Hydromedusae, morphologically resembling the Indo-Pacific leptomedusa Lovenella assimilis (Browne, 1905) (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Lovenellidae), are reported for the first time in both the eastern English Channel and the southern bight of the North Sea. Analyses of past zooplankton samples from a long-term monitoring program suggest that this non-indigenous species has been present in the eastern English Channel at least since 2007. Genetic analyses identified specimens as Eucheilota menoni based on nearly identical 18S ribosomal RNA gene, mitochondrial cytochrome oxydase subunit gene I (COI) sequences, and 16S Ribosomal RNA gene. Consequently, published morphological descriptions of L. assimilis and E. menoni were compared, and their species status is... |

This is the 38th annual surveillance report concerning the nuclear power plant of Gravelines. Its very high power level results from six plant units located on the shore and is characterised by a cooling system with a coastal surface input and output. The production of electricity began in 1980 and reached maximum in 1986. Surveys concern monitoring of pelagic system (hydrology, microbiology, phytoplankton, and zooplankton), fish populations (larvae and eggs of Sole and Sprat) or crustaceans (shrimps), and benthic macrofauna (intertidal and subtidal). This survey deals with spatial and temporal approaches (i) study of the direct impact by comparison of the input and output seawater stations, (ii) study of medium and long term evolution of the area by... |

The accessory pigment alloxanthin is a well-known taxonomic marker for Cryptophyceae in natural seawater. The use of alloxanthin to estimate in situ zooplankton grazing and selectivity on Cryptophyceae was studied using 2 dominant copepods of the southern North Sea, Temora longicornis and Centropages hamatus. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of water samples and of freshly caught copepods, starvation experiments, and feeding experiments (shipboard bottle-incubations) were carried out. Although alloxanthin was always detected in copepod extracts, (1) no correlation was found with alloxanthin in seawater, and (2) no significant grazing on Cryptophyceae was observed. Results of our gut-evacuation experiments showed that at least 78% of... |

One of the problems concerning studies of fish egg distribution is the weak spatial and temporal resolution due to the workload that examination of a large number of samples would demand. Recently, the development of a new laboratory imaging system, the ZooScan, capable of obtaining relatively good resolution images enables automated zooplankton identification using supervised learning algorithms. This new approach was applied to formalin-fixed fish egg samples collected during French winter IBTS (International Bottom Trawl Surveys) in the Eastern English Channel and the Southern North Sea. Fish egg spatial distributions of seven species based on the microscope and ZooScan identifications were compared. Abundance and distribution maps of winter-spawning... |

Gelatinous zooplankton, including cnidarians, ctenophores, and tunicates (appendicularians, pyrosomes, salps and doliolids), are often overlooked by scientific studies, ecosystem assessments and at a management level. Despite the important economic consequences that they can have on human activities and on the marine foodweb, arguments often related to the costs of monitoring or their coordination, or simply negligence, have resulted in the absence of relevant monitoring programs. A cost-effective protocol has been applied on trawling from existing fishery surveys conducted by national laboratories in England and France. The testing phase has successfully demonstrated the adequacy of such a tool to sample macro- and mega-zooplankton gelatinous organisms in... |

The presence of the demersal Asian copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus is reported for the first time in the southern bight of the North Sea, in both Calais harbour and the coastal waters off Gravelines, France. This is the first record of P. marinus in the Atlantic Ocean sector and the North Sea area. The species was collected in January and October 2010, and in January, February and April 2011. The very low number of collected individuals (0.2 to 4.0 ind.m-3) and the capture of only two ovigerous females and of a few numbers of copepodid CV stages suggest that the species survives and actually reproduces in both sites but does not manage to develop an abundant population. The presence of P. marinus in Calais harbour and coastal waters of the southern... |

The presence of Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865 along the French coasts of the Eastern English Channel and the North Sea (EEC-NS) was established via morphological observation and molecular evidence. The earliest records were from surveys carried out in autumn 2005 in Le Havre harbour (Bay of Seine, EEC) and coincided with the historical introduction of the species in other Northern European waters. Since 2009, the species has also been frequently observed along the French coast of the North Sea. Results indicate M. leidyi has established a selfsustaining population in the Bay of Seine, which may act as a source population for northern European harbours via commercial shipping. |

Aim Invasive species are of increasing global concern. Nevertheless, the mechanisms driving further distribution after the initial establishment of non‐native species remain largely unresolved, especially in marine systems. Ocean currents can be a major driver governing range occupancy, but this has not been accounted for in most invasion ecology studies so far. We investigate how well initial establishment areas are interconnected to later occupancy regions to test for the potential role of ocean currents driving secondary spread dynamics in order to infer invasion corridors and the source–sink dynamics of a non‐native holoplanktonic biological probe species on a continental scale. Location Western Eurasia. Time period 1980s–2016. Major taxa studied ‘Comb... |
