The hyperbenthos is a term applied to the association of small animals living in the water layer close to the sea bed. The species composition of the hyperbenthos is distinctly different from that of other benthic and planktonic groupings, and includes endemic species, planktonic species derived from their downward extensions (often with seasonal periodicity) and endo- or epibenthic species as they emerge into the water column (usually in diel cycles). In nearly all marine ecosystems investigated to date, there is a general increase in the biomass at the benthic boundary layer (hyperbenthon) relative to the water column immediately above it, yet the zone and its fauna remain relatively poorly studied. The intertidal fauna of a Belgian sandy beach was sampled on an hourly basis with a hand-pushed sledge to study circadiel patterns in species composition. Four assemblages could be distinguished with classification and ordination techniques. A first division separated the samples taken during daytime from the night samples. Both assemblages were subsequently divided into an ebbtide and a floodtide situation. Light intensity and tidal height were the most important variables explaining the variation in the Canonical Correspondence Analysis. |

The hyperbenthic mysids and euphausiids of the subtidal shallow coastal waters (the Voordelta) and the Westerschelde estuary in the Delta area (SW Netherlands) were regularly sampled between 1988 and 1991. Two salt marshes in the brackish part of the estuary were studied in the same period. Eight mysid species and one euphausiid species were identified. The spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of all species are described. The most abundant species in the coastal area is <i>Schistomysis spiritus</i>, followed by <i>Mesopodopsis slabberi, Schistomysis kervillei</i>, and <i>Gastrosaccus spinifer</i>. Within the timespan of a few decades, the harbour seal almost completely disappeared from the estuaries in the south-west of the Netherlands. In 1960 a population of around 350 animals still lived in the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde area. About a quarter of this population lived in the Oosterschelde. At present less than 17 animals can be regularly observed in the whole area. Human influences are responsible for the rapid decline of the population. Initially the high hunting pressure and later environmental pollution are the main causes. Loss of habitat and disturbance at the resting places are additional important factors. A first assessment of the ecological importance of the hyperbenthic fauna in coastal and estuarine systems was made in December 1988 in a pilot study (41 stations) covering the Westerschelde and Oosterschelde estuaries, and part of the neighbouring shallow coastal area, the Voordelta. Multivariate analysis revealed three major gradients which could be divided into seven spatially defined hyperbenthic communities. Canonical Correspondence Analysis was applied to correlate these species assemblages with a number of environmental variables measured at each station. The dynamics of meiobenthic community were investigated on sandy sediments of the pilot station of Zoagli (Ligurian Sea) between January 1991 and January 1992. Meiofaunal densities ranged between 447 (April) and 3421 (July) ind./10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant group comprising on the average 75 % of the total fauna. Harpacticoid copepods were the second most abundant group (from 1.7 to 55.3 %) followed by Turbellaria (on the average 5.5 % of total fauna) and Polychaeta (on average 1.2 % of total fauna). The importance of several environmental parameters (such as total organic matter, grain size and RPD depth) in structuring the meiobenthic community is discussed. |

Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment.
