Subsidence of the gulf of Lions continental margin (France) ArchiMer
Bache, François; Olivet, Jean-louis; Rabineau, Marina; Gorini, C; Baztan, Juan; Aslanian, Daniel.
The Gulf of Lion margin has been created by an Oligo-Aquitanian rifting followed by oceanic accretion in the Provencal basin during the Burdigalian. Two main periods have been detailed in this study. The Messinian event represents a clear marker (between 7 and 5.3 Ma) within the history of the basin. The study of sedimentary geometries on the margin and in the deep basin gave new elements for the understanding of the messinian crisis: • The first element is the identification of a thick detritic series (up to 1000 m) at the transition between the sub aerially eroded shelf and the slope. The base of this series corresponds to the very first event of the Messinian crisis. • The second important element is the identification of a thick stratum of lower...

Neogene evolution and demise of the Amapá carbonate platform, Amazon continental margin, Brazil ArchiMer
Cruz, A.m.; Reis, A.t.; Suc, J.p.; Silva, C.g.; Praeg, D.; Granjeon, D.; Rabineau, Marina; Popescu, S.m.; Gorini, C..
The Amazon continental shelf hosted one of the world's largest mixed carbonate-siliciclastic platforms from the late Paleocene onwards - the Amapá carbonates. The platform architecture, however, remains poorly understood and causes and timing of the cessation of carbonate deposition are still controversial. Here we present a stratigraphic analysis of the Neogene succession of the Amapá carbonates, based on a grid of 2D/3D seismic data correlated to revised micropaleontological data from exploration wells. The results provide improved constraints on the age of the transition from predominantly carbonate to siliciclastic sedimentation, which is shown to have varied through time across three different sectors of the shelf (NW, Central and SE). Four Neogene...

Sedimentological imprint on subseafloor microbial communities in Western Mediterranean Sea Quaternary sediments ArchiMer
Ciobanu, Maria Cristina; Rabineau, Marina; Droz, Laurence; Revillon, Sidonie; Ghiglione, J. -f.; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Kallmeyer, J.; Etoubleau, Joel; Pignet, Patricia; Crassous, Philippe; Vandenabeele-trambouze, Odile; Laugier, J.; Guegan, Matthieu; Godfroy, Anne; Alain, Karine.
An interdisciplinary study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between geological and paleoenvironmental parameters and the bacterial and archaeal community structure of two contrasting subseafloor sites in the Western Mediterranean Sea (Ligurian Sea and Gulf of Lion). Both depositional environments in this area are well-documented from paleoclimatic and paleooceanographic point of views. Available data sets allowed us to calibrate the investigated cores with reference and dated cores previously collected in the same area, and notably correlated to Quaternary climate variations. DNA-based fingerprints showed that the archaeal diversity was composed by one group, Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group (MCG), within the Gulf of Lion sediments and of nine...

The late Messinian event: a worldwide tectonic revolution ArchiMer
Leroux, Estelle; Aslanian, Daniel; Rabineau, Marina; Pellen, Romain; Moulin, Maryline.
A review of geological and geophysical observations points towards a worldwide kinematic change at around 6 Ma. The synchronicity of many manifestations (tectonics, magmatism, kinematics, ecological events, among others) at ~6 Ma, similar to those recognized from time to time on the geological timescale, argues for a global geodynamic event that has led to many regional consequences on Earth's surface. In particular, we propose that this global event was the main trigger for the three fold increase in sediment deposits in the world ocean over the last ~5 Ma, but also for the onset of the Messinian Salinity Crisis in the Mediterranean area, one of the most severe ecological crises in the Earth's history. We suggest this Messinian revolution to be the last...

The Minorca Basin: a buffer zone between the Valencia and Liguro-Provençal Basins (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Pellen, Romain; Aslanian, Daniel; Rabineau, Marina; Leroux, Estelle; Gorini, Christian; Silenziario, Carmine; Blanpied, Christian; Rubino, Jean-loup.
Detailed analyses of seismic profiles and boreholes in the Valencia Basin (VB) reveal a differentiated basin, the Minorca Basin (MB), lying between the old Mesozoic Valencia Basin sensu strico (VBss) and the young Oligocene Liguro-Provençal Basin (LPB). The relationship between these basins is shown through the correlation of four Miocene-to-present-day megasequences. The Central and North Balearic Fracture Zones (CFZ and NBFZ) that border the MB represent two morphological and geodynamical thresholds that created an accommodation in steps between the three domains. Little to no horizontal Neogene movements are found for the Ibiza and Majorca Islands. In contrast, the counterclockwise movement of the Corso-Sardinian blocks induced a counterclockwise...

