Government-industry co-management arrangements within the south african deep-sea hake fishery OceanDocs
Hutton, T.; Raakjaer Nielsen, J.; Mayekiso, M..
As part of a global comparative study of user-participation in fisheries management, a neo-institutional economic framework analysis is applied to the South African Deep-sea Hake Fishery to evaluate past and present co-management arrangements. It is postulated that the comprehensive partnerships that exist will struggle to remain legitimate and functional during major changes in the access-rights regime. The government is redistributing quota to new entrants and previously-disadvantaged South Africans, resulting in competition between the established demersal trawl fleet and a new longline sector for access rights. The established industry is currently undertaking restructuring via investment schemes, joint ventures and share agreements. The relationship...

Estructura de las comunidades de la meiofauna de la Bahía de Nipe, Cuba OceanDocs
Cuervo, Z.; Armenteros, M.; Capetillo, N.; Arencibia, G.; Pérez, I.; González, G..
The structure of meiofaunal communities was surveyed in 17 stations in Nipe Bay, Cuba in July, 2001. Levels of Nickel (all stations) are higher than in several bays in Cuba, probably due to natural causes. The levels of Copper, Zinc, Fe and Manganese indicate a relative low pollution, likely related to the presence of urban settlements. There is decrease in the total density and number of taxa of meiofauna in the stations with higher levels of metals; the copepods appear to be particularly sensitivity to metal pollution. The stations located at the mouth of the bay have the lowest levels of contamination and the highest total density of organisms and taxa richness, probably due to a more intense turnover of the waters in this area and consequent lower...

Floodplain fishery of the lower Sondu-Miriu River with emphasis on the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) (Linnaeus) OceanDocs
Manyala, J.O..
Experimental beach seine surveys in 1990 in the lower Sondu-Miriu River in Kenya indicate a potential catch rate of up to 59.8 kg ha super(-1) hr super(-1). Lates niloticus dominated the catches in the lower reaches (37.5%), while catches in the upper reaches were dominated by Labeo victorianus, Schilbe mystus and Barbus altianalis. L. victorianus contributed up to 84.8% of the catch in the upper reaches by weight. Catches in the floodplain were dominated by Oreochromis niloticus, O. variabilis and Clarias gariepinus, which contributed more than 50% by weight. The size frequency distribution of L. niloticus suggests that larger specimens occur in the river as compared to the floodplain.

Effects of physical mixing on the environment of satellite lakes and dams of lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Guya, F.; Wakwabi, E.; Jembe, T.; Osumo, W.; Sitoki, L.; Ogutu, Z..
In the Lake Victoria (Kenya) catchment are found several small lakes and dams. The satellite lakes and dams are important aquifers and buffer zones for the lake. Besides the water bodies are important water sources both for livestock and domestic use. A study conducted in the water bodies between January 2003 and December 2004 showed that effects of eutrophication are wide spread in the lakes and dams. An investigation of primary productivity and effects of physical mixing and material transport was done. In Lake Sare, Lake Victoria waters are transported to the satellite lake during both day and night through Goye causeway that connects the two. The water bodies have higher rates of primary productivity than Lake Victoria. Spatial extent of oxygen...

Fishing and poverty levels around Lake Victoria (Kenya) OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Omwega, R.N.; Lwenya, C..
Fishing is known to be one of the oldest occupations of mankind and in Lake Victoria (Kenya); it has been largely practiced at artisanal levels. Despite this, poverty amongst the fisher folk remains high. Why the fisher folk remain in perpetual poverty was the key research question for this study. Sampling was conducted on 12 landing beaches between June and August 2004. Data was obtained using survey questionnaires; personal interviews were made using open-ended questions and beach observations. Results from this study indicates that 179 fishers sampled earned an average income of Ksh. 107,063 each in a year with modal income of Ksh. 57,600 while in a day they earned an average income of Ksh. 518 each with modal income of Ksh. 200. Fishers perceived that...

Implications of climate change on the management of Rift Valley lakes in Kenya. The case of lake Baringo OceanDocs
Ngaira, Josephine K..
Climate patterns of the World became very variable during the last half of the twentieth century. Causes of this variability/change have been identified as: Sun Spot activity, ozone depletion, decline in the solar beam, with the more pronounced especially in Africa being Increased atmospheric carbondioxide, and albedo change due to anthropogenic factors. The most affected weather elements by the above mentioned factors particularly in the tropics are Rainfall and Temperature, and the climatic environments most affected by the named weather elements are the arid and semi-arid lands which are already moisture constrained. The rift valley in Kenya, where most of the lakes are located experience Arid and Semi-Arid climate. The lakes located in this region are...

Concentraciones de nutrientes y eutrofización en arrecifes coralinos de los archipiélagos Los Canarreos y Sabana-Camagüey OceanDocs
Montalvo, J.F.; Perigó, E..
Coral reefs are very sensitive to the increment in nitrogen concentrations and phosphorus, since these compounds propitiate the macroalgae growth, resulting in the degradation of coral reefs. With the purpose of assessing the degree of nutriphication of the coral reefs in Los Canarreos Archipelago, located in the periphery of the Gulf of Batabanó, and those located in the outer area of Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago (SCA), three samplings were executed in the reefs of Los Canarreos Archipelago (August 1999, March 2000 and August 2000). In SCA, samplings were done in May 2002 and August 2003. The parameters evaluated were nitrates + nitrite, ammonium, total nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus and total phosphorus. The nutrient contents in the reefs located in the...

Socio-economic dimensions of conservation of wetlands in African dry lands: A case study of River Ewaso Ngiro basin in southern Kenya OceanDocs
Gichuki, Nathan N.; Macharia, Jane M..
Wetlands that occur in arid and semi-arid areas have unique characteristics and support unique biodiversity. The permanent wetlands are relatively small and isolated by large areas of dry land. There are however, numerous temporary or seasonal wetlands that contain water for only short period in the year. These wetlands contain water, a critical resource for all people, livestock, wildlife and plant life. The availability of fresh water minerals, pasture and other useful products attract humans, thereby making the wetlands to become focal points of economic development and indeed urbanization. The changing lifestyles of resident communities, such as increased focus on subsistence and commercial agriculture and sedentarization as opposed to nomadic...

Repackaging Marine And Aquatic Information For Fishermen In Ghana: The Way Forward OceanDocs
Cobblah, M.A.; Jiagge, M..
The study is an attempt to provide a model or prototype for basic information on fishing such as required by fishermen in Ghana. It is based on questions raised by the fishermen themselves. Numerous researches have been carried out on marine and aquatic resources but the findings remain abstract to fishermen, the majority of whom are illiterate. The information needs of the fishermen is repackaged in easily comprehensible form. Types of fishing implements, techniques of fish preservation, marketing methods, fish farming and further sources of information are given. The next step is to translate this information into the local languages.

Survey of the extent of human-induced beach erosion problems in Tanzania OceanDocs
Nyandwi, N..
An assessment of the coastal erosion problems along selected stretches around the Zanzibar coastline as well as along the mainland coastline of Tanzania, indicated a significant contribution to the problem by human activities. During the study, 56 eroding beaches were examined to assess the extent of anthropogenic activities to the problem. Human-induced erosion was observed at nine sites. By interfering with natural processes, human activities either initiated erosion or enhanced its rate. The activities identified fall into three categories namely, removal of beach material, removal of the protection against wave battering and obstruction of sediment supply.
