cereals are particularly deficient in calcium and sodium, consequently limestone and...

Physical-chemical properties of meat from confined lambs with different levels of cottonseed in the diet Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Pellegrini,Luiz Gustavo de; Richards,Neila Silvia Pereira dos Santos; Mello,Renius de Oliveira; Venturini,Rafael Sanches; Carvalho,Sérgio.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of cottonseed (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 g Kg-1) on the physical and chemical parameters of the meat of finishing lambs. Forty-five uncastrated male lambs were distributed in a completely randomised design with five treatments of nine replications. The pH values were not influenced by the levels of cottonseed. The lipid and ash content showed significant differences, but were not adjusted by the linear or quadratic equations. Losses during thawing increased, as did cohesiveness, and water activity and water retention capacity decreased as the levels of cottonseed in the diet rose. Tocopherols, cooking loss, toughness and chewiness were adjusted using quadratic equations. In the...

Management and disease of Brazilian chelonians in urban captivity MV&Z
Flosi, Francis Magno; Garcia, Jerusa Martins; Pugliese, Claudete; Sanchez, Andrea Aranha; Klai, Aparecido.
Brazilian chelonians belong to the following families: Testudinidae (tortoises), Chelidae, Emydidae, Pelomedusidae, Kinostemidae (turtles and terrapins). Many species belonging to these families are kept in domestic captivity and need appropriate management, including nutrition provided by feed formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of each species. By doing so, one can prevent several diseases induced by inadequate management, such as the frequent shell deformities and vitamin deficiencies, especially those regarding vitamin A. The need to preserve these animals as well as their ecosystem is also stressed.
