Æblehvepsen (Hoplocampa testudinea) giver store udbyttetab i æbler. |

6 different soil treatments: Mechanical weeding to the middle of the alleyway, mechanical weeding using 3 different equipments Clemens, Humus and a dish harrow, Soil covering with wheat straw and natural vegetation were combined with 3 rootstocks: M9, J9 and M26 to find the best combination for the apple variety 'Retina'. The trees were planted in the winter 1997/1998, only sprayed at primary RIMpro warnings and drip irrigated. The tree growth, nutrient content of the leaves in august, yield and fruit quality were determined. The rootstock J9 had the highest yield and the biggest amount marketable fruit. Mechanical cleaning to the middle of the alleyways, tree row weed control using Humus or soil covering with straw gave the highest yield and marketable... |

One of the control strategies of fungal crop diseases is planting highly resistant varieties. However selection pressure on the pathogen, imposed by major resistance genes, leads to the development of new virulent races. In most cases breakdown of resistance has been reported for crop-pathogen systems with a genetically uniform crop distributed over large areas [2]. To reach this objective, we start a study that combined population modeling with genetics to (1) identify keys traits of life of the pathogen involved in resistance breakdown... |

The objective of REPCO is to contribute to the replacement of copper fungicides in organic agriculture by new measures for control of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) in grapevine and scab (Venturia inaequalis) in apple. Both major European organic crops strongly depend on copper fungicides. Permitted amounts will be reduced stepwise during the following years (Council Regulation (EEC) 2092/91, Annex II) to avoid environmental risks. In European countries where copper fungicides are already out of use, production of organic apples suffers severe economical problems because of insufficient scab control. Potentiators of resistance, organically based fungicides and biocontrol agents are screened and evaluated in apple. Effects of crop management practices... |

To ensure a high, stable production of blackcurrant juice in Denmark, it is necessary with high-yielding blackcurrant cultivars, which are resistant against pest and diseases, and that have a high sensory quality and high health value. In this experiment, blackcurrant juice processed from berries of 12 organic cultivars was screened. A trained sensory panel using descriptive sensory profiling evaluated the sensory quality of the juice samples. In addition, the aroma profile and the content of vitamin C were determined in the juice samples. The results showed that the following sensory attributes: blackcurrant aroma, blackcurrant flavour, fruity flavour, pungent flavour, sweetness and sourness varied significantly in the 12 juice samples. In addition the... |

The apple variety 'Retina' is recommended for organic production in Denmark. Yet, there is no knowledge regarding the optimal rootstock for this variety. Better knowledge is also needed on production techniques, such as weed control, where different machinery for mechanical weeding is available. Therefore, we tested the combined effect of different rootstocks and weeding techniques including soil covering with straw. As organic growers discus the necessity of weed cleaning at all, the natural vegetation was used as control treatment in the trials. |

Most of the currently grown commercial fruit cultivars remain unsuitable to low-input or sustainable organic farming systems. The major reason is that they have been developed and selected under high input cultivation, and without sufficient attention to susceptibility to pests and diseases. Some of these cultivars are nevertheless marketed as resistant because they carry genetic markers for major resistance genes but these are unfortunately prone to break-down (most of apple resistant cultivars relay only on the Vf). As a result, new fruit cultivars tend to reveal unexpected and often undesirable traits when grown in commercial organic orchards, and thus fail to bring about the much needed expansion in organic production and market availability. However,... |

Organic apples are often sold for fresh consumption and therefore have to obtain high quality requirements. The fruits must obtain the right size and be undamaged without important infections of pest and diseases. Apple scab causes brown or black spots on the fruits and severe infections can result in fruits not suitable for consumption. This disease causes big reduction in yield and quality in organic production. Copper is an effective fungicide to control diseases and is used in organic apple production in some European countries. Copper has not been permitted in Denmark the last 10 years and the European Union wants to reject it from the list of pesticides permitted in organic production. To improve the quality and yield in organic apple production, it... |
