Phase Equilibria of the CH4-CO2 Binary and the CH4-CO2-H2O Ternary Mixtures in the Presence of a CO2-Rich Liquid Phase ArchiMer
Legoix, Ludovic; Ruffine, Livio; Donval, Jean-pierre; Haeckel, Matthias.
The knowledge of the phase behavior of carbon dioxide (CO2)-rich mixtures is a key factor to understand the chemistry and migration of natural volcanic CO2 seeps in the marine environment, as well as to develop engineering processes for CO2 sequestration coupled to methane (CH4) production from gas hydrate deposits. In both cases, it is important to gain insights into the interactions of the CO2-rich phase—liquid or gas—with the aqueous medium (H2O) in the pore space below the seafloor or in the ocean. Thus, the CH4-CO2 binary and CH4-CO2-H2O ternary mixtures were investigated at relevant pressure and temperature conditions. The solubility of CH4 in liquid CO2 (vapor-liquid equilibrium) was determined in laboratory experiments and then modelled with the...

Analysis of light hydrocarbons in marine sediments by headspace technique: Optimization using design of experiments ArchiMer
Donval, Jean-pierre; Charlou, Jean-luc; Lucas, L..
Headspace technique is a common method to analyze light hydrocarbons in deep marine sediments. The use of an automatic headspace sampler instead of a manual injection is the guarantee for a better repeatability and furthermore it is less time consuming. But to increase the sensitivity and therefore, to achieve a better detection limit, it is necessary to optimize the automatic headspace sampler parameters. The theory of design of experiments was applied here by studying them. As a response, methane, which is an important gas in marine sediments, was chosen for its short analysis time. Regarding the parameters for automatic headspace sampler, eight variables were selected and then, a screening of them was carried out with a fractional factorial design to...

X-ray synchrotron diffraction study of natural gas hydrates from African margin - art. no. L22303 ArchiMer
Bourry, Christophe; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Brunelli, M; Focsa, C; Chazallon, B.
Natural gas hydrates recovered from the Congo- Angola basin and Nigerian margins are analyzed by synchrotron X- ray powder diffraction. Biogenic methane is the most abundant gas trapped in the samples and others minor components (CO2, H2S) are co-clathrated in a type I cubic lattice structure. The refinement for the type I structure gives lattice parameters of a = 11.8646 ( 39) angstrom and a = 11.8619 ( 23) angstrom for specimens from Congo- Angola and Nigerian margins respectively at 90 K. These values, intermediate between the lattice constant of less pure methane specimens and pure artificial methane hydrates, indicate that lattice constants can be affected by the presence of encaged CO2, H2S and other gas molecules, even in small amounts. Thermal...

Free gas and gas hydrates from the Sea of Marmara, Turkey Chemical and structural characterization ArchiMer
Bourry, Christophe; Chazallon, Bertrand; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Ruffine, Livio; Henry, Pierre; Geli, Louis; Cagatay, M. Namik; Inan, Sedat; Moreau, Myriam.
Gas hydrates and gas bubbles were collected during the MARNAUT cruise (May-June 2007) in the Sea of Marmara along the North Anatolian Fault system, Turkey. Gas hydrates were sampled in the western part of the Sea of Marmara (on the Western High), and three gas-bubble samples were recovered on the Western High, the Central High (center part of the Sea of Marmara) and in the Cinarcik Basin (eastern part of the Sea of Marmara). Methane is the major component of hydrates (66.1%), but heavier gases such as C-2, C-3, and i-C-4 are also present in relatively high concentration. The methane contained within gas hydrate is clearly thermogenic as evidenced by a low C-1/C-2 + C-3 ratio of 3.3, and carbon and hydrogen isotopic data (delta C-13(CH4) of -44.1 parts per...

A comparative Raman spectroscopic study of natural gas hydrates collected at different geological sites ArchiMer
Chazallon, B; Focsa, C; Charlou, Jean-luc; Bourry, Christophe; Donval, Jean-pierre.
Intact natural gas hydrates recovered on the West Aftican margin in the South Atlantic Ocean (ZaiAngo and Neris IIrojects) and from the Norwegian Sea (Hakon Mosby Mud Volcano) are investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy at ambient pressure and low temperature. The gas hydrates collected at different geological sites contain a high methane concentration relative to other minor components that are slightly dispersed in the samples. They crystallize in a type I cubic lattice structure as also confirmed by our preliminary synchrotron diffraction results obtained on the ZaiAngo specimen. However, detailed analysis of selected microscopic areas reveals a variation in the gas distribution among the different specimens. Trace amounts of CO2 and H2S can be...

