| Between 2006 and 2008, Ifremer, in collaboration with the polling institute BVA, implemented a pilot survey of french recreational fisheries. The aim of the survey was to assess the overall population involved in this activity, taking into account the diversity of recreational fishing practices, from fish and shellfish gathering on the seashore to angling and spearfishing. | Three fleets of the French fishery are investigated : the dredge fleet of the Western part of the Channel, the bottom-trawl fishery of South-Britanny harbours, and the Mediterranean trawl fishery. Landing and effort data by species, vessel and trip lead to yields (catch per unit of effort) which are analysed by a multicplicative model with two or three factors. Individual fishing powers are then quantified for some given years, together with variation in relative abundance of the stock within area and/or period strata. | During the 1950s, the clam played only a bit part in the local maritime context. It was the focus of a different fleet than the king scallop fleet, with a lesser fishing capacity (fleet from the Relecq Kerhuon) and an average annual catch of around 150 tonnes. | In the Caribbean, snappers (Lutjanidae) and groupers (Serranidae) are often heavily exploited by artisanal or industrial fisheries. This paper analyzes the catches of an artisanal fishery selectively targeting these species with a moderate fishing pressure in the Bay Islands (Honduras), and discusses the implications on the understanding of the early stages of development of reef fisheries.
