Alternating grazing to control parasites in young cattle (Video) 21
Alföldi, Thomas.
Within the CORE Organic project MIX-ENABLE, Steffen Werne (FiBL) and his team are testing more sustainable ways of controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants. Farmers usually control parasites by using dewormers. However, resistance against these products is increasing. One approach is mixed grazing of different livestock species. It is well known that sheep and goats can benefit from mixed grazing with cattle in terms of animal health and performance. This is because gastrointestinal parasites are usually specialized in one livestock species, and mixed grazing has thus a “diluting” effect. Conversely, little is known whether young cattle can also benefit from mixed grazing with sheep. This is what Steffen Werne and his teams want to find out...

The use of feed blocks as supplementation for the upland hill flock: (2) Cost effective lamb production 21
McLean, Barbara M L; Frost, David; Evans, D Eifion.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference of the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR).Under EU organic livestock regulations introduced in 2000, new restrictions were placed on the use of bought-in feedstuffs in hill systems. These reduced the non-organic annual percentage previously allowed in LFAs from 20% to 10% of annual dry matter intake. A further stepping down of these allowances may be introduced ahead of a complete ban in 2005. Bought-in feed supplements must therefore, be used strategically and offer “best value for money” in terms of ewe performance and lamb growth. The economic cost of supplementing the diet of twin-rearing ewes post lambing with either an approved non-organic feed block + half ration of commercial...

Feed more on-farm protein. A European strategy in organic agriculture to improve on-farm protein management 21
Obrist, Robert; Klaiss, Matthias; Edler, Veronika; Beeckman, Annelies; Tuominen, Pirkko; Bertelsen, Inger; Clavin, Dan; Leavy, Elaine; Sobry, Luk; Govaerts, Wim; Andresen, Niels.
The Lifelong Learning Program (Leonardo, action type: mobility) funded our project “European Agricultural Training – renewing skills for experienced organic advisors” (see www.ch-go-est.eu), 2013-2015. The goal of this European partnership project was to facilitate networking and exchange of ideas, experiences, and methods between experienced organic multiplicators (advisors, teachers in agricultural training, researchers etc.). The group had members from several northern and mid-European countries and the focus was on-farm protein management from cultivation to feeding. Field visits to leading organic farms organized by participating organisations, discussion and resulting ideas gave new inputs to the work of the advisors in their own countries and...

Refined forage legumes as local sources of protein feed for monogastrics and high quality fibre feed for ruminants in organic production 21
Protein supplementation is a challenge in organic livestock production. Use of imported protein feeds on organically managed farms limits the recycling of nutrients. Fractionation of forage legumes, through novel harvesting and biorefining techniques, into protein- and fibre-rich feeds for monogastrics and ruminants, respectively, can increase farm self-sufficiency with feed. Economic, environmental and social sustainability needs to be taken into account when developing concepts for localised food systems. Mathematical models will be developed for protein yields of lucerne and red clover. Leaf stripping and juice production will be studied in experiments located in different regions in Europe and Turkey and assessed for feed value in monogastrics and...

Opportunities and Barriers for Niche Marketing of Lamb in European LFAs based on Consumer Attitudes to Product Quality 21
Rahmann, Gerold; Ashworth, Stuart; Boutonnet, Jean-Paul; Brunori, Gianluca; Papadopoulus, Ilias.
With commodity prices continuing to decrease and with policy constraint that farmers cannot easily increase their incomes by increasing volumes of production, they must find alternative ways to maintain their standard of living. This can be achieved by either niche marketing of agricultural products or by environmental payments, which are either paid by the government or the consumer. The results of a consumer survey carried out in Less Favoured Areas in Scotland, Germany, Greece, France and Italy to assess consumer attitudes of what constitutes the quality of lamb and the extent to which this provides an opportunity to exploit niche marketing, are discussed. Consumers generally have much less interest in the use of regional labelling,...

Mögliche Effekte von Effektiven Mikroorganismen auf Haemonchus contortus-Larven in vitro 21
Podstatzky, Leopold; Gotthalmseder, Eva.

Geiten: Klim- en schuurmogelijkheden in de wei en in de stal 21
Verwer, C.

Tanniferous forage plants: Agronomic performance, palatability and efficacy against parasitic nematodes in sheep 21
Häring, D.A.; Scharenberg, A.; Heckendorn, F.; Dohme, F.; Lüscher, A.; Maurer, V.; Suter, D.; Hertzberg, H..
Tanniferous forage plants can have beneficial effects on ruminant productivity and health (improved protein supply, bloat safety and antiparasitic properties). However, condensed tannins can also lower palatability, voluntary feed intake and digestibility. The aim of our interdisciplinary project was to generate basic knowledge on plant management, feed palatability and the antiparasitic properties of tanniferous forage plants for their practical application in agronomy, focusing on their usefulness in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in organic farming. We found that Onobrychis viciifolia (sainfoin), Lotus corniculatus (birdsfoot trefoil) and Cichorium intybus (chicory) were suitable for cultivation under the given temperate climatic conditions,...

Finishing store lambs from organic hill and upland farms OF0119 21
Elliot, Mr J; Keatinge, Mr R; Powell, Mr L; Unwin, Mr R.
1. The aim of this study was to assess the economics and constraints associated with home finishing lambs on a range of organic hill and upland farms in England and Wales, and to evaluate the potential for further finishing on registered farms in the lowlands. 2. The current state of the organic sheep sector is briefly reviewed. This identifies problems of scale, limited premia and uneveness of supply as limiting factors to more rapid development of the market and associated production systems. 3. To quanitfy the effect of organic management on financial performance, hill and upland farms were classified under four typical systems, depending on the degree of intensification. 4. Without a sizeable area of improved ground, to which fertiliser...

Status Quo and barriers of the expansion of organic sheep husbandry in Germany 21
Klumpp, Carolin; Häring, Anna Maria.
Conclusions Potential development of sheep husbandry in organic farming in Germany was identified as follows: - Optimisation of existing sheep husbandry in organic farming: The main problems resulting from Council Regulation (EC) No. 2092/91 are appropriate feeding and lamb breeding strategies and health management. To address these weaknesses further research activities are necessary. - Conversion of conventional sheep farms to organic production methods will only become an interesting option when the problems identified are addressed. Only then support measures will actually become an incentive to convert. - Introduction of sheep husbandry in existing organic farms: Sheep husbandry can easily be introduced in existing organic farms due to the...

Moderhinke-Empfindlichkeit und Therapie bei unterschiedlichen Fleischschafrassen 21
Rahmann, Gerold.
