Land Use Change: A Spatial Multinomial Choice Analysis AgEcon
Carrion-Flores, Carmen E.; Flores-Lagunes, Alfonso; Guci, Ledia.
Urban decentralization and dispersion trends have led to increased conversion of rural lands in many urban peripheries and exurban regions of the U.S. The growth of the exurban areas has outpaced growth in urban and suburban areas, resulting in growth pressures at the urban-rural fringe. A thorough analysis of land use change patterns and the ability to predict these changes are necessary for the effective design of regional environmental, growth, and development policies. We estimate a multinomial discrete choice model with spatial dependence using parcel-level data from Medina County, Ohio. Accounting for spatial dependence should result in improved statistical inference about land use changes. Our spatial model extends the binary choice “linearized...

Automatic generation of documents AgEcon
Gini, Rosa; Pasquini, Jacopo.
This paper describes a natural interaction between Stata and markup languages. Stata’s programming and analysis features, together with the flexibility in output formatting of the markup languages, allow generation and/or update of whole documents (e.g., reports, presentations on screen or web). We give examples for both LaTeX and HTML.

Proportionality of Willingness to Pay to Small Risk Changes – The Impact of Attitudinal Factors in Scope Tests AgEcon
Leiter, Andrea M.; Pruckner, Gerald J..
Sensitivity (proportionality) of willingness to pay to (small) risk changes is often used as a criterion to test for valid measures of economic preferences. In a contingent valuation (CV) study conducted in Austria in February 2005 1,005 respondents were asked their willingness to pay (WTP) for preventing an increase in risk by 1/42,500 and 3/42,500, respectively. WTP for the higher risk variation is significantly higher than WTP for the lower risk change. We find evidence that those respondents who have personal experience with avalanches combine the information about future risk increase, provided in the survey, with the observed number of mortal avalanche accidents in the past. The proportionality of WTP holds if such prior experiences are taken into...

Evaluation on Woodland Intensive Use - A Case of Wenhe Operating Zone in Yakeshi City of China AgEcon
Zhang, Xia; Zhao, Deyi; Li, Guoqiang.
Based on apprehending the conception of intensive use of woodland, 12 indices are selected from the aspects of economy, society, ecology and so on according to the principles of scientific systematization, collectible index and system inner linkage. A scientific evaluation index system for woodland intensive use is constructed. Range Standardization Method is adopted in order to eliminate the differences among indices; index weight is calculated by the objective variation coefficient weight method. Physio geographic condition, woodland area and forest resource of Wenhe Operating Zone in Yakeshi City, China are introduced. According to the 2004-2008 relevant statistical data, intensive use level of Wenhe Operating Zone is evaluated. Result shows that the...

Constructing Farm Level Yield Densities from Aggregated Data: Analysis and Comparison of Approaches AgEcon
Cooper, Joseph C.; Langemeier, Michael R.; Schnitkey, Gary D.; Zulauf, Carl R..
Yield variability can be significantly higher at the farm level than at more aggregated levels, including the county. However, due to a dearth of available farm level data, much stochastic analysis involving farm yields utilizes more aggregated yield data as a proxy for the farm level. We empirically evaluate farm-level variability using longitudinal farm level data sets available from the Kansas Farm Management Association and the Illinois Farm Business and Farm Management Association. For corn, soybeans, and wheat, we compare the farm level yield variability obtained from this data to that inferred from Federal crop insurance premiums. The farm management data exhibit lower yield variability than are implied by the crop insurance premiums.

Speaking Stata: Rowwise AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
Stata’s main data model treats observations in rows and variables in columns quite differently, but rowwise problems also arise that require working against the grain. This column shows how to exploit existing functions and egen functions when they exist and apply to such problems. It offers advice on how to build your own loops, egen functions, or programs when needed. Mata provides especially convenient tools for constructing many such functions and programs, centered on putting selected data into matrices and then processing each observation as a separate vector. Two programs, rowsort and rowranks, are formally published with this column.

