Pressure on Cultivated Land in Fengxian County, Jiangsu Province, China AgEcon
Huang, Xiao; Ding, Zhong-Yi; Tao, Yu-Qiong; Lian, Hui-Min.
Based on the introduction of the general situation of research region, pressure index model of cultivated land is adopted according to the data of population, cultivated land area, crop sowing area, grain sowing area, and unit grain yield in the Statistical Yearbook of Fengxian County. The change of relevant factors of cultivated land pressure index over time is analyzed, as well as the tension level of cultivated land resources. Research shows that the pressure on cultivated land is relatively great in Fengxian County in the years 1999-2005. Grain supply and demand is still under the unsafe state. There will be more prominent contradiction between supply and demand of cultivated land in Fengxian County in the future, and the grain security will under...

Assessing Sustainability: Some Conceptual and Empirical Challenges AgEcon
Toman, Michael; Lile, Ronald D.; King, Dennis M..
In this paper we address two related conceptual and practical challenges in assessing "sustainability." The first is the criteria to be used, in particular the relationship between sustainability and measures of economic well-being and the use of monetary versus nonmonetary indicators. The second is the problem of determining which physical scales to use for sustainability assessments when there are multiple and overlapping "communities" or stakeholder groups. While neither set of challenges admits a definitive solution, there has been progress on the first set of issues - in particular, through the development of multicriteria assessment strategies and stakeholder involvement processes. In contrast, the problem of how to assess sustainability in practice...

Using 'Inclusive Wealth' to Measure and Model Sustainable Development in Australia: A working example AgEcon
Harris, Michael; Pearson, Leonie J..
Australia in 1992 adopted the National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development to ensure all future development occurs in a 'sustainable' manner. Measurement of the nation's sustainable development is currently conducted through the OECD Environmental Performance Review and various other ad-hoc indicators or measures have been proposed, such as greening the national accounts (Green Gross National Product) and the Genuine Progress Indicator. No one has identified a clear and precise way to either measure or model sustainable development in Australia. By trialing the implementation of inclusive wealth theory in Australia, this paper aims to identify and comment on the issues of measuring and modelling sustainable development as a stock measure in...

A fenntarthatóság felé való átmenet lehetőségei Magyarországon AgEcon
Palvolgyi, Tamas; Csete, Maria.
A Kárpát-medence páratlan természeti kincseit számos veszély fenyegeti. E veszély elhárítására adhat megoldást a fenntartható fejlődés, melynek ugyan az elmúlt négy évtizedben széles körű szakirodalma jött létre, de világszerte gyengék a gyakorlati eredményei. A jelen tanulmány a gyakorlati megvalósítás, a fenntarthatóság felé való átmenet magyar útját vizsgálja a következő feltételek megvalósításával: 1. Illeszkedés egy hosszabb távú nemzetstratégiai tervhez az átmenet alap-feltételeként. 2. A társadalom fenntarthatóság iránti igényének felkeltése. 3. A magyar gazdaság szuverenitását több, egymással is összefüggő függőségi helyzet gyengíti. A fenntarthatóság gazdasági feltételrendszere érdekében, a helyi adottságokat figyelembe vevő lokális gazdaság...

Main problems of agriculture and rural areas in Poland in the period of transformation and integration with European Union AgEcon
Zegar, Jozef St.; Florianczyk, Zbigniew.
Problems currently observed in Polish agriculture have different origins. Some of them have an historical background, while others are related to systemic transformation and forthcoming accession to the European Union. Most of the problems are common for all the candidate countries and most of them are also observed in the developed economies. Identification of these problems is the main purpose of this article. Special attention is paid to natural, human and capital resources available in rural areas. Possible development paths are pointed out. The article also covers most of the opportunities that may help overcome rural development problems in Poland in the wake of forthcoming accession, and their limitations.

Sustainable Development and Human Resource Capital AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Human resources are central to economic development and can be increased in value and productivity by investment in human beings e.g. in their education and health. But for a considerable period in the past economists stressed the importance of the accumulation of man-made physical capital for economic growth and development to the neglect of human resource capital. Nevertheless, in the second half of the 20th century the importance of human resource capital (particularly education) for economic growth came to be recognised. Nevertheless the implications of the formation of human resource capital for sustainable development were given virtually no in-depth attention but it is important to address this matter, as is done here.

CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY AND AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE: A MARKET INCENTIVES AND LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT APPROACH AgEcon
Saner, Nicola.
The hidden economy surrounding the medicinal plant trade in South Africa is estimated to be worth approximately $60 to $100 billion per annum. There is increasing focus on the role that these resources play in the process of sustainable development. By combining Local Economic Development (LED), incentive structures and resource management systems strategies in the Eastern Cape, biodiversity degradation can be potentially decreased in line with community development goals. Qualitative data comparisons are used to assess the extent of the success of this holistic approach to development using the Umthathi Africulture Project as a case study.

A Performance Analysis of the Supply of Public Goods in Rural Communities Based on the System Implementation Costs - Taking Chongren county Bailu village, Taihe County Yongchang village as examples AgEcon
Zheng, Shuang-sheng.
Based on the survey of Chongren county Bailu village, Taihe county Yongchang village and by focusing on the system implementation costs, the public goods is divided into tangible products and intangible products these 2 parts to carry out a perfomance analysis of the supply of public goods in rural communities. It points out that in both the well-acquainted and rare-acquainted communities in rural areas there are some long-existing informal systems, such as religions. Because of their born nature, the system implementation costs are relatively lower. However, the implementation costs of the embedded foreign systems are relatively higher because of their weaker lasting features and the rare social basis. Therefore, proposing putting the efficient supply of...

Policy Analysis for Sustainable Land Management and Food Security in Ethiopia: A Bioeconomic Model with Market Imperfections Food Security in Ethiopia AgEcon
Holden, Stein T.; Shiferaw, Bekele A.; Pender, John L..
Soil fertility and the lack of fertilizer use in Africa are frequently discussed topics. The problems of land degradation and low agricultural productivity, which result in food insecurity and poverty, are particularly severe in the rural highlands of Ethiopia. In many areas, a downward spiral of land degradation and poverty appears to be occurring. Finding solutions to these problems requires identifying effective entry points for farmers, governments, and civil society organizations, and understanding the potential impacts and tradeoffs that are likely to arise from alternative interventions. This report seeks to improve that understanding, using a bioeconomic model of land management and agricultural production developed for a community that is fairly...

TURISMO NO ESPAÇO RURAL: A IMPORTÂNCIA DO PLANEJAMENTO DAS INSTALAÇÕES PARA MINIMIZAR OS IMPACTOS CAUSADOS PELO EXCESSO DE CARGA NOS AMBIENTES RURAIS E NATURAIS. AgEcon
Andre, Joao Vicente; Silvestre, Ronie Peterson.
As instalações no meio rural...

Local sustainability in Hungary – an analysis of the factors that determine the low number of LA21 strategies AgEcon
Baják, Imre; Torcsvari, Zsolt.
The concept of sustainable development is currently one of the most important concepts in the world. The implementation of the global idea is in the hands of local communities. The success of LA21 initiatives largely depends on two important factors: the bottom-up initiatives of the community based on voluntary participation and the support from the national government. In the case of Hungary we examine central government initiatives to date, as well as the factors that determine the success of bottom-up initiatives. As an illustration we present some of the findings of a survey we conducted in the micro-region of Gyöngyös.

SOCIOECONOMIC AND INSTITUTIONAL DETERMINERS OF DURABLE TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN THE FOOD-PRODUCING AGRICULTURE OF CAMEROON AgEcon
Temple, Ludovic; Kwa, Moise; Bikoi, Achile.
The challenges posed by food security for populations in sub-Saharan Africa and the fact that extensive production systems are reaching their limits in food-producing agriculture imply accelerating technological innovation toward ecological intensification of agricultural production systems. A review of research on plantain banana in Cameroon since 1988 revealed how institutional innovation enabled hybridization of different forms of research (fundamental, systems, and action research) and reinforced the organizational innovation required for technical change. Evaluation of impacts underlined the complementarity between an increase in productivity and in income in rural areas, the production of human and social capital and the protection of forest resources.

Equilibrium management of fisheries with altruistic overlapping generations AgEcon
Ekeland, Ivar; Karp, Larry S.; Sumaila, Ussif Rashid.
We imbed a classic fishery model, where the optimal policy follows a Most Rapid Approach Path to a steady state, into an overlapping generations setting. The current generation discounts future generations’ utility flows at a rate possibly different from the pure rate of time preference used to discount their own utility flows. The resulting model has non-constant discount rates, leading to time inconsistency. The unique Markov Perfect equilibrium to this model has a striking feature: provided that the current generation has some concern for the not-yet born, the equilibrium policy does not depend on the degree of that concern.
