IMPACTS OF GATT/URUGUAY ROUND TRADE NEGOTIATIONS ON U.S. BEEF AND CATTLE PRICES AgEcon
Brester, Gary W.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
The GATT/Uruguay Round trade negotiations have resulted in a multilateral relaxation of beef trade restrictions. A linear elasticity model of the U.S. beef industry is developed using log differentials equations. Beef consumption, production, and trade are disaggregated into appropriate ground and table cut components. The model predicts that GATT/Uruguay Round will cause asymmetric effects on ground and table cut beef consumers. In general, fed cattle and cow/calf producers will benefit from trade liberalization because of increases in fed and feeder cattle prices. However, nonfed cattle price will decrease.

WHO DETERMINES FARM PROGRAMS? AGRIBUSINESS AND THE MAKING OF FARM POLICY AgEcon
Alston, Julian M.; Carter, Colin A.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
Political-economic analyses of the causes and consequences of agricultural commodity policies typically emphasize farmer and consumer (taxpayer) interests and underplay the role of agribusiness. A more complete understanding of agricultural policy requires paying attention to the important role of agribusiness interests. Policies that benefit farmers (e.g., price supports, supply controls, deficiency payments) may either enhance or reduce agribusiness profits. The type of policy instrument preferred by agribusiness varies among commodities, depending on the technology of the marketing processes beyond the farm gate and the elasticity of final demand. This paper emphasizes the idea that instruments of farm policy are chosen in response to pressures from...

A Censored Demand System Analysis of Fruits and Vegetables by Different Income Groups Using Micro Data AgEcon
Niu, Luyuan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This study examines demand for fruits and vegetables segmented by income levels in a complete demand system framework using the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) from 2002 to 2006. Results show that disparities are found between high-income households and low-income households. Seasonal effects and demographic variables, such as household heads’ race and gender, region, household size and household composition, play an important role in fruit and vegetable consumption for both categories of household. In contrast, urban status, household heads’ educational level and age are not found to have a statistically significant impact for low-income households. Conditional price elasticities indicate that processed fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits and fresh...

The nature of the research‐induced supply shift AgEcon
Wohlgenant, Michael K..
Differences among firms in a competitive industry can affect the shape of the industry supply curve. It is necessary to know how both production costs and rents are affected by research. Industry response to research will be different depending upon whether entry occurs. If the effect of entry is ignored, then the price decline from research will be overstated. Industry marginal returns can be positive with purely yield‐increasing research, even when industry demand is inelastic. Standard formulas for calculating producer surplus based on linear industry supply and demand curves are strictly valid only if the analysis is restricted to short‐run equilibrium behaviour.

Do Economic Restrictions Improve Forecasts? AgEcon
Murphy, Elizabeth A.; Norwood, F. Bailey; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
A previous study showed that imposing economic restrictions improves the forecasting ability of food demand systems, thus warranting their use even when rejected in-sample. This study attempts to determine whether this is due solely to the fact that restrictions improve degrees of freedom. Results indicate that restrictions improve forecasting ability even when not derived from economic theory, but theoretical restrictions forecast best.

Assessment of Import Restrictions on the U.S. Meat and Livestock Markets: An Application to the Case of Discovery of BSE on Canadian Cattle AgEcon
Boonsaeng, Tullaya; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the discovery of BSE in Canadian cattle on the imported and domestic demand for livestock and meat in the United States. A multi-market partial equilibrium model is utilized to simulate the effects of policy-induced shifts in quantities of imports supplied from Canada on the meat and livestock industries. Our simulation results predict small effects on cattle.

ESTIMATING CROSS ELASTICITIES OF DEMAND FOR BEEF AgEcon
Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This paper examines the extent to which observed changes in per capita beef consumption can be accounted for by changes in relative prices and per capita real income. Particular attention was given to specifying the functional form by focusing on the nature of demand shifts over time. These considerations led to selection of the Fourier flexible form with a Fourier series expansion in relative meat prices. The results support the hypothesis that recent shifts in demand for beef can be attributed to changes in relative prices of competing meats, especially poultry.

EFFECTS OF AN EXPORT SUBSIDY ON THE U.S. COTTON INDUSTRY AgEcon
Duffy, Patricia A.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
In this study, the effects of an export subsidy for cotton are analyzed using a linear elasticity model. The study explicitly addresses the interaction of current domestic policies with the proposed export subsidy. An export subsidy may be a successful method of reducing the government costs of the cotton program.

