Corallimorphus profundus in shallow Antarctic habitats: Bionomics, histology, and systematics (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia) Naturalis

In March 2000 and November/December 2001 thirteen specimens of Corallimorphus profundus Moseley, 1877, a conspicuous, anemone-like cnidarian, were hand-sampled by SCUBA diving in 30 to 40 m depth off US Palmer Station, Antarctic Peninsula. Corallimorphus species were formerly recorded only from deep water habitats from where they had been brought up more or less damaged, with most of their epithelia lost or macerated. The present well preserved specimens offer the opportunity to study various aspects of the species’ morphology and biology, particularly as one mature female contained a full cycle of oogenesis besides two batches of brooded developmental stages. Diversity of gall-forming rusts (Uromycladium, Pucciniales) on Acacia in Australia Naturalis

Uromycladium tepperianum has been reported on over 100 species of Acacia, as well as on the closely related plant genera, Falcataria, Racosperma and Paraserianthes. Previous studies have indicated that U. tepperianum may represent a complex of host-specific, cryptic species. The phylogenetic relationships between 79 specimens of Uromycladium were determined based on a concatenated dataset of the Small Subunit, the Internal Transcribed Spacer and the Large Subunit regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA, and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3. Revision of Coelogyne section Verrucosae (Orchidaceae): a new sectional delimitation based on morphological and molecular evidence Naturalis

Section Verrucosae Pfitzer & Kraenzl. of the genus Coelogyne Lindl. is revised using morphological and molecular data. Eight species are recognized, including two new ones ( C. marthae and C. verrucosa). One name is reduced to synonymy. Four species formerly included by several authors in sect. Verrucosae (C. brachyptera, C. papillosa, C. parishii and C. virescens) are excluded. Taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the coral genera Australomussa and Parascolymia (Scleractinia, Lobophylliidae) Naturalis

Novel micromorphological characters in combination with molecular studies have led to an extensive revision of the taxonomy and systematics of scleractinian corals. In the present work, we investigate the macro- and micromorphology and the phylogenetic position of the genera Australomussa and Parascolymia, two monotypic genera ascribed to the family Lobophylliidae. The molecular phylogeny of both genera was addressed using three markers, the partial mitochondrial COI gene and the nuclear histone H3 and the ribosomal ITS region. A review of the subgenus Hemioptica Roger of the genus Polyrhachis Fr. Smith with description of a new species (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Formicinae) Naturalis

The genus-group taxon Hemioptica Roger is reviewed and treated as a subgenus of Polyrhachis Fr. Smith. Three species are recognised: P. bugnioni Forel, P. scissa (Roger), and P. boltoni spec. nov. Previously included taxa P. abrupta Mayr, P. aculeata Mayr and P. pubescens Mayr are transferred to the subgenus Polyrhachis (Myrma) Billberg. A key to species of Hemioptica is provided; distribution ranges of individual species are given and known ecological data summarised. A lectotype is designated for P. scissa (Roger).

Zymoseptoria gen. nov.: a new genus to accommodate Septoria-like species occurring on graminicolous hosts Naturalis

The Mycosphaerella complex is both poly- and paraphyletic, containing several different families and genera. The genus Mycosphaerella is restricted to species with Ramularia anamorphs, while Septoria is restricted to taxa that cluster with the type species of Septoria, S. cytisi, being closely related to Cercospora in the Mycosphaerellaceae. Species that occur on graminicolous hosts represent an as yet undescribed genus, for which the name Zymoseptoria is proposed. Based on the 28S nrDNA phylogeny derived in this study, Zymoseptoria is shown to cluster apart from Septoria. Morphologically species of Zymoseptoria can also be distinguished by their yeast-like growth in culture, and the formation of different conidial types that are absent in Septoria s.str....

Diaporthe: a genus of endophytic, saprobic and plant pathogenic fungi Naturalis

Diaporthe (Phomopsis) species have often been reported as plant pathogens, non-pathogenic endophytes or saprobes, commonly isolated from a wide range of hosts. The primary aim of the present study was to resolve the taxonomy and phylogeny of a large collection of Diaporthe species occurring on diverse hosts, either as pathogens, saprobes, or as harmless endophytes. In the present study we investigated 243 isolates using multilocus DNA sequence data. Analyses of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2) region, and partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1), beta-tubulin (TUB), histone H3 (HIS) and calmodulin (CAL) genes resolved 95 clades. Barriopsis iraniana and Phaeobotryon cupressi: two new species of the Botryosphaeriaceae from trees in Iran Naturalis

Species in the Botryosphaeriaceae are well known as pathogens and saprobes of woody hosts, but little is known about the species that occur in Iran. In a recent survey of this family in Iran two fungi with diplodia-like anamorphs were isolated from various tree hosts. These two fungi were fully characterised in terms of morphology of the anamorphs in culture, and sequences of the ITS1/ITS2 regions of the ribosomal DNA operon and partial sequences of the translation elongation factor 1-α. Molluscs from the Miocene Pebas Formation of Peruvian and Colombian Amazonia Naturalis

