| As an ancient guild dating from the Middle Ages, fishing boat captains have maintained their association in coastal ports on the Mediterranean Sea with partially modified statutes. A historical study of three associations, identified by the types of fishery practiced, reveals the basic principles of auto-regulation in fishing efforts This type of association supervises a population of fishers so that each person can live off his fishing activities within the jurisdiction of the guild with his own material and equipment and according to market conditions. | The development of king scallop (Pecten maximus) culture in France has been subsidised by the State and the Brittany Region for the past 10 years. Technical progress has been made and the public authorities now wish to know if this activity is economically feasible. While continuing research to improve the performance of this type of shellfish culture (culture techniques and physiology), Ifremer (public institute for oceanological research) also undertook an economic assessment on costs, marketability and legal and social limitations. Net investment is an effort capacity increase, so investment policy plays a major role in the fisheries management policy.