Slope morphologies offshore Dakhla (SW-Moroccan margin) ArchiMer
Benabdellouahed, Massinissa; Baltzer, Agnes; Rabineau, Marina; Aslanian, Daniel; Sahabi, Mohamed; Germond, Fabien; Loubrieu, Benoit; Biari, Youssef.
This study explores a portion of the West African margin at the junction between two well- known segments offshore Dakhla and offshore Mauritania with destructional architecture characterized by giant slides. In between these two segments, the Dakhla segment has historically been described as a constructional section. During an oceanographic Dakhla cruise (2002), high resolution seismic data, swath bathymetry and imagery were acquired around latitude 23° N, offshore Dakhla,. This new data set reveals the existence of varied and complex morphologies on the continental slope, interpreted as a "shallot-shaped" canyon, seafloor depressions or pockmarks, ridges and scarps. These morphologies are interpreted as clues of sedimentary transfers and rupture...

Paleo sea levels reconsidered from direct observation of paleoshoreline position during Glacial Maxima (for the last 500,000 yr) ArchiMer
Rabineau, Marina; Berne, Serge; Olivet, Jean-louis; Aslanian, Daniel; Guillocheau, François; Joseph, Philippe.
The drastic climatic changes which characterise the cooling trend of the last few million years of Earth history led to variations in eustatic sea level that had tremendous impact on the geology and ecology of continental margins. Reconstructing a sea-level curve back in time is not an easy task. Observations of shoreline positions are always a local measurement of Relative Sea Level that needs to be corrected from the effect of tectonic and thermal subsidence, sediment loading, compaction and glacio-hydro isostasy. Extensive studies have been done for the last deglaciation and for the last 100,000 yr cycle. But very few studies deal with position of sea level during earlier cycles, simply because conditions are very rarely favourable for the preservation...

Facies architecture of Miocene subaqueous clinothems of the New Jersey passive margin: Results from IODP-ICDP Expedition 313 ArchiMer
Proust, Jean-noel; Pouderoux, Hugo; Ando, Hisao; Hesselbo, Stephen P.; Hodgson, David M.; Lofi, Johanna; Rabineau, Marina; Sugarman, Peter J..
Understanding the history, causes, and impact of sea-level changes is a challenge for our societies that face accelerated global sea-level rise. In this context, improvement of our knowledge of sea-level changes and shoreline migration at geological time scales is critical. The preserved, laterally correlative sedimentary record of continental erosion on passive margins has been used to reconstruct past sea level. However, the detailed nature of a basic clinothem progradational pattern observed on many of these margins is still poorly known. This paper describes the sedimentary facies and interprets the depositional environments and the architecture of the clinothems of the New Jersey shelf (offshore northeastern USA) to depict the origin and controls of...

Plio-Quaternary prograding clinoform wedges of the western Gulf of Lion continental margin (NW Mediterranean) after the Messinian Salinity Crisis ArchiMer
Lofi, Johanna; Rabineau, Marina; Gorini, Christian; Berne, Serge; Clauzon, Georges; De Clarens, Philippe; Dos Reis, Tadeu; Mountain, Gregory; Ryan, William; Steckler, Michael; Fouchet, Christine.
In contrast to the much-studied onshore and deep offshore post-Messinian sedimentary history of the Gulf of Lion, the continental shelf had been poorly explored until recently. New seismic data, acquired by ELF Oil Company on the Languedoc-Roussillon shelf (Western Mediterranean Sea), from Cap Creus in the SW to Cap d'Agde in the NE, together with data from previously drilled exploratory wells, allow us to propose a scenario for margin reconstruction following the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The seismic data display a complex pattern of prograding clinoforms and buried submarine canyons. Following the crisis that eroded the previous margin, clinoforms developed as the new Pliocene margin prograded. Three major periods characterize the evolution of the...

