Response of cucurbit species to Rotylenchulus reniformis Trop. Plant Pathol.
Torres,Gustavo R. C.; Pedrosa,Elvira M. R.; Siqueira,Kércya M. S.; Moura,Romero M..
The state of Rio Grande do Norte is the major melon (Cucumis melo) producer in Brazil and the reniform nematode Rotylenchulus reniformis has become increasingly important due to damages to that crop and the lack of resistant cultivars and effective control measures. Under these circumstances, eight cucurbit genotypes were screened for resistance or tolerance to a population of R. reniformis in naturally infested field soil, under greenhouse conditions. A high reduction in shoot mass was found in all infected genotypes. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) cv. Sugar Baby showed the lowest rate of nematode reproduction.

Natural variability in Arabidopsis thaliana germplasm response to Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris Trop. Plant Pathol.
Carmo,Lílian S.T.; Cândido,Elizabete S.; Campos,Pollyanna F.; Quezado-Duval,Alice Maria; Leonardecz,Eduardo; Lopes,Carlos A.; Quirino,Betania F..
This work aimed to study the interaction between the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), the pathogen responsible for black rot of crucifers. The response of 32 accessions of A. thaliana to the Brazilian isolate of Xcc CNPH 17 was evaluated. No immunity-like response was observed. "CS1308", "CS1566" and "CS1643" grown in continuous light were among the accessions that showed strongest resistance when inoculated with 5 x 10(6) CFU/mL. In contrast, "CS1194" and "CS1492" were among the most susceptible accessions. Similar results were obtained when plants were grown under short-day conditions. To quantify the differences in disease symptoms, total chlorophyll was extracted from contrasting accessions at different...

Virulence pattern of Pyricularia grisea isolates from farmers' fields on newly released upland rice cultivars Trop. Plant Pathol.
Araújo,Leila G.; Prabhu,Anne S.; Silva,Gisele B. da.
The virulence pattern of the isolates of Pyricularia grisea from commercial fields of the upland rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars 'Primavera' and 'BRS Bonança' was analyzed. A hundred and seventy monoconidial isolates of the pathogen virulent to 'Primavera' and 139 to 'BRS Bonança' collected from eight fields, during two years (2001-2003) were tested, under greenhouse conditions, on six newly released rice cultivars. Differences in virulence pattern were observed in pathogenic populations of 'Primavera' and 'BRS Bonança'. Isolates with virulence to improved cultivars were common in samples from farmers' fields in the absence of aloinfection. The virulence frequency of P. grisea isolates collected from 'Primavera'' to cultivars 'BRS Vencedora', 'BRS Colosso',...

Identification of sources of resistance in sorghum to Peronosclerospora sorghi Trop. Plant Pathol.
Barbosa,Flavia C. R; Casela,Carlos R; Pfenning,Ludwig H; Santos,Fredolino G.
The main objective of this work was to identify sources of resistance in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) to Peronosclerospora sorghi, the causal agent of downy mildew, through the evaluation of 42 sorghum genotypes under natural infection in the field. Genotypes were planted in single row plots between two rows of the susceptible line SC283, planted 30 days before, to act as spreader rows, in two separate nurseries. The experimental design was a completely randomized block design with three replications. Sorghum genotypes CMSXS156, CMSXS157, CMSXS243, TxARG-1, 8902, 9902054, 9910032, 9910296, Tx430, QL-3, SC170-6-17, CMSXS762 and BR304 were classified as highly resistant in both nurseries. Among these, SC170-6-17 and 9910296 showed 0% systemic infection. Results...

In vitro toxin production by Fusarium solani f. sp. piperis Trop. Plant Pathol.
Duarte,Maria de Lourdes R.; Archer,Simon A..
Fusarium solani f. sp. piperis (teleomorph: Nectria haematococca f. sp. piperis), causal agent of root rot and stem blight on black pepper (Piper nigrum), produces secondary metabolites with toxigenic properties, capable of inducing vein discoloration in detached leaves and wilting in transpiring microcuttings. Production of F. solani f. sp. piperis (Fsp) toxic metabolites reached a peak after 25 days of static incubation on potato sucrose broth at 25 ºC under illumination. Changes in the pH of the culture filtrate did not alter the effect of toxic metabolites. However, when the pH was changed before the medium had been autoclaved, a more intense biological response was observed, with an optimum at pH 6.0. Isolates that produced red pigments in liquid...

