This report describes the working processes and results of the bachelor project “Redesign of insect trap for biological pest control”. The project is based on research on pheromones and the project SoftPest Multitrap. Copenhagen Uni-versity’s Science and Life Sciences, more specifically Department of Plant andEnvironmental Sciences has researched and developed the pheromones for mass trapping of the Strawberry Blossom Weevil (Anthonomus Rubi) and the European Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus Rugulipennis). The user processes associated with the insect trap were analysed through fieldstudies and a participatory design process. The analysis resulted in a design brief and a product specification. The SoftPest Multitrap proved to be difficult toimplement in the... |

As part of the European project REPCO on the search for alternatives to copper, products have been tested in arboriculture and organic viticulture in order to control the scab of the apple tree Venturia inaequalis and the mildew of the vine Plasmopara viticola. Natural defense stimulators, biological fungicides and biological control agents were selected and evaluated in the laboratory and in the field by the various partner organizations of the project. The Avignon GRAB was particularly involved in field trials to evaluate the efficacy of these alternative products on vine blight. These four years of study highlight the interest of some alternative products to copper. The elicitors, antagonists, biostimulants and biological fungicides are an interesting... |

The apple pathogen Marssonina coronaria (teleomorph: Diplocarpon mali) has recently become a significant problem in Central European organic apple production, causing dark spots on both the leaves and fruit, and early leaf fall. Field observations and resistance testing under controlled conditions indicate that there are differences in resistance to M.coronaria between cultivars. We screened 39 apple cultivars, selected from a large collection of genetic resources, for their susceptibility or resistance to M.coronaria. 1 year old saplings were artificially inoculated under semi-controlled conditions. The development of disease symptoms was observed and assessed several times over more than two months. Symptoms varied largely between cultivars, from... |

The organic market has grown exponentially in Europe during the last ten years. However, the organic fruit industry has shown the lowest growth rates (1-5% market share) compared to other commodities. One major reason is the high production risk due to high disease and pest pressure in humid climates. Key pests and diseases in apple and pear include scab, sooty blotch, and fire blight as well as rosy apple aphid, pear sucker, and codling moth. In cherry, damages due to brown rot (Monilinia) and the cherry fruit fly make organic production almost unfeasible. In an ideal organic system, all possible measures that lead to improved stability of the system must be implemented. In fruit production, such measures include (i) use of resistant varieties (scab),... |
