At the beginning of its introduction, following the massive mortality rate of 1970-1971 that struck the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata (COMPS and GRAS 1973), the oyster from the Pacific, Crassostrea gigas, displayed excellent growth in addition to exceptional hardiness and resistance to mortality. But, since 1973, in most of the farming areas, there has been a slowdown in the growth of the oysters and an at times quite pronounced decrease in their quality. It was in order to better understand their adaptation to the environment and the causes of the lowering of their growth rate and their condition that a study was undertaken in 1974, in one of the largest areas of flat cultivation of the Marennes-Oléron basin, located on the east coast of the... |

A microbiological study of the water and substrate in the Belon River was carried out during the summer of 1967, when the stocks of cultured oysters suffered very high mortalities. At the same time as the oyster mortalities there were dramatic decreases in the numbers of organisms, such as the diatoms and dinoflagellates, in the water. The numbers of bacteria, on the other hand, both in the water and in the surface layers of the substrate, reached very high levels, particularly amongst the anaerobic forms. It seems that the death of most of the organisms and the proliferation of the bacteria was due to the arrival of highly saline and cold water, which was rich in nutritive salts and poor in dissolved O sub(2). The augmentation of this water by organic... |

In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two... |

Following the high mortality which killed the Portuguese oysters Crassostrea angulata cultivated on the French coasts, the massive establishment of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas, resisting the disease and the creation of artificial deposits for the latter was decided. In most culture areas, the mortality was estimated at more than 80 % of the stock, but, in some regions, some small populations of Crassostrea angulata subsisted and kept on reproducing. A genetic control of the spawner stocks had to be made. The first step was to know if the oysters living in the same areas were of the same species in order to foresee the next generations and try to improve them (selection). |

A year after the end of the Gill disease which heavily struck the Portuguese oysters Cassostrea angulata Lmk. (Marteil, 1968), a new disease whose causes are still unexplained caused a massive mortality in the same species in the summer of 1970 (Comps, 1972). It can be considered, in 1973, that the successive losses lead to the quasi-extinction of the species C. angulata in the farms of the Marennes basin, since, contrary to what has been done in the case of the Malpèque disease in Canada, the indigenous specious was replaced by another species, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg. |

Sheltered by the Isle of Oléron, benefiting from the supply of fresh water from two rivers, the Charente and the Seudre, the Marennes-Oléron basin enjoys, in Charente-Maritime, a privileged topographical situation. Oyster farming, one of the first forms of marine aquafarming, represents the central business activity of this shoreline of the Charente, whose originality is to own more than 90% of the oyster pits currently listed in France. This peculiarity has been described by several authors: Moreau (1970), Gras (1976), Grelon (1978) and Marteil (1979). |

During the summer of 1970 mortality started in the Marennes-Oléron Basin which affected successively adult oysters, 18 year-old oysters and then the oyster spats collected the same year. Only the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata) was dying whereas the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) showed total resistance. The abnormal fixation of the 1970 spats, followed by an important mortality in this latter, and the large decrease of adult oyster stocks, and therefore of genitors, were also a reason for oyster farmers to worry as the new reproduction season was about to start. Some measures had to be taken in order to compensate for the lack of genitors susceptible of producing a tough and vivacious spat. The good results obtained for a few years with C.... |

The first manifestations of an oyster disease were observed in France in November 1966 in Crassostrea angulata and in October 1967 in Ostrea edulis. The gills and palpi of the diseased molluscs showed rather numerous and large perforations and indentations. The tests for identifying the responsible organism that were attempted by the American researchers based on samples that were sent to them led them to suspect a ringworm, since this kind of infection is considered responsible, in the United States, for significant mortalities in oysters. It is in fact known that mushrooms can infest mollusc larvae in experimental breeds (Sirolpidium zoophtorum) and even the adults (Dermocystidium marinum); just as the epizootic that raged in Europe from 1919 to 1925... |
