Carbon footprints of organic dairying in six European countries—real farm data analysis Organic Eprints
Hietala, Sanna Maria; Smith, Laurence; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Kurpa, Sirpa; Padel, Susanne; Hermansen, John E..
Dairy farming is the largest agricultural contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. In this study, the carbon footprint of organic dairying was evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment, based on real farm data from six European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy and United Kingdom. A total of 34 farms were analysed. The assessment was carried out using an attributional approach with system boundaries from cradle to farm gate. In relation to dairy production, a functional unit of 1 kg of energy corrected milk was used. The results gave an average of 1.32 kg CO2 equivalents per kilogramme of energy-corrected milk with standard deviation of 0.22, which is consistent with recent studies. The main contributor to this is enteric...

Conversion to Organic Production Software (OrgPlan, OF0159) Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
This is the final report for Defra Project OF0159. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. This involves an assessment of the current situation of the farm, based on which proposals for an organic 'target (endpoint)' can be developed. This includes proposed rotation(s), cropping and stocking plan for the specific farm situation and the proposals need to be tested for their technical and financial feasibility, including impact on forage supply, nutrient requirements and financial...

Padel, Susanne; Niggli, Urs; Pearce, Bruce; Schlüter, Marco; Schmid, Otto; Cuoco, Eduardo; Willer, Helga; Huber, Machteld; Halberg, Niels; Micheloni, Cristina.
The Implementation Action Plan completes TP Organics’ trilogy of key documents of the Research Vision to 2025 (Niggli et al 2008) and the Strategic Research Agenda (Schmid et al 2009). The Implementation Action Plan addresses important areas for a successful implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda. It explores the strength of Europe’s organic sector on the world stage with about one quarter of the world’s organic agricultural land in 2008 and accounting for more than half of the global organic market. The aims and objectives of organic farming reflect a broad range of societal demands on the multiple roles of agriculture and food production of not only producing commodities but also ecosystem services. These are important for Europe’s economic...

Organic Dairy Production - A Review Organic Eprints
Nicholas, Phillipa; Padel, Susanne; Cuttle, S P; Fowler, S M; Hovi, M; Lampkin, N H; Weller, R F.
Organic farming aims to create an integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural system. For organic dairy systems, the fulfilment of these aims requires the understanding and integration of a number of systems components including land use (mixed or dairy only) and stocking rate; grassland and forage production (including quantity and quality); potential milk yield (and milk quality); animal nutrition (largely farm based) and health; environmental sustainability such as farm nutrient balance; the financial status of the farm (including enterprise performance, fixed costs and labour use and farm income and profit) and finally the policy environment in which organic dairy systems operate. This review discusses worldwide...

Public goods and farming Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Pearce, Bruce; Padel, Susanne; Hitchings, Roger; Measures, Mark.
There has recently been an increase in interest in the “public goods” that could be provided by a farm alongside its primary function of agricultural production. This paper reviews recent reports on the topic of public goods and, in particular, the public goods provided by agriculture and then goes on to discuss the development of a tool which can be used to assess the provision of public goods on a farm across a range of areas: soil management, biodiversity, landscape and heritage, water management, manure management and nutrients, energy and carbon, food security, agricultural systems diversity, social capital, farm business resilience, and animal health and welfare.

EU organic logo and its perception by consumers Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Padel, Susanne; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Purpose – With the introduction of the mandatory European Union (EU) organic logo for all organic food products in 2010, the European Commission aimed at fostering the internal organic food market. This needs consumers’ knowledge of the logo. According to earlier research consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo is low. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to elicit consumers’ attitudes towards organic certification and labelling and to develop recommendations on how to improve consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo. Design/methodology/approach – By means of an online survey with 3,000 participants in six European countries, knowledge of the logo and attitudes towards organic farming and European labelling, as well as organic food purchase...

Using the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART) for the Systematic Analysis of Trade-Offs and Synergies between Sustainability Dimensions and Themes at Farm Level Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Landert, Jan; Muller, Adrian; Ssebunya, Brian; Blockeel, Johan; Weisshaidinger, Rainer; Petrasek, Richard; Mészáros, Dóra; Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Lindenthal, Thomas; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
When trying to optimize the sustainability performance of farms and farming systems, a consideration of trade-offs and synergies between different themes and dimensions is required. The aim of this paper is to perform a systematic analysis of trade-offs and synergies across all dimensions and themes. To achieve this aim we used the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART)-Farm Tool which operationalizes the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA) Guidelines by defining science-based indicator sets and assessment procedures. It identifies the degree of goal achievement with respect to the 58 themes defined in the SAFA Guidelines using an impact matrix that defines 327 indicators and 1769 relations between...