Implementing double-robust estimators of causal effects AgEcon
Emsley, Richard; Lunt, Mark; Pickles, Andrew; Dunn, Graham.
This article describes the implementation of a double-robust estimator for pretest–posttest studies (Lunceford and Davidian, 2004, Statistics in Medicine 23: 2937–2960) and presents a new Stata command (dr) that carries out the procedure. A double-robust estimator gives the analyst two opportunities for obtaining unbiased inference when adjusting for selection effects such as confounding by allowing for different forms of model misspecification; a double-robust estimator also can offer increased efficiency when all the models are correctly specified. We demonstrate the results with a Monte Carlo simulation study, and we show how to implement the double-robust estimator on a single simulated dataset, both manually and by using the dr command.

The Stata command felsdvreg to fit a linear model with two high–dimensional fixed effects AgEcon
Cornelissen, Thomas.
This article proposes a memory-saving decomposition of the design matrix to facilitate the estimation of a linear model with two high-dimensional fixed effects. A common way to fit such a model is to take into account one of the effects by including dummy variables and to sweep out the other effect by the within transformation (fixed-effects transformation). If the number of panel units is high, creating and storing the dummy variables can involve prohibitively large computer-memory requirements. The memory-saving procedure to set up the moment matrices for estimation presented in this article can reduce the memory requirements considerably. The companion Stata ado-file felsdvreg implements the estimation method, takes care of identification issues, and...

A PARTIAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL OF THE LINKAGES BETWEEN ANIMAL WELFARE, TRADE AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN SCOTLAND AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; Ashworth, Cheryl J.; Stott, Alistair W..
This research analyses the impacts of a scientific advance that improves animal welfare, upon the environment and trade in Scotland using partial equilibrium (PE) modelling. The science improves pig neonatal survival through improved (high fibre) sow diets used before mating. Our model simulates the effects of animal welfare changes on the pig production systems (pig meat) and further on trade flows (trade in pig meat) and environment (water and air pollution). We consider two animal welfare simulation scenarios, namely the status quo – no animal welfare change as regards pig neonatal mortality (baseline scenario) and the case of improving pig neonatal survival (alternative scenario) and compare the impacts on trade and environment between the two...

AN ASSESSMENT OF WORKAROUNDS FOR SPATIAL EFFECTS IN THE CASE OF BINARY PROBIT AgEcon
Robertson, Richard D.; Nelson, Gerald C..
The consequences of spatial effects on discrete choice models have not been well established. Various ad hoc workarounds have been proposed to mitigate potential estimation problems. This paper employs Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the severity of the problems introduced by spatial effects and the effectiveness of the workarounds.

Technology Adoption by Heterogeneous Producers to Regulate a Stock Externality AgEcon
Xabadia, Angels; Goetz, Renan-Ulrich; Zilberman, David.
This paper presents a framework to determine optimal resource allocation over time for the production of a good by heterogeneous producers who generate a stock externality. We analyze the optimal intertemporal and quality-specific combination of abatement strategies at the source given by a change in the intensity of production and in the chosen technology, and/or removal of existing pollution stock. The results show how the specifications of the production and the emission functions affect technology adoption and the design of the optimal intertemporal combination of source and stock abatement strategies. Moreover, the paper shows that regulation at the intensive margin cannot be considered as a substitute for a regulation at the extensive margin. The...

Responsibility and Sustainability in a Food Chain: A Priority Matrix Analysis AgEcon
Caracciolo, Francesco; Gorgitano, Maria Teresa; Lombardi, Pasquale; Sanino, Giuliana; Verneau, Fabio.
This paper shows the results of empirical research conducted to assess the sustainability of a typical food supply chain, suggesting feasible solutions to satisfy inter-dimensional requisites of durable development. The analysis was conducted with reference to the supply chain of the San Marzano tomato (SMZ), a typical local food. The product is endowed with an origin certification label (PDO), meeting demand within high-value market niches. The SMZ is a flagship product in the Italian region of Campania and has benefited from several regionally funded interventions, such as genetic research and support for the application for EU certification of origin). Two key findings emerged from the research. First, the results allowed us to define a Stakeholder...

ON SUPPLY SIDE OPTION VALUE AgEcon
Graham-Tomasi, Theodore; Myers, Robert J..
In this paper the ability to sign supply-side option value is studied. The compensating and equivalent option prices are defined, and it is argued that equivalent option price is the preferred welfare measure. In the absence of income risk, if the probability distribution of supply is degenerate either with or without the project, one-way test of project acceptance can be established.