Quantifying Biogenic Versus Detrital Carbonates on Marine Shelf: An Isotopic Approach ArchiMer
Pasquier, V.; Revillon, Sidonie; Leroux, Estelle; Molliex, Stephane; Mocochain, L.; Rabineau, Marina.
The terrigenous sedimentary budget of passive margins, records variations in past sedimentary fluxes, and thus can be used to infer past variations of Earth surface deformation processes or climate change. Accurate estimates of sediment fluxes over various times and spatial scales are therefore crucial. Traditionally, offshore sediment volume determination only considers siliciclastic accumulation, the carbonate fraction (i.e., CaCO3) being considered only as in situ production. Here we propose a new geochemical methodology to decipher and quantify the number of detrital carbonates in comparison to in situ produced biogenic carbonates. This isotopic approach enables considering the export of detrital carbonates and investigating its effect on sediment...

Origin of step-like and lobate seafloor features along the continental shelf off Rio de Janeiro State, Santos basin-Brazil ArchiMer
Reis, A. T.; Maia, R. M. C.; Silva, C.g.; Rabineau, Marina; Guerra, J.v.; Gorini, C.; Ayres, A.; Arantes-oliveira, R.; Benabdellouahed, M; Simoes, I.; Tardin, R..
A combined analysis of seismic and morphological features identified in a set of high-resolution seismic reflection and bathymetric data, shows a systematic relationship between major modern seafloor morphological traces and the basinward migration of Late Pleistocene coastlines along the continental shelf of the Santos basin (Rio de Janeiro State, SE Brazil). Observed fairly continuous and sinuous mid-outer shelf escarpments are related to the sea-level variations and shelf exposure during the Last Glacial cycle. A bathymetric step at -110 m is an erosional remnant of offlapping detached forced-regressive wedges that spread over 50 km in the shelf-dip direction, probably developed during periods of falling sea level between MIS 3 and 2. A second major...

High resolution evolution of terrigenous sediment yields in the Provence Basin during the last 6 Ma: relation with climate and tectonics ArchiMer

Basin-wide correlation of Messinian units and Plio-Quaternary chronostratigraphic markers (5.3 Ma, 2.6 Ma, 0.9 Ma and 0.45 Ma), the mapping of total sediment thickness and the determination of overall sedimentary volumes enabled us to provide a high-resolution quantitative history of sediment volumes for the last 6 Ma along the Gulf of Lions margin. The results point to (i) a dramatic increase in terrigenous sediment input during the Messinian Salinity Crisis. This increased sedimentation reflects enhanced regional fluvial erosion related to the dramatic fall of Mediterranean base-level. Stronger weathering due to a regional wetter climate probably also increased erosional fluxes. (ii) A sediment input three times higher during the Plio-Quaternary compared...

Shoreface migrations at the shelf edge and sea-level changes around the Last Glacial Maximum (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Jouet, Gwenael; Berne, Serge; Rabineau, Marina; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Bernier, P.; Dennielou, Bernard; Sierro, F.j.; Flores, J.a.; Taviani, M..
The Bourcart–Hérault canyon interfluve in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) was the site of very high sedimentation (up to 2.5 m/kyr) around the Last Glacial Maximum, due to the vicinity of major fluvial systems that fed the shelf edge. Shoreface deposits and offshore muds deposited during each glacial/interglacial 100 kyr-cycle, created a repeated motif with high-angle and low-angle clinoforms on seismic profiles. New detailed morphological, sedimentological and paleo-environmental data, constrained by 14C dating, allow us to propose a scenario for the evolution of this critical area between 46 and 15 cal. kyr BP. The major seismic sequence (S5), formed as a forced regression during the overall sea-level fall between MIS-3 and MIS-2, can be sub-divided...

Sedimentary sequences in the Gulf of Lion: A record of 100,000 years climatic cycles ArchiMer
Rabineau, Marina; Berne, Serge; Aslanian, Daniel; Olivet, Jean-louis; Joseph, Philippe; Guillocheau, François; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Le Drezen, Eliane; Granjeon, Didier.
The wide continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion (up to 70 km) has been the object of numerous investigations since the early days of oceanography. Yet, the question of sequences duration, the mechanisms of deposition and factors implied remained unanswered. A study of a very dense grid of Very High Resolution (VHR) seismic reflection (Sparker) data associated with surficial cores both, collected by IFREMER between 1992 and 2001 on the outer shelf and upper slope offshore of Sète in the Languedoc region gives a new insight into these issues. Analysis of the 3D geometry of the sedimentary record reveals a basic depositional pattern consisting of a pair of horizontally juxtaposed and downlapping prisms. Prism PI with low angle clinoforms (<1°) lies on the...

