Trust and knowledge are two concepts that are considered important for understanding consumers’ engagement with organic products, but the concepts are often used at random. This article explores the configuration and generation of consumer trust in organics and investigates the relationship between knowledge and trust. The article is based on a multi-method study of Danish consumers’ perceptions of organics that included a consumer survey, a focus group, and individual interviews. The inquiry documents that Danish consumers’ display a high degree of trust in organics, and have overly positive expectations regarding organics, but know little about the difference between organic and non-organic products. Many respondents express no interest in acquiring... |

The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming (DARCOF) is a "centre without walls", which is to say that the researchers remain in their own research environment but collaborate across institutes. The overall remit is to coordinate Danish R&D for organic farming, with a view to achieving optimum benefit from the allocated resources. The specific objectives of the SYNERGY project are to secure the continued interdisciplinary development of Danish research in organic farming and to explore the many possibilities of synergy in DARCOF II. In relation to these objectives, the assignments of SYNERGY are to: • Co-ordinate, evaluate and manage DARCOF II as a whole • Analyse, discuss and synthesis knowledge across research projects and disciplines •... |

In a joint experiment between Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden the dormancy of vegetative reproduction in Cirsium arvense, Sonchus arvensis and Elymus repens was studied during the latter part of the vegetation period. The aim of the study was to achieve a more efficient control of these weed species by knowing their reproduction behaviour in the autumn. |

In order to develop a method of measuring the level of microbial activity in soil that is suitable for use by farmers, land managers, and other non-scientists, a simple method for determining soil microbial activity was evaluated and compared with two standard techniques. Soils sampled from vegetable farms in south east Queensland were incubated in the laboratory under controlled moisture and temperature conditions. Three methods were used to measure soil microbial activity, a respirometry method and two methods using the cotton strip assay (CSA) technique (image analysis and tensometer). The standard CSA method measured loss of tensile strength over a 35 day incubation period of buried cotton strips using a tensometer. The new CSA technique measured the... |

The social problem of food insecurity and the challenge for farmers in adapting successfully to climate change in West African societies build the framework and scope of our research for development (R4D). It is addressed through a project called Syprobio, operating in Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin. Elected farmers, representing 2000–3000 organic farmers, are conducting on-farm research and cooperating with 40–50 researchers and technicians in testing 27 innovative practices by forming innovation platforms. Soil fertility, seed improvement, pest management, agronomy and socio-economics are the main themes. The innovations being tested are meant to improve food security and climate change adaptation. The main R4D methods used are transdisciplinarity,... |

From a rural, sociological point of view no really satisfying social theories suggested have been able to grasp the complexity and special character of a farm entity. The contention of this paper is that a combination of Luhmann’s theory of social systems and the Actor-network Theory of Latour, Callon, and Law offers a fruitful binocular perspective of a farm as a framework for understanding a farm as a self-organizing entity and for studying the social, economic, technical, and biological aspects. The two approaches build on two different ontologies and cannot readily be merged into one theory. Luhmann’s theory offers an approach to understand a farm as a self-organizing system (operating in meaning) that has to produce and reproduce itself through... |

Ocean Dumping A German research vessel, the Polarstern, is on a 70 day exercise of dumping 20 tonnes of ferrous sulphate (iron sulphate, FeSO4) in the Southern Ocean at a latitude of 46° south. The LOHAFEX experiment of the Alfred Wegner Institute for Polar & Marine Research project will increase the iron level of the treated ocean area by a factor of up to 24 times “the natural iron concentration”. The target area is 20 kilometres in diameter, i.e. approximately 320 square kilometres. It could be argued that the Southern Ocean being far away from sources of pollution,as well as international media, is an ideal place to conduct such a geo-engineering experiment, and that maybe this ocean fertilization experiment will be the seed for a whole new... |
