Towards a better assessment of the ecological status of coastal waters using satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentrations ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Saulquin, Bertrand; Oger-jeanneret, Helene; Lozac' H, L; Lampert, Luis; Lefebvre, Alain; Riou, Philippe; Bruchon, F.
The application of the new Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union will require a dense and frequent monitoring of chlorophyll-a near the coast. Not counting the transitional water bodies located in the vicinity of estuaries, not less than seventy four coastal water bodies have to be monitored along the coast of the French Atlantic continental shelf and the English Channel. All the available data have to be gathered to implement a comprehensive monitoring scheme. To this purpose, we evaluate the capacity of ocean colour imagery to complete the conventional in situ data set collected in coastal networks. Satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration is obtained by the application of a coastal Look-Up-Table to water-leaving radiance of the...

Microbial impact of small tributaries on water and shellfish quality in shallow coastal areas ArchiMer
Riou, Philippe; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Dumas, Franck; Caprais, Marie-paule; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pommepuy, Monique.
This study aimed to investigate the impact of small tributaries on seawater and shellfish quality in coastal area subjected to brief episodes leading to fecal contamination. Escherichia coli and F-RNA-specific bacteriophages were selected as fecal indicators and astroviruses were chosen as being representative of pathogens in the human population during winter viral epidemics. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was built to simulate the current and dispersion in the model domain, which includes areas uncovered at low tide. The model also includes decay rates to simulate microorganism behavior and assess the influence of fecal input on shellfish quality. The originality lies in the fact that specific features of the study area were considered. Modeling...

Annual Phytoplankton Primary Production Estimation in a Temperate Estuary by Coupling PAM and Carbon Incorporation Methods ArchiMer
Morelle, Jerome; Schapira, Mathilde; Orvain, Francis; Riou, Philippe; Lopez, Pascal Jean; Pierre-duplessix, Olivier; Rabiller, Emilie; Maheux, Frank; Simon, Benjamin; Claquin, Pascal.
Phytoplankton primary production varies considerably with environmental parameters especially in dynamic ecosystems like estuaries. The aim of this study was to investigate short-term primary production along the salinity gradient of a temperate estuary over the course of 1 year. The combination of carbon incorporation and fluorescence methods enabled primary production estimation at short spatial and temporal scales. The electron requirement for carbon fixation was investigated in relation with physical-chemical parameters to accurately estimate primary production at high frequency. These results combined with the variability of the photic layer allowed the annual estimation of primary production along the estuary. Phytoplankton dynamics was closely...

Dynamics of phytoplankton diversity structure and primary productivity in the English Channel ArchiMer
Napoleon, Camille; Fiant, Liliane; Raimbault, Virginie; Riou, Philippe; Claquin, Pascal.
The dynamics of the phytoplankton assemblage, the physical, chemical and biological parameters, and primary productivity and production were monitored in the central English Channel along a transect between Ouistreham and Portsmouth from January to December 2010. The spatial patterns of the phytoplankton assemblage were controlled by the hydrological characteristics of the water masses, and the annual structure of the phytoplankton assemblage was characteristic of the central English Channel and was controlled by seasonality. The spring bloom was dominated by a single species, Chaetoceros socialis, and associated with low microphytoplankton evenness and Shannon-Wiener indices, whereas the evenness index was high from late spring to winter and associated...

Eutrophication modelling chain for improved management strategies to prevent algal blooms in the Bay of Seine ArchiMer
Passy, Paul; Le Gendre, Romain; Garnier, Josette; Cugier, Philippe; Callens, Julie; Paris, Francois; Billen, Gilles; Riou, Philippe; Romero, Estela.
Eutrophication of the Seine estuary and the Bay of the Seine is a crucial environmental issue for the management of ecosystems and economic activities related to fisheries and tourism. A large quantity of nutrients, especially nitrogen, is brought to the coastal zone by the Seine River, the main input of that area, but also by smaller rivers along the Normandy coast. This large delivery of nitrogen leads to an imbalance between nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silica (Si), which affects the growth of planktonic organisms and can exacerbate the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). These events can be damaging for shellfish fisheries, an important economic resource for the region. The study describes a new modelling chain coupling a riverine and a...

Qualité du Milieu Marin Littoral Normand. Départements : Seine Maritime, Eure, Calvados et Manche - Edition 2010 ArchiMer
Riou, Philippe; Etourneau, Claude; Francoise, Sylvaine; Nedelec, Florence; Lamort, Laure; Mary, Charlotte.

The role of models in assessing the impact of sewage overflows on feacal water contamination ArchiMer
Riou, Philippe; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Dumas, Franck; Le Guyader, Soizick; Le Goff, R.; Maheux, Frank; Lamort, Laure; Pommepuy, Monique.
Climate change contributes to local weather modifications such as storm events and heavy rainfall, and in particular, changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme storm and rainfall events. Observations have indicated that rainfall-runoff processes, like sewage overflow may induce fecal contamination in coastal water. Pathogens present in runoff water could therefore contaminate shellfish and be responsible for food-borne disease outbreaks. Mathematical models for this were used to predict the effect of climate modifications on shellfish quality. Using a hydrodynamic model, simulations of water quality conditions under a variety of storm event scenarios were run and are presented here for a harvesting area in France. Major storm events occurring in...

Influence of an aggregate extraction in remobilizing contaminants from sediments in surface waters of the Bay of Seine (France) ArchiMer
Menet-nedelec, Florence; Riou, Philippe; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Maheux, Frank; Pierre-duplessix, Olivier; Rabiller, Emilie; Simon, Benjamin.
In coastal areas where monitoring data show that fine sediments contain contaminants, remobilization of these materials during aggregate extractions, which create a turbidity plume, might influence water quality. The eastern bay of Seine (France) is under the influence of the Seine plume, one of the most contaminated rivers in Europe. This study aimed at investigating remobilization of metals and organics from sediments in surface water during and after an aggregate dredging, through their behavior between total and dissolved phases. In this study area located 20 kilometers off Le Havre, sediments where sampled to identify potential contaminants. Unfiltered and filtered (< 0,2 µm) surface seawater samples were collected at different stages of the...

The King scallop Pecten maximus constitutes the first landed species in terms of tonnage and the second or third one in terms of value for the French fisheries. More than 90% of these landings come from the English Channel indicating that its exploitation is essential to local fleets. The COMANCHE project (Ecosystem Interactions and anthropogenic impacts on King scallops populations in the English Channel) proposed to improve the knowledge of the scallop within the Channel, through an ecosystem-based approach for fisheries, appealing to a wide range of scientific disciplines (physics, chemistry, genetics, ecology, geostatistics, modeling, economics ....). Researches on the spatial location of scallop beds, connectivity by larval dispersal between beds,...
