ALTERNATIVE PARAMETER SPECIFICATION IN E, V ANALYSIS: IMPLICATIONS FOR FARM LEVEL DECISION MAKING AgEcon
Adams, Richard M.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Woolery, Bruce A..
This study compares the structure of E, V frontiers under several specifications of expected income and variance parameters with emphasis on fundamental differences in efficient crop mixes. The results are generated using data from a specific production region and a selected set of cropping activities for Wyoming. The risk-efficient frontiers and underlying crop mixes display sensitivity to alternative parameter definitions and suggest that if researchers intend to use the E, V approach in providing decision information to producers, care should be exercised in the choice of income and risk measures.

Agricultural Protection in OECD Countries: Its Cost to Less-Developed Countries AgEcon
Valdes, Alberto; Zietz, Joachim A..
Many less-developed countries (LDCs) are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain the foreign exchange to pay for growing imports of basic food staples as well as the capital goods and raw materials necessary for their growth and modernization. Agricultural performance particularly is affected by a country’s capacity to import fertilizers and other agricultural inputs. Traditionally agriculture for developing countries and is a logical place to turn for increased earnings. The extent to which agricultural exports can be increased affects the patterns of output growth as well as the allocations of resources to crop-specific research and other inputs. In addition, increasing agricultural exports can lead to an increase in the level of income and...

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CAPITAL INTENSIVE AND LABOR INTENSIVE RICE IRRIGATED PERIMETERS IN THE SENEGAL RIVER VALLEY AgEcon
Diallo, Mamadou Dian.
Senegal is heavily dependent on imported food, particularly rice. During the late sixties and early seventies the Sahelian drought made the country painfully aware how dependent its agriculture is on rainfall. Irrigation and full water control systems along the major rivers became the "priority of priorities" in the recent Senegalese national plans. In the Senegal River Valley two major types of irrigation schemes had been implemented along the river valley since 1973: large scale and small scale irrigated perimeters. The objectives are to increase rice production and reduce dependence on foreign imports of rice. This paper analyzed the two types of irrigation schemes in the Senegal River Valley and compares the financial and economic cost of...

A Comparative Study of FAO and USDA Data on Production, Area, and Trade of Major Food Staples AgEcon
Paulino, Leonardo A.; Tseng, Shen Sheng.
The setting of priorities for policy research at the International Food Policy Research Institute depends largely on an understanding of basic national and global trends in food production, consumption, and trade. Although IFPRI draws heavily on the analyses by FAO and other agencies for much of this information, it is also intensely examines the basic data, not only to carefully adjust its own program but to judge independently the key variable in these trends. Initially IFPRI worked largely from USDA data, but recent efforts have depended primarily on FAO statistics. This experience with the published data of both agencies has led Leonardo Paulino and Shen Sheng Tseng to undertake this analyses available to the research community at large, we hope to...

INPUTS, OUTPUTS AND PRODUCTIVITY CHANGE IN THE AUSTRALIAN SHEEP INDUSTRY AgEcon
Lawrence, Denis; McKay, Lloyd.
Tornqvist quantity indexes of output and input are computed for the period 1952/53 to 1976/77 from Australian Sheep Industry Survey data. The computation includes estimating the annual service flow from durable inputs. Total productivity in the sheep industry is estimated to have increased by 2.9 per cent per annum during this 25-year period. While the ratio of capital employed per unit of labour has increased, materials, services and livestock have been the inputs for which the quantity used has increased most rapidly. On the output side, there has been a move towards greater diversification with both crop and cattle enterprises on 'sheep properties' increasing in relative importance.

ECONOMICS OF BEEF COW CULLING AND REPLACEMENT DECISIONS UNDER GENETIC PROGRESS AgEcon
Melton, Bryan E..
Beef cow managers annually face the question of which animals to cull from the herd and replace. The results of this decision affect not only current revenues, but, by altering the genetic composition of the herd, also affect the future profitability of the herd. These genetic changes of the herd may, therefore, be represented as a form of endogenous technological progress to the cow calf producer. This article derives general asset replacement criteria for assets undergoing either exogenous or endogenous progress and illustrates their application with a Florida cow herd example.
