ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLING LEAFY SPURGE WITH SHEEP 31
Bangsund, Dean A.; Nudell, Daniel J.; Sell, Randall S.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.), a widely established exotic, noxious, perennial weed, is a major threat to rangeland and wildland in the Upper Great Plains. Chemical, biological, and cultural control methods have limitations in their applicability and effectiveness in treating leafy spurge. However, many of the constraints prohibiting the use of herbicides, tillage, and biological controls do not apply to sheep grazing. Sheep grazing, while known to be effective in controlling leafy spurge since the 1930s, has lacked widespread adoption as a leafy spurge control. A deterministic, bioeconomic model, incorporating relationships between sheep grazing and leafy spurge control, grass recovery, and forage use by cattle, was developed to evaluate the...

NORTH DAKOTA LIGNITE ENERGY INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STATE ECONOMY FOR 2001 AND PROJECTED FOR 2002 31
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
This report provides estimates of the lignite industry's contribution to the North Dakota economy, using key economic indicators such as retail trade activity, personal income, total business activity, employment, and tax revenues. The estimates are based on actual industry expenditures for 2001 and projected expenditures for 2002. This analysis contains two measures of the relative importance of the lignite energy industry in North Dakota. First, the industry's share of the state's total sales to final demand (or exports) is evaluated. Second, the business volume generated by the industry is compared to the total gross business volume for the state. Expenditures were obtained from a survey of firms involved in lignite-related activities (mining or...

The North Dakota Input-Output Model: A Tool for Analyzing Economic Linkages 31
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry; Hertsgaard, Thor A.; Leholm, Arlen G..
North Dakota's input-output model has become an integral part of many economic research activities involving state issues. Since its development to analyze the economic impacts associated with irrigation development in the 1960s, the model has been updated and used to analyze the effects of a wide variety of projects in North Dakota, Because the model is used and referenced frequently by economic researchers, the nontechnical audience often requests additional information to explain the input-output model and the theory behind it. The purpose of this report is to explain the principles of input-output analysis, to describe the structure of the North Dakota model, and to explain how to interpret the results that might be found in a feasibility or economic...

Economic Contribution of the Soybean Industry to the North Dakota Economy 31
Bangsund, Dean A.; Olson, Frayne E.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The purpose of this study was to measure the economic contribution of the soybean industry to the North Dakota economy. Expenditures and returns from soybean production, grain handling, and transportation were estimated to calculate the direct economic impacts from soybean activities. Secondary economic impacts were estimated using the North Dakota Input- Output Model. Soybean production in North Dakota has trended upward over the past three decades. Increases in acreage were relatively modest in the 1980s, but by the mid 1990s acreage was beginning to rapidly expand. In 1990, North Dakota had about 500,000 acres of soybeans. By 2000, acreage had increased to 1.9 million acres. By 2009, soybean acreage in the state was approaching 4 million acres. Direct...

ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION IN NORTH DAKOTA 31
Vanwechel, Tamara; Gustafson, Cole R.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The U. S. biodiesel industry is rapidly expanding due to energy production concerns, environmental concerns, and recent legislation. The most common type of biodiesel in the United States is derived from soybean oil. Soybeans are a major crop in North Dakota and could easily supply a 5 million gallon per year biodiesel facility. Potential market segments of a biodiesel facility in North Dakota include agriculture, construction, and state fleet sectors based on current diesel use. However, with existing technology and no subsidy, biodiesel operation and investment costs for a North Dakota facility are not competitive with petroleum diesel. Using soybean oil prices of 17 cents to 25 cents per pound, the per gallon cost of producing diesel in...