A giant, 800-m wide pockmark, called Regab, was discovered along the Equatorial African margin at 3160-m water depth and was explored by remote operated vehicle (ROV) as part of the Zaiango (1998-2000) and Biozaire (2001-2003) projects carried out conjointly by TOTAL and a number of French research institutes. A microbathymetric map obtained using the ROV sensors shows that the pockmark actually consists of a cluster of smaller pockmarks aligned N70 along a 15-m deep depression. Methane was recorded all over the pockmark, the highest values along the axis of the depression where massive carbonate crusts and dense seep communities were also found. Several faunal species belong to the Vesicomyidae and Mytilidae bivalve families, as well as to Siboglinidae...

Pore water geochemistry at two seismogenic areas in the Sea of Marmara ArchiMer
Ruffine, Livio; Germain, Yoan; Polonia, Alina; De Prunele, Alexis; Croguennec, Claire; Donval, Jean-pierre; Pitel-roudaut, Mathilde; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Caprais, Jean-claude; Brandily, Christophe; Grall, Celine; Bollinger, Claire; Geli, Louis; Gasperini, Luca.
Within the Sea of Marmara, the highly active North Anatolian Fault (NAF) is responsible for major earthquakes (Mw>=7), and acts as a pathway for fluid migration from deep sources to the seafloor. This work reports on pore water geochemistry from three sediment cores collected in the Gulfs of Izmit and Gemlik, along the Northern and the Middle strands of the NAF, respectively. The resulting data set shows that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the major process responsible for sulfate depletion in the shallow sediment. In the Gulf of Gemlik, depth concentration profiles of both sulfate and alkalinity exhibit a kink-type profile. The Sulfate Methane Transition Zone (SMTZ) is located at moderate depth in the area. In the Gulf of Izmit, the low...

Focused hydrocarbon-migration in shallow sediments of a pockmark cluster in the Niger Delta (Off Nigeria) ArchiMer
De Prunele, Alexis; Ruffine, Livio; Riboulot, Vincent; Peters, Carl A.; Croguennec, Claire; Guyader, Vivien; Pape, Thomas; Bollinger, Claire; Bayon, Germain; Caprais, Jean-claude; Germain, Yoan; Donval, Jean-pierre; Marsset, Tania; Bohrmann, Gerhard; Geli, Louis; Rabiu, Abdulkarim; Lescanne, Marc; Cauquil, Eric; Sultan, Nabil.
The Niger Delta is one of the largest hydrocarbon basin offshore Africa and it is well known for the presence of active pockmarks on the seabed. During the Guineco-MeBo cruise in 2011, long cores were taken from a pockmark cluster in order to investigate the state of its current activity. Gas hydrates, oil and pore-water were sampled for geochemical studies. The resulting dataset combined with seismic data reveal that shallow hydrocarbon migration in the upper sedimentary section was focused exclusively within the pockmarks. There is a clear tendency for gas migration within the hydrate-bearing pockmarks, and oil migration within the carbonate-rich one. This trend is interpreted as a consequence of hydrate dissolution followed by carbonate precipitation...

A joint industrial project with IFREMER and Total provides insights into the tectonic setting and the geochemistry of a large active pockmark offshore W-Africa in the Niger Delta. The study combines both geophysical (seismic) and geochemical data to infer the dynamics of a 300 m wide pockmark located at 667 m water depth. Two Calypso cores, one at the centre and one outside the pockmark, along with three box-cores, two inside the pockmark and one outside, were collected to study the geochemistry of gas hydrates, carbonates and pore waters. Two seismic lines, a 3D high resolution random line and a 2D high resolution seismic line, provide a good description of the plumbing of the system. The integrated results depict a very active pockmark characterized by...

