70 hydrothermal sites were observed during the 23 dives of the French submersible Nautile (''Naudur'' cruise, December 1993), at 17-degrees-19-degrees-S on the East Pacific Rise. Large vent-animal communities are present around these sites. The zoological composition of these communities is the same as that of the communities at 11-degrees-13-degrees-N and 21-degrees-N on the East Pacific Rise. However, the distribution of the species on the sites is different from all the other hydrothermal communities; large anemone fields of several hundred square metres, associated with colonies of Bathymodiolus and Calyptogena, have been observed. Fresh lava areas seem to bear the most important biological activity. |

Recent data on the western Mediterranean basin (Joides cruise, Montadert et al., 1970, Auzende et al., 1971, Le Borgne et al., 1971) and its connection with the evolution of the Atlantic area (Le Pichon et al., 1970, Talwani et al., 1971, Le Pichon et al. in writing) lead us, like other authors (Dubourdieu, 1962, Stanley and Mutti, 1968, Ryan, 1969 amongst others) to admit the theory of an opening of the Algero-provencal basin during the Cenozoic era. A series of arguments drove us to formulate the hypothesis of an Oligocene age (in process). This work is in line with this perspective. [...] |

The submersible-study of four segments of the East Pacific Rise between 17 degrees and 18 degrees 40'S, where the spreading rate is greater than 150 mm/a, allows us to confirm the variability of the accretion processes. The segment between 17 degrees and 17 degrees 30'S shows an intense present-day magmatic activity. The one between 18 degrees 10' and 18 degrees 22'S shows a mainly tectonic activity. The segment between 18 degrees 22' and 18 degrees 37'S is an intermediate stage with an axial graben in which fresh lavas were emplaced by an extremely young eruption. On all the segments the hydrothermal activity exists ranging from shimmering water up to black smokers, It is associated with different stages of animal colonization. |

The observations carried out during the "Cyaligure" submersible cruise emphasize the shaping action of the submarine currents and slidings during the Quaternary. The canyons located off the french Riviera (Provence), cut in late Oligocene detrital formations, have been the locus of several phases of in-filling, lithification and cutting phenomena throughout the Messinian epoch up to now. Consequently they can be considered as complex polygenetic structures. The canyons located off SW Corsica appear to be directly cut, in their upper course either in the cristalline basement or in volcanic lava formations. In their median part, they are cut in quaternary sediments and in their lower part in middle or late Miocene sedimentary units. The strong linear NW-SE... |

Based on the study of some seismic-reflection profiles, we demonstrate that the identified sedimentary units show a structural anomaly at the bottom of the North-African continental margin compared to the situation observed on the other margins of the western Mediterranean basin: all the deep Messinian and infra-Messinian deposits are subjected to a flexure when reaching the North-African margin; the created depression is filled by the plio-quaternary deposits. This observation, set back in the geodynamic context of the western Mediterranean, leads to the following interpretation: the North-African margin is a very active margin at a very early evolutional stage. The abnormal structure of the gravity field in the considered region confirms this... |

The aim of the joint French-British CYAPORC submersible cruise was the exploration and sampling of the Porcupine and Goban Escarpments. A paleozoic mesozoic sedimentary cover has been evidenced abov ea caledonian or older cristalline basement on the Porcupine scarp. On the Goban scarp, the observed outcrops are mainly lower Cretaceous carbonates overlying paleozoic sandstones |

In 1995, a joint French‐Japanese cruise (ManusFlux) explored the Manus Spreading Center and some sites of the South Eastern Rift in the Manus Basin off the coast of Papua New Guinea (Figure 1) with the Japanese submersible [Auzende et al., 1996; Gamo et al., 1997]. In the framework of this joint project, called New STARMER, the French and Japanese teams completed the Manaute cruise with the R/V LAtalante and the Ifremer submersible Nautile in April and May 2000. The Manaute cruise explored and sampled volcanic and hydrothermal sites in the eastern part of Manus Basin and on the spreading axis of the Western Ridge (WR). The eastern part of the Manus Basin (Figure 2) was interpreted as a stretched‐back arc basin crust showing alternatively elongated ridges... |

Since 1987, Japanese and French geologists, geophysicists, and biologists have been studying the North Fiji Basin Ridge within the framework of a joint project named STARMER (Science and Technology Agency of Japan—IFREMER of France). This ridge was first geologically, geophysically, and geochemically surveyed during the 1985 SEAPSO 3 cruise of the R/V Jean Charcot [Auzende et al., 1988]. At that time, water sampling and morphotectonic analysis indicated that the North Fiji Basin Ridge was technically and hydrothermally active. Within the STARMER project, four surface ship cruises have been conducted {Kaiyo 87‐88‐89 and Yokosuka 90). One significant result of these surveys is the complete mapping of the entire ridge between 14°S and 22°S (Figure 1), an area... |

On October 19, 1979 off Nice, the upper continental shelf has been affected by a catastrophic event (Gennesseaux et al., 1980). (a) At 2 p.m. (approximate time), following a lowering of the sea level, a tsunami of several meters amplitude reached the Coast line south of Antibes. This was followed during 4 hours by several oscillations of decreasing amplitude, that were felt on a shore length of about 100 km. (b) About the same time, an embanked area 300 m long and wide, collapsed in a few seconds ; after the event the sea-floor in that area was found at a depth of 50 meters. (c) At 17h45 TU and 22h00 TU, two telephone cables have been broken 80 and 110 km off Nice respectively (fig. 1). (d) No earthquake was registered by the Monaco Observatory during this... |

Serial seismic reflection profiles off Tunisia and between Sardinia and Tunisia are presented. Interpretation is given which includes paleozoïc basement and its autochtonous (Eocene and plio-quaternary) and allochtonous (Numidian nappe) cover. Recent tectonic activity is discussed, (Plio-quaternary foundered basins, 'flexure', local uplifts, intrusions). Then the nature of the basement of the Sardinia-Tunisia zone is discussed with respect to the various hypotheses on the region of the Western Mediterranean. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The study of a continuous seismic-reflection profile (Flexotir) carried out in the central part of the Bougie gulf, enabled the identification of a thick sediment series leaning on the continental basement and continuing underneath the abyssal plain. On the one hand, this series contains a formation (D) thought to be a Miocene salt layer, and on the other hand, it keeps the trace of some upheaval and subsidence movements which define the recent tectonic history of the Bougie gulf. No trace of the current compression phenomenon between the Eurasian and African plates could be found. |

The aim of the HYFIFLUX-SONNE 99 cruise was the geological, biological and chemical study of the 2 triple-junctions characterizing the oceanic accretion in the North Fiji Basin. Multibeam bathymetric coverage, in situ observations and sampling confirmed the existence of an active spreading ridge immediately west of the Fiji islands (WFR), and gave an evaluation of the magmatic and hydrothermal activity of the central ridge (CSR). New hydrothermal sites have been discovered and sampled. |