DEMAND FOR PLANTS SOLD IN NORTH CAROLINA GARDEN CENTERS AgEcon
Abdelmagid, Banaga D.; Wohlgenant, Michael K.; Safley, Charles D..
Demand for selected nursery plants sold in North Carolina (i.e., begonia, dianthus, geranium, impatiens, marigold, petunia, and vinca) was found to be affected more by prices than by income, demographic, and other variables. By using cross-sectional data, a modified AIDS model, incorporating demographic variables and quadratic income response, was estimated. Inverse Mills's ratios were also included in the model to correct for selectivity bias, resulting from zero purchases. Significant own-price elasticities ranged from -0.71 to -1.65, and income elasticities ranged from -0.78 to 0.41.

Food Safety and Habits in U.S. Meat Demand under Rational Expectations AgEcon
Zhen, Chen; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
A consumer life-cycle demand system is built to investigate the presence of rational habits and the effects of food safety information on U.S. meat consumption. Information extracted from the popular press coverage of food safety events is used to approximate consumers' "true" perception of food safety. At quarterly frequencies, U.S. meat demand is found to be intertemporally nonseparable. During the post-1998 period, habit persistence is found to dominate inventory adjustment in beef demand. In general, food safety information is found to adversely affect meat demand. The ongoing research focuses on numerical simulations of consumer responses to alternative food safety event scenarios to evaluate the economic significance of food safety information and...

The Demand for Livestock by the U.S. Meat Processing Industry AgEcon
Boonsaeng, Tullaya; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This paper studies the demand of domestic and imported livestock by the U.S. meat processing industry. Two types of meats are analyzed: slaughter cattle and hogs. Static and dynamic inverse input demand models are estimated. The static inversed input demand model performed better than the dynamic inversed input demand models. Calculated own price elasticities (flexibilities) and cross price elasticities (flexibilities) indicate that the demand for imported livestock by the meat processing industry is very sensitive to the change in the domestic price for livestock. The demand of domestic slaughter livestock is less sensitive to the change in imported livestock prices.

Household Level Welfare Effect of Organic Milk Introduction AgEcon
Choi, Hee Jung; Wohlgenant, Michael K.; Zheng, Xiaoyong.
This study analyzes the factors that determine the demand for milk products and the consumer benefits from organic milk introduction. Estimating a structural model, the welfare effect is decomposed into two parts: the effect of having an additional product and the effect from the price changes in existing products due to the enhanced competition. In order to take heterogeneous tastes for different product characteristics into account, the unit of analysis is defined at the Universal Product Code (UPC) level and the demand is estimated for each household. The estimates from mixed logit demand approach indicate that households with younger head, higher income or higher education value more for the organic attribute. The distribution of estimated variety...

REGIONAL COTTON ACREAGE RESPONSE AgEcon
Duffy, Patricia A.; Richardson, James W.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
An econometric model of cotton acreage response was estimated for four distinct production regions in the United States. This work builds on previous work in the area of supply response under government farm programs and provides up-to-date regionalized estimates of own-price elasticity of cotton acreage supply. The own-price variable used in this study is a weighted combination of expected market price and government policy variables. Results indicate regional similarity in response to own price but differences with respect to the prices of alternative enterprises. Differences in regional response to paid diversion are also indicated.

Alcoholic Beverages and Cigarettes: Complements or Substitutes? A Pseudo Panel Approach AgEcon
Koksal, Aycan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
In this paper, using pseudo panel data we analyze the relation between cigarette and alcoholic beverage consumption within the rational addiction framework. We believe that pseudo panel data approach has many advantages compared to aggregate and panel data models. We found that alcoholic beverages are complements for cigarettes, while it is not the same the other way around. Moreover, we found that alcohol is a gateway for cigarette which further supports our conclusion concerning the reinforcing effect of alcohol consumption on cigarette consumption. We believe that drinking works as a trigger for smoking especially in social settings like bars while it is also possible (although less likely) that people who want to cut cigarette consumption might...

How do Smoking Bans in Bars/Restaurants Affect Alcohol Consumption? AgEcon
Koksal, Aycan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
In this study, we employ a rational addiction framework to analyze the effects of smoking bans on alcohol consumption in bars/restaurants. We use pseudo panel data approach which has many advantages compared to panel data. Although cigarettes and alcohol are complements in consumption, our findings suggest that smoking bans in restaurants do not have a significant effect on the restaurant alcohol consumption. It is possible that smoking bans at restaurants cause a decrease in the restaurant alcohol consumption of smokers, but lead to an increase in the restaurant alcohol consumption of nonsmokers. If this is the case, the net effect of smoking bans on overall restaurant alcohol consumption would be zero. These results are just preliminary, and further...

MODELING THE FARM-RETAIL PRICE SPREAD FOR BEEF AgEcon
Wohlgenant, Michael K.; Mullen, John D..
A new model for the farm-retail price spread, which accounts for both farm supply and retail demand changes, is introduced. This model is applied to beef, and its empirical performance relative to the markup pricing formulation is evaluated using nonnested testing procedures. The results are consistent with theory and indicate the markup pricing model is misspecified.