The Development Of The European Market For Organic Products: Insights From A Delphi Study Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Midmore, Peter.
The purpose of the paper is present experiences using a well established forecasting tool, the Delphi- method, to explore the dynamics of, and prospects for the development of the market for organic food in Europe. DELPHI, developed by the Rand co-operation to improve military technology forecasting, uses expert feedback to refine an informed perspective on complex or uncertain issues. This study used experts of the organic food market in 18 countries to explore factors influencing the development of the organic market; future market prospects, and the role of governments in future market development. The results show that short supply chains and focus on regional organic shops may be an indication of an earlier stage of market development, likely to be...

Transitions to Agroecological Systems: Farmers’ Viewpoints Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Rubenstein, Oliver; Woolford, Amelia; Egan, Jim; Pearce, Bruce.
We report a social science study of farmers’ experience of transition towards agroecological approaches in the UK with the aims to (i) identify motivations, challenges and opportunities encountered, together with the perceived benefits and disadvantages associated with the transition and (ii) gain an understanding of individuals’ trajectories in context, including social, economic, biophysical, cultural and psychological dimensions. Fourteen farmers in England, Scotland and Wales that had undergone an agroecological transition were interviewed in early 2017 using a semi-structured interview case study approach. Answers were analysed, considering mainly two theoretical models of farmers’ decision-making. Key triggers were farmers newly taking over a...

Focus groups of value concepts of producers: National Report UK Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Deane, Joanne.
The Organic Revision project was funded by the EU with the aim of supporting the further development of the EU Regulation 2092/91 on organic production. As part of the project focus groups were run in five European countries on value concepts of organic producers and other stakeholders, during 2004-2005. The project aims to provide an overview of values held among organic stakeholders, and of similarities and differences among the various national and private organic standards. In the UK, three focus groups with producers were carried out, one in England and two in Wales. Two of these groups were with established producers and one group were newly converted producers. A further focus group was held with researchers and professionals from Organic...

Inventory of data collecting and publishing institutions(= Deliverable 2.1 of the OrganicDataNetwork project: Report on data collectors) Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L; Vieweger, Anja; Padel, Susanne.
Despite the continuous growth of the organic market in Europe, in most countries only very basic statistics about this sector exist. Individual country governments collect data which are published nationally and by EUROSTAT (the statistical office of the European Union), on the number of certified organic holdings, organic and in-conversion land areas and livestock numbers. Important market statistics, however, such as the amount of production, consumption, retail sales, international trade and prices at the farm or consumer level are lacking in most European countries. To understand the availability of data on the organic market and to assist in improving data quality and availability, it is first necessary to be aware of the organisations that currently...

In-depth case studies of the conversion process Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. A number of agricultural disciplines including agricultural economics are concerned with farmer decision-making and change processes on farms regarding both technical and financial efficiency through surveys of representative samples and modelling. The paper presents an alternative approach in which longitudinal case studies were used to gain a better understanding of a complex change process on farms, the conversion process to organic milk production. The aim was to develop and apply an integrated approach to analyse both personal and farm-specific changes in a qualitative way and to identify important factors that influence the conversion process.

The European Market for Organic Food Organic Eprints
Richter, Toralf; Padel, Susanne.
Most of the information and statistics presented in this chapter were compiled as part of a survey among national experts of national or international organic markets. Many of these figures are based on estimates, and the methods of data collection vary from country to country as no uniform data collection system for organic market data is yet in place. In addition, national organic sales figures may vary between years depending on the information sources. Descriptions of market trends in this chapter are the result of market observations by Toralf Richter (Bio Plus AG, Switzerland) and Susanne Padel (University of Wales). The authors would welcome any comments that may help to improve the quality of data and information about the organic market in Europe...

Consumer concerns regarding additional ethical attributes of organic food Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich; Freyer, Bernhard; Goesssinger, Katharina; Naspetti, Simona; Padel, Susanne; Stolz, Hanna; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.
In a world where more and more organic products are mass produced, and where most consumers have little – if any – contact with the organic farmers who have produced their food, many people feel that the underlying principles of the organic movement are coming under threat. According to our research consumers are mostly interested in additional ethical attributes like “higher animal welfare standards”, “regional/local production” and “fair producer prices” and they are willing to pay more for organic products which are produced following these higher standards. This gives producers the opportunity to differentiate their products in the organic market. When communicating these additional ethical attributes of organic food producers must take care to use a...

Research for transition: Europeans deserve a better agricultural and food policy Organic Eprints
Barret, Philippe; Marq, Pascal; Mayer, Carolin; Padel, Susanne.
Research is a key element in the exploration of new pathways in farming systems. Organic farming relies on specific methods and a strict regulation. By design, organic farming harmonizes the environmental and productive dimensions of farming systems. The report covers four sections. 1. Funding of organic farming research is low both at EU and national levels, but at the EU and national levels, statistics on the financial support to the different models of agriculture are neither precise nor comprehensive. This lack of transparency impairs any comparative analysis. 2. Several countries have specific programmes for organic farming research The total amounts of money are limited but in most cases the programmes are multi-annual and help to build long-term...