Distribution and behavior of dissolved hydrogen sulfide in hydrothermal plumes ArchiMer
Radford Knoery, Joel; German, C; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Fouquet, Yves.
Through the deep ocean, hydrothermal plumes disperse high concentrations of key chemical tracers including He-3, CH4, Mn, Fe, H2S, etc. This paper focuses on the distribution and behavior of total dissolved sulfide (sulfide hereafter) in hydrothermal plumes to show that its plume concentration decreases to subnanomolar a few kilometers from the vents. We also report on sulfide removal rates determined at in situ conditions; we observe that they are two orders of magnitude greater than for open ocean seawater, consistent with sulfide being detected only in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents. From our observations, we infer that the sole presence of sulfide in hydrothermal plumes locates active venting at the kilometer scale.

Deepwater mantle He-3 plumes over the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (36 degrees N-40 degrees N) and the Azores Platform - art. no. Q03010 ArchiMer
Jean Baptiste, P; Fourre, E; Dapoigny, A; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre.
As part of a multidisciplinary project aimed at studying mid-ocean ridge processes near the Azores, fifty water column profiles were analyzed for He-3/He-4 ratios in dissolved helium (a well-known hydrothermal tracer) from 36 degrees N to 40 degrees N along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and over the Azores Plateau. As expected, large delta(3) He anomalies could be observed over the Rainbow, Lucky Strike, and Menez Gwen hydrothermal sites. The main finding of the present study is the discovery of a large hydrothermal 3 He plume north of the Acor Fracture Zone (north AFZ site), with a CH4/He-3 ratio indicative of a basaltic-hosted hydrothermal system. Clear He-3 and CH4 anomalies, likely corresponding to unknown venting sites too, were also detected in the...

Bougault, Henri; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Fouquet, Yves; Pelle, H.
Responsible for large exchanges between the Ocean and the Lithosphere, oceanic hydrothermalism covers wide scientific domains, from the ocean chemistry to metallogeny. The exploration covers all scales, from the hydrothermal site to the Mid-oceanic ridge system. Modern bathymetry and imagery are required. Physical and chemical anomalies created in the ocean are used to detect and map its distribution. A specific effort in the field of ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) is needed to acquire data at the corresponding working scale.

Corrigendum to “Multiple gas reservoirs are responsible for the gas emissions along the Marmara fault network” ArchiMer

The authors regret a mistake on the value of δ13C of methane for one of the investigated gas samples. This concerns sample MRS-DV3-PE03, taken as end member and for which the correct methane δ13C value is -41.9‰ and not -34‰. The sample was collected at in situ pressure (~100 bars) from a CO2-rich seep, in a liquid state. The mistake likely results from a partial extraction (i.e. done by expansion of the sampler volume to allow vaporization) of the pressurized sample for subsampling. Additional analyses have been carried out from fully vaporized samples. This error has resulted in updating the geochemical diagrams used for the discussion, and revising both the gas origin for sample MRS-DV3-PE03 and the section entitled “Delineation of sources, reservoirs...

Helium transport in sediment pore fluids of the Congo-Angola margin ArchiMer
Chaduteau, Carine; Jean-baptiste, Philippe; Fourre, Elise; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre.
During the ZaiRov2 cruise of the ZaiAngo project (1998-2000) on the passive Congo-Angola margin, several gravity cores were analyzed for helium isotopic composition of sedimentary pore waters in two cold fluid seepage zones: the Astrid slide area and the Regab giant pockmark. Gas concentration and isotopic composition are presented along with thermal data in terms of the origin and circulation of fluids. Helium isotope data lie on a mixing line between bottom seawater and an almost pure radiogenic. Helium and temperature vertical profiles are well described by the classic diffusion-advection equation. On the basis of He profiles, we estimate the advection rate on the rim of the pockmark between 1.2 and 2.3 mm/a. The He flux derived for a pure diffusive...

Roussel, Erwan; Konn, Cecile; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Fouquet, Yves; Querellou, Joel; Prieur, Daniel; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne.
The distribution of Archaea and methanogenic, methanotrophic and sulfate-reducing communities in three Atlantic ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems (Rainbow, Ashadze, Lost City) was compared using 16S rRNA gene and functional gene (mcrA, pmoA and dsrA) clone libraries. The overall archaeal community was diverse and heterogeneously distributed between the hydrothermal sites and the types of samples analyzed (seawater, hydrothermal fluid, chimney and sediment). The Lost City hydrothermal field, characterized by high alkaline warm fluids (pH>11; T<95 °C), harbored a singular archaeal diversity mostly composed of unaffiliated Methanosarcinales. The archaeal communities associated with the recently discovered Ashadze 1 site, one of the deepest active...