Stratigraphic simulations of the shelf of the Gulf of Lions: testing subsidence rates and sea-level curves during the Pliocene and Quaternary ArchiMer
Leroux, Estelle; Rabineau, Marina; Aslanian, Daniel; Granjeon, Didier; Droz, Laurence; Gorini, Christian.
Determining the relative importance of factors interacting to control stratigraphic organization is a key issue in sedimentology. The Pliocene-Quaternary chronostratigraphy on the Gulf of Lions platform is still poorly constrained, giving rise to different interpretations of the evolution of its subsidence through time. This paper examines the Pliocene-Quaternary sedimentary filling of the Gulf of Lion's shelf with Dionisos, a numerical stratigraphic model. Our results show that a constant subsidence rate accurately reproduces the observed geometries, whereas a varying subsidence rate reproduces them only if the acceleration of subsidence is limited. At this time-scale, a third-order eustatic curve is also reappraised: a higher resolution curve (built...

The Gulf of Lions presents recurring mass-transport deposits (MTDs) within the Plio-Quaternary sediments suggesting a long history of mass movements. The two large, surficial MTDs are located on the eastern and western levee of the Rhone canyon over an area exceeding 6000 km2 and volumes exceeding 100 km3. Both MTDs were emplaced 21 ka ago (peak of the Last Glacial Maximum), suggesting a common trigger. Here, we present a multidisciplinary high-resolution geophysical, sedimentological and in-situ geotechnical study of the source and deposit areas of both MTDs to characterise distinct expressions of sediment deformation as well as their spatial and chronological distributions. We show the internal structure of mass movements and resulting MTDs with...

Organic matter isotopes reveal enhanced rainfall activity in Northwestern Mediterranean borderland during warm substages of the last 200 kyr ArchiMer
Pasquier, Virgil; Toucanne, Samuel; Sansjofre, Pierre; Dixit, Yama; Revillon, Sidonie; Mokeddem, Zohra; Rabineau, Marina.
In this study we use bulk sediment organic matter stable isotopes (δ13Corg and δ15N) to examine the nature and timing of preserved organic matter in borehole PRGL1-4 from Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. This region is known as a transitional zone between the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation and the North African monsoon system. In the Gulf of Lion (SE France), increased inputs of organic matter from sediment-laden rivers occurred during warm substages of the last 200 kyr (MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a; MIS 6d, and 6b). Increased terrestrial organic matter are inferred from organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg), and are interpreted as resulting from enhanced rainfall over the Rhone river catchment area. Such increase in terrestrial organic carbon induced...

Evolution of rifted continental margins: The case of the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean Basin) ArchiMer
Bache, Francois; Olivet, Jean-louis; Gorini, Christian; Aslanian, Daniel; Labails, Cinthia; Rabineau, Marina.
The formation of rifted continental margins has long been explained by numerous physical models. However, field observations are still lacking to validate or constrain these models. This study presents major new observations on the broad continental margin of the Gulf of Lions, based on a large amount of varied data. Two contrasting regions characterize the thinned continental crust of this margin. One of these regions corresponds to a narrow rift zone (40–50 km wide) that was highly thinned and stretched during rifting. In contrast with this domain, a large part of the margin subsided slowly during rifting and then rapidly after rifting. The thinning of this domain cannot be explained by stretching of the upper crust. We can thus recognize a zonation of...

The conjugate margins system of the Gulf of Lion and West Sardinia (GLWS) represents a unique natural laboratory for addressing fundamental questions about rifting due to its landlocked situation, its youth, its thick sedimentary layers, including prominent palaeo-marker such as the MSC event, and the amount of available data and multidisciplinary studies. The main goals of the SARDINIA experiment, were to (i) investigate the deep structure of the entire system within the two conjugate margins: the Gulf of Lion and West Sardinia, (ii) characterize the nature of the crust, and (iii) define the geometry of the basin and provide important constrains on its genesis. The Messinian Salinity Crisis is well known to have resulted from a significant drop of the Mediterranean sea level. Considering both onshore and offshore observations, the subsequent reflooding is generally thought to have been very sudden. We present here offshore seismic evidence from the Gulf of Lions and re-visited onshore data from Italy and Turkey that lead to a new concept of a two-step reflooding of the Mediterranean Basin after the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The refilling was first moderate and relatively slow accompanied by transgressive ravinement, and later on very rapid, preserving the subaerial Messinian Erosional Surface. The amplitude of these two successive rises of sea level has been estimated at =500 similar to m for the first rise and...