The mollusc fauna of the Miocene Pebas Formation of Peruvian and Colombian Amazonia contains at least 158 mollusc species, 73 of which are introduced as new; 13 are described in open nomenclature. Four genera are introduced (the cochliopid genera Feliconcha and Glabertryonia, and the corbulid genera Pachyrotunda and Concentricavalva) and a nomen novum is introduced for one genus (Longosoma). A neotype is designated for Liosoma glabra Conrad, 1874a. The Pebas fauna is taxonomically dominated by two families, viz. the Cochliopidae (86 species; 54%) and Corbulidae (23 species; 15%). A new species of Neanthes (Annelida, Polychaeta, Nereididae) from Brazil, and some remarks on Neanthes Bruaca Lana & Sovierzoski, 1987 Naturalis

A new species of Nereididae, Neanthes ceciliae n. sp., is described based on a large number of specimens, providing details about morphological variations in juveniles, adults and epitokes. Neanthes ceciliae n. sp. differs from its congeneric species in the number of conical paragnaths and morphology of the parapodia. Neanthes bruaca Lana & Sovierzoski (1987) is redescribed based on type material and additional specimens from São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. The morphology of the parapodia is detailed and additional characters are added to the diagnosis.

An obscure species of the large leptolid genus Sertularia, S. notabilis Fraser, 1947, originally described from Tortuga Island, Venezuela, and not recorded since, is re-described and recorded from Brazilian coastal waters. This material is compared with Fraser’s type series; its relationship with Sertularia hattori Leloup, 1940, from Japanese and Korean waters, is discussed and possible conspecificity evaluated.

Soft-sediment ichnotaxa from the Cenozoic White Limestone Group, Jamaica, West Indies Naturalis

Jamaica, the third largest of the Greater Antillean islands, exposes various lithological units that are dominated by Cenozoic carbonate rocks including those of the mid-Cenozoic White Limestone Group. This Group is comprised of six formations, the Troy, Swanswick, Somerset, Moneague, Montpelier and Pelleu Island formations. An uncommon but moderately diverse, poorly to moderately preserved softsediment ichnofauna is described herein from several of these, namely the Moneague, Montpelier and Pelleu Island formations, which have yielded 15 ichnogenera represented by 27 ichnospecies. On several occasions, shrimps belonging to a new species of the genus Typhlatya were collected in a cave in the province of Castellón, Spain. This is the first record of the genus in the Iberian Peninsula. The species is described and the validity, distribution, and zoogeography of the genus, as well as the status of the genus Spelaeocaris, are discussed. Former models for the evolution of the genus Typhlatya and its genus group are reviewed, as well as the system of inner classification of the Atyidae and its biogeographical meaning. Two new Brazilian species of Tachia (Gentianaceae: Helieae) Naturalis

Two new species of Tachia (Gentianaceae: Helieae) are described from Brazil. They share the unusual characteristic of quadrangular, winged stems, formerly only known from Tachia longipes in Suriname. They differ from this species in their larger, winged, keeled, and long-acuminate calyx lobes. Tachia lancisepala, spec. nov., is only known from one collection from the State of Rondônia in Brazil, and has unusually large and broadly funnelshaped corollas and ovate leaves with winged petioles. Tachia siwertii, spec. nov., has been found in three separate areas in southern Amazonas and Pará (Brazil) and is characterized by more elliptic leaves, unwinged petioles, and a narrower corolla than T. lancisepala.

The value of the D1/D2 and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) domains for the identification of yeast species belonging to the genus Yamadazyma Naturalis

In a taxonomic study of yeasts that have been isolated in French Guiana and Thailand, five yeast strains isolated from plants were found to belong to the Yamadazyma clade of Saccharomycotina. On the basis of morphology, physiology and the nucleotide divergence in the D1/D2 domain of the 26S nuclear ribosomal RNA (nrRNA) gene, as well as the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) domain of the nrRNA gene operon, these strains were identified to represent three novel species in this teleomorphic clade. Two new Semi-slugs from Gambon, Western Afreca (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Urocyclidae) Naturalis

Zonitarion dewildei spec. nov. and Z. wakaensis spec. nov., both belonging to the subgenus Belonarion, are described from the rain-forest area of Gabon, western Africa. This is the first record of urocyclid semi-slugs from this malacologically poorly known area. Descriptions are provided of both external and internal organs, viz., jaw, radula, genital system, pallial organs and spermatophore.

Taxonomic revision of Ustilago, Sporisorium and Macalpinomyces Naturalis

Morphological characters within the Ustilago-Sporisorium-Macalpinomyces complex are defined explicitly. The genera Sporisorium and Anthracocystis are emended to reflect morphological synapomorphies. Three new genera, Langdonia, Stollia and Triodiomyces are described based on soral synapomorphies and host classification. The new classification of the Ustilago-Sporisorium-Macalpinomyces complex incorporates 142 new taxonomic combinations.

Nausithoe aurea n. sp. (Scyphozoa: Coronatae: Nausithoidae), a species with two pathways of reproduction after strobilation: sexual and asexual Naturalis

Nausithoe aurea, a new species of scyphozoan Coronatae, is described from São Paulo State, Brazil. The solitary scyphistomae, with some zooxanthellae, strobilated producing planuloids and medusae; this represents an intermediate life cycle between that of metagenetic Nausithoidae and the submarine cave-dwelling, reduced medusa stage of Nausithoe planulophora (Werner, 1971). The periderm tube of the scyphistomae has 16 internal cusps in all whorls. The medusae present yellow pigment spots in most of their lappets. The early embryonic development is briefly described. Planuloid formation is hypothesized as explanation for polyp-stage philopatry.
