A critique of methodologies for the comparison of organic and conventional farming systems Organic Eprints
Lee, Howard; Fowler, Susan.
This paper was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR). A review is presented of comparative studies of organic and conventional farming systems, with a special focus upon economic criteria. The different categories of comparison methodologies are critically reviewed. Conclusions are that classic experimentation has a valuable part to play but that more qualitative assessment can also be useful and should be encouraged. Careful allowance should be made for major background differences in management when comparing financial profitability. Longer term case studies, which try to monitor organic systems in their own right, should also be encouraged.

Zwischen den Zeilen - was Biobauern und Biobäuerinnen bewegt Organic Eprints
Busch, Claudia.

Horse bean, pea and rape protein and flax seed oil in feed for organic trout Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
Organic horse bean, pea and rape may partly replace the fish meal protein, and flax seed oil may replace the fish oil in feed for organic rainbow trout. These are the most recent results from the ORAQUA project. Fish meal and fish oil are unique sources to protein and oil in fish feed due to the optimum content of amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids. However, as these resources are globally very limited, the ORAQUA project is focusing alternative organic plant crops in the feed for organic trout.

Trust and knowledge in organic consumption Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Povlsen, Karen Klitgaard; Christensen, Tove.
Trust and knowledge are two concepts that are considered important for understanding consumers’ engagement with organic products, but the concepts are often used at random. This article explores the configuration and generation of consumer trust in organics and investigates the relationship between knowledge and trust. The article is based on a multi-method study of Danish consumers’ perceptions of organics that included a consumer survey, a focus group, and individual interviews. The inquiry documents that Danish consumers’ display a high degree of trust in organics, and have overly positive expectations regarding organics, but know little about the difference between organic and non-organic products. Many respondents express no interest in acquiring...

Comparison of methods for measuring soil microbial activity using cotton strips and a respirometer Organic Eprints
Nachimuthu, G.; King, K.; Kristiansen, P.; Lockwood, P.; Guppy, C..
In order to develop a method of measuring the level of microbial activity in soil that is suitable for use by farmers, land managers, and other non-scientists, a simple method for determining soil microbial activity was evaluated and compared with two standard techniques. Soils sampled from vegetable farms in south east Queensland were incubated in the laboratory under controlled moisture and temperature conditions. Three methods were used to measure soil microbial activity, a respirometry method and two methods using the cotton strip assay (CSA) technique (image analysis and tensometer). The standard CSA method measured loss of tensile strength over a 35 day incubation period of buried cotton strips using a tensometer. The new CSA technique measured the...

SYPROBIO: Driving farmer-led innovation platforms to address food security, poverty alleviation and resilience to climate change in West African cotton communities Organic Eprints
Gian, Nicolay; Dabire, Rémy; Fliessbach, Andreas; Glin, Laurent; Sissoko, Fagaye.
The social problem of food insecurity and the challenge for farmers in adapting successfully to climate change in West African societies build the framework and scope of our research for development (R4D). It is addressed through a project called Syprobio, operating in Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin. Elected farmers, representing 2000–3000 organic farmers, are conducting on-farm research and cooperating with 40–50 researchers and technicians in testing 27 innovative practices by forming innovation platforms. Soil fertility, seed improvement, pest management, agronomy and socio-economics are the main themes. The innovations being tested are meant to improve food security and climate change adaptation. The main R4D methods used are transdisciplinarity,...

Interplay between daily rhythmic serum-mediated bacterial killing activity and immune defence factors in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Organic Eprints
Lazado, Carlo C.; Gesto, Manuel; Madsen, Lone; Jokumsen, Alfred.
Circadian rhythm is emerging as an important regulator of immune functions. However, there is a paucity of information on the influence of this biological phenomenon in the antimicrobial factors in teleost fish. This study investigated the dynamics and interplay of serum-mediated bacterial killing activity and immune defence factors throughout the light:dark (LD) cycle in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The juvenile fish came from two different emergence time fractions (i.e., late and early) that were believed to exhibit behavioural and physiological differences. Serum collected during the day from fish (mean ± SD: 39.8 ± 6.3 g) reared under 14L:10D photoperiod demonstrated bactericidal activity against Flavobacterium psychrophilum, Yersinia ruckeri...

Helhedsorienteret forskning i økologi Organic Eprints

Luhmann and Actor-Network Theory combined: Farm enterprises as self-organizing systems Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
From a rural, sociological point of view no really satisfying social theories suggested have been able to grasp the complexity and special character of a farm entity. The contention of this paper is that a combination of Luhmann’s theory of social systems and the Actor-network Theory of Latour, Callon, and Law offers a fruitful binocular perspective of a farm as a framework for understanding a farm as a self-organizing entity and for studying the social, economic, technical, and biological aspects. The two approaches build on two different ontologies and cannot readily be merged into one theory. Luhmann’s theory offers an approach to understand a farm as a self-organizing system (operating in meaning) that has to produce and reproduce itself through...

Geo-Engineering in the Southern Ocean Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Ocean Dumping A German research vessel, the Polarstern, is on a 70 day exercise of dumping 20 tonnes of ferrous sulphate (iron sulphate, FeSO4) in the Southern Ocean at a latitude of 46° south. The LOHAFEX experiment of the Alfred Wegner Institute for Polar & Marine Research project will increase the iron level of the treated ocean area by a factor of up to 24 times “the natural iron concentration”. The target area is 20 kilometres in diameter, i.e. approximately 320 square kilometres. It could be argued that the Southern Ocean being far away from sources of pollution,as well as international media, is an ideal place to conduct such a geo-engineering experiment, and that maybe this ocean fertilization experiment will be the seed for a whole new...
