Lupo, Coralie; Fleury, Elodie; Normand, Julien; Osta Amigo, Axel; Robert, Stephane; Canier, Lydie; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine.

A new device for in situ video and fluorescence analysis of marine particles. Applications to phytoplankton studies. ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Lehaitre, Michel; Nascimben, Eric; Rouvillain, Julien; Berric, Roger; Le Gall, Erwan; Gentien, Patrick.
A new video-microscope has been developed for in situ investigation on marine particles. A field of view is produced by a laser beam at 473 nm. Individual cells or particles that entered this field of view appear as individual diffraction-limited spots of light, which are resolved from the dark background. A mobile high-pass optical filter (610 nm) can be controlled and displaced in front of the CCD camera, allowing simultaneously imaging and discrimination between fluorescing and non-fluorescing particles. We have the possibility to add a band pass filter for phycoerytrin detection. The system allows white light visualisation of particles ranging from 10 µm to several millimetres, depending on the zoom magnification. With the 610 nm high pass filter, the...

Bridging the gap between BSE risk assessment and consumer perception of the surveillance system in Japan OAK
KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; HILL, Glen; SAWADA, Manabu; YOSHIDA, Seiko; 門平, 睦代; ヒル, グレン; 澤田, 学; 吉田, 省子.
Since the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was encountered in Japan in 2001, the country quickly responded with a change from passive to active surveillance. The response has not been a smooth one, though, and news media have contributed to opening the public’s eyes to inadequate behavior from government sources responsible for monitoring and protecting the health of consumers. The resultant information“gap” has served to augment the typical Japanese perceptions of risk assessment, as assessed in surveys from 2003 to 2005. Such false beliefs have caused consumers to call for 100% testing of animals for BSE despite accepted scientific standards which do not support such comprehensive and costly surveillance. Instead, testing agencies...

Area-Wide Management of Fruit-Flies: What are the Costs and the Benefits? AgEcon
Florec, Veronique; Sadler, Rohan; White, Benedict.
Increasing volumes and speed of agricultural trade and the opening of new markets for agricultural products create greater challenges to systems established to protect countries from invasive organisms that can be harmful to human and animal health, crops and natural environments. In reaction to the threat of exotic pests and diseases, the World Trade Organization recognises the right of country members to protect themselves from the risks posed by exotic pests and diseases through the application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures. One possible response from exporting countries facing SPS trade barriers is to obtain pest-free area (PFA) certification. While large benefits can potentially be achieved from greater access to world markets through...

NATIONAL IMPACTS OF CHANGES IN LIVESTOCK DISEASE SURVEILLANCE AgEcon
Hillberg Seitzinger, Ann; Paarlberg, Philip L.; Mathews, Kenneth H., Jr..
This research estimates the U.S. economic welfare effects of livestock disease surveillance. One type of surveillance considers livestock diseases already in the United States. Annual national economic welfare increases $1.4 billion on average compared with a Federal surveillance budget for endemic diseases of $300 million annually. Other surveillance deals with reducing the risk of foreign animal diseases entering and becoming established. The estimated annual gain to producers from surveillance for foreign animal diseases is $401 million dollars. Consumers experience additional benefits of $170 million annually. Total annual benefits are $571 million versus a foreign animal disease surveillance budget of $165 million.

SURVEILLANCE FOR NEWCASTLE DISEASE VIRUS, AVIAN INFLUENZA VIRUS AND MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM IN WILD BIRDS NEAR COMMERCIAL POULTRY FARMS SURROUNDED BY ATLANTIC RAINFOREST REMNANTS, SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Guimarães,MB; Hurtado,R; Bello,CP; Vanstreels,RET; Ferreira,AJP.
ABSTRACT The geographic overlap between areas of Atlantic rainforest and human activities allows interactions to occur between humans and wild and domestic animals. Despite the great importance of the domestic animal-wildlife-human interface that occurs at poultry farms in terms of public health, economic production and wildlife conservation, there are few studies in Brazil examining the distribution and health of wild birds that interact with poultry farms. From January to December 2010, mist nets were used to capture 166 free-ranging birds that were within close proximity to three poultry farms in Atlantic rainforest remnants in south-eastern Brazil. The species composition was examined, and molecular methods were used to test for avian influenza virus,...

Sanitary policy for the prevention and surveillance of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Brazil MV&Z
Vaz, Juliana do Amaral Moreira Conforti; Sena, Elaine Fátima de.
The Programa Nacional de Prevenção e Vigilância da Encefalopatia Espongiforme Bovina (PNEEB) was established by the Brazilian Normative Instruction nº 44, on September 17th, 2013. Previously, the health policy was part of the Programa Nacional de Controle da Raiva dos Herbívoros. Since 1990, BSE preventive actions have been established and constantly improved. The main objectives of this program are: to prevent the entrance of BSE agent into the national territory; to apply risk mitigation measures to avoid possible recycling and diffusion of the BSE agent in the country and maintain a surveillance system for the detection of infected animals. The preventive health measures are in line with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) recommendations,...