Design a biomimetic disc using geometric features of the claws CIGR Journal
Dehghan Hesar, Hadi; Kalantari, Davood.
This study presents a numerical investigation regarding the stress distribution on the new designed disc harrow using the ANSYS software. A conventional disc, notched disc, and a biomimetic design inspired by the claw of the leatherwing were analyzed in two conventional plowed and unplowed soils and three tillage depths (4, 7 and 10 cm). Stress analysis for all treatments showed that the highest stress was imposed at the disc-stem junction. Meanwhile the highest deformation occurred at the lowest and the most external part of the discs (land line). The results obtained in this study indicated that the maximum stress exerted from tilling soil to discs increases linearly with tillage depth in both plowed and unplowed soils. Given these results, the maximum...

Susceptibility of new potato varieties to the potato late blight oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary in Lithuania Agrociencia
Asakaviciute,Rita; Razukas,Almantas; Jundulas,Juozas.
Potato late blight can completely eliminate this crop in developing countries. Therefore, the objetive of this research was to determine the susceptibility of several Lithuanian potato cultivars to late blight. The experimental design was a randomized split-plot, data were subjected to the ANOVA and the Tukey test was used to verify the significance of differences (p<0.05). Late blight infection in potato groups of various growing cycles lenght was different. The intensity of potato blight spread in various earliness potato cultivars depends not only on their earliness, but also on their biological-mathematical models of late blight prognosis.

Antifungal susceptibility of yeasts isolated from anthropogenic watershed Anais da ABC (AABC)
MILANEZI,ANA C.M.; WITUSK,JOÃO P.D.; VAN DER SAND,SUELI T..
Abstract Yeasts are unicellular fungi widespread in the environment, and studies suggest that there is a positive correlation between yeast and polluted aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to analyze the diversity and resistance of yeasts isolated from water samples collected along the Arroio Dilúvio in Porto Alegre to antifungals. Yeast isolates from the Arroio Dilúvio were subjected to susceptibility assays against antifungals using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test, and amplification of the ITS1-5.8S-IT2 region; in addition, the ITS-5.8S region was sequenced for some of the isolates. The amplification product was subjected to PCR-RFLP, and the restriction profile allowed the construction of a dendrogram. Susceptibility tests...

2,3,8-Trisubstituted Quinolines with Antimalarial Activity Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARTINEZ,PABLO D.G.; KRAKE,SUSANN H.; POGGI,MAITIA L.; CAMPBELL,SIMON F.; WILLIS,PAUL A.; DIAS,LUIZ C..
ABSTRACT Combination therapy drugs are considered a fundamental way to control malaria as it mimimizes the risk of emergence of resistance to the individual partner drugs. Consequently, this type of therapy constitutes a driving force for the discovery of new drugs with different modes of action, since this will provide options for combining different drugs to achieve the optimum antimalarial treatment. In this context, a 2,3,8-trisubstitued quinoline compound was found in a high throughput screen (HTS) to show an excellent inhibition of P. falciparum NF54 (IC50 = 22 nM) and low cytotoxicity. We performed a detailed evaluation of the substituents to improve the metabolic stability and solubility liabilities of the original hit and identified derivatives...

The seed coat of Phaseolus vulgaris interferes with the development of the cowpea weevil [Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)] Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Luciana B.; Sales,Maurício P.; Oliveira,Antônia E. A.; Machado,Olga L. T.; Fernandes,Kátia V. S.; Xavier-Filho,José.
We have confirmed here that the seeds of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) do not support development of the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), a pest of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] seeds. Analysis of the testa (seed coat) of the bean suggested that neither thickness nor the levels of compounds such as tannic acid, tannins, or HCN are important for the resistance. On the other hand, we have found that phaseolin (vicilin-like 7S storage globulin), detected in the testa by Western blotting and N-terminal amino acid sequencing, is detrimental to the development of C. maculatus. As for the case of other previously studied legume seeds (Canavalia ensiformis and Phaseolus lunatus) we suggest that the presence of vicilin-like proteins in the...