Epidemiological surveillance, an essential tool for animal health and public health MV&Z
Côrtes, José de Angelis.
Characterized as a regular activity, the purpose of epidemiological surveillance is to obtain knowledge about health conditions and disease occurrence, providing support for control and / or erradication programs. Because of its comprehensive, dynamic and permanent nature, this activity has been qualified as a key function of national animal and human health systems. Epidemiological survey is its main tool and the means to obtain data includes passive and active surveillance, disease surveillance and monitoring, a more specific activity that has the objective of obtaining additional knowledge about aspects of an epidemiological pattern or performance of health-related operations.

Ongoing quiescence in the Borborema Plateau Plague focus (Paraiba, Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
ZEPPELINI,CAIO G.; DE ALMEIDA,ALZIRA M.P.; CORDEIRO-ESTRELA,PEDRO.
Abstract Plague is a zoonosis caused by Yersinia pestis, whose cycle is based on a reservoir system composed of mammals and their fleas. Its transmission cycle presents long enzootic periods with undetected cases, sometimes misleading that the cycle is extinct. While surveillance activities in Brazil are being carried out only in some focal areas, the serologic results confirm the persistence of Y. pestis in all monitored areas. We studied the small mammal assembly and Y. pestis presencein the Borborema Plateau Focus within the state of Paraíba, which staged the last Brazilian plague outbreak (1986-1987), through aninventory and Y. pestis detection survey of small mammals in peridomestic and sylvatic areas from two municipalities in the state of...

Evaluation of phenotypic tests to detect carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in colonized patients hospitalized in intensive care units BJID
Perez,Leandro Reus Rodrigues; Rodrigues,Diógenes; Dias,Cícero Gomes.
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the performance of different phenotypic tests to detect carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Three different phenotypic methods were evaluated: (1) combined-disk test of meropenem plus phenylboronic acid or EDTA reading after 24 h and 48 h; (2) selective/chromogenic read after 24 h and after 48 h; and (3) overnight selective enrichment broth containing 10 µg ertapenem disk followed by culture on MacConkey agar. A positive result in at least one of the methods was submitted to PCR for blaNDM-1, blaOXA-48, blaKPC, blaSPM-1, blaIMP, and blaGES detection. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae was detected in 31 (30.4%) of 102 rectal swabs evaluated. All isolates showed to be KPC-2-producing organisms. Results showed...

Surgical site infection in a university hospital in northeast Brazil BJID
Medeiros,Aldo Cunha; Aires-Neto,Tertuliano; Azevedo,George Dantas; Vilar,Maria José Pereira; Pinheiro,Laíza Araújo Mohana; Brandão-Neto,José.
We examined prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) in a tertiary teaching hospital in northeast Brazil, from January 1994 to December 2003. The survey included 5,742 patients subjected to thoracic, urologic, vascular and general surgery. The criteria for diagnosing SSI were those of the Centers for Disease Control, USA, and the variables of the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance risk index were used. Data analysis revealed that anesthetic risk scores, wound class and duration of surgery were significantly associated with SSI. A total of 296 SSIs were detected among the 5,742 patients (5.1%). The overall incidence of SSI was 8.8% in 1994; it decreased to 3.3% in 2003. In conclusion, the use of educational strategies, based on guidelines for SSI...

Three decades of meningococcal disease in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil BJID
Puricelli,Rubens C. B.; Kupek,Emil; Westrupp,Maria Helena Bittencourt.
Consolidation of data on meningococcal disease surveillance for the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, has provided new insight about the evolution of this disease during the period of 1971-2000. A descriptive epidemiological study, based on retrospective analysis of all cases of meningococcal disease notified in the state of Santa Catarina, linked the surveillance data from the Secretary of the State of Health, magnetic tape records and the data from the national surveillance of diseases of obligatory notification. Following World Health Organization guidelines, cumulative incidence exceeding five cases per 100,000 inhabitants was considered indicative of an epidemic. Official population data from the Fundação Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística...

SENTRY antimicrobial surveillance program report: latin american and brazilian results for 1997 through 2001 BJID
Sader,Helio S.; Jones,Ronald N.; Gales,Ana C.; Silva,Juliana B.; Pignatari,Antonio C..
The alarming emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance among common bacteria threatens the effectiveness of therapy for many infections. Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance is essential to identify the major problems and guide adequate control measures. Several resistance surveillance programs have been implemented in North America and Europe in the last decade; however, very few programs have assessed antimicrobial resistance in Latin American countries. The SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program was initiated in 1997 and represents the most comprehensive surveillance program in place at the present time worldwide. The SENTRY Program collects consecutive isolates from clinically documented infections in more than 80 medical centers...
