Geographical distribution of challenging weed species - Current knowledge in organic arable farming in the Baltic sea region Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Krawczyk, Roman; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, Livija; Salonen, Jukka; Gerowitt, Bärbel.
They create a great source of agro biodiversity, generating habitats and food sources for other organisms; yet weeds have always posed the greatest challenge in Organic Agriculture from the perspective of production. Because of the specific agricultural management of this farming system, several groups of weed species have naturally adjusted. These can be highly competitive to the crop, acquire high inputs to remove and/or spread rapidly. In this leaflet we will describe the most challenging weed species in organic spring sown cereals in the geographical area of the Baltic sea, based on existing literature and information provided by extension services. We will show and discuss their distribution from country to country and propose a classification...

Crop diversity - a crucial remedy for weed management in organic cropping Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Zarina, Livija; Melander, Bo.
A wide variety of crop species in crop rotations has turned out an essential means to obtain diversification in organic cropping systems. Moreover, the potential of cover crops to assist the main crop in weed suppression has been studied in Denmark, Finland and Latvia. Long-term field experiments in Denmark and Latvia demonstrated that crops with different life cycles and life spans in crop sequence resulted in a relatively low and manageable pressure of annual weeds. The study was part of the PRODIVA project (Core Organic Plus) in which crop diversification for better weed management has been studied and presented in the 18th EWRS Symposium.

Crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems. Introduction to the study of international research-network on diversification and weed management: PRODIVA. Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Gerowitt, Bärbel; Krawczyk, Roman; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, Livija; Melander, Bo.
The international research network PRODIVA aims to improved utilization of crop diversification for weed management in northern European organic arable cropping systems. The over-all aim is to support organic agriculture for the exploitation of crop diversification methods to improve weed management and still maintain a diverse weed flora. Hypothesized is that crop diversification can improve weed management while ensuring a diverse weed flora by the employment of: (I) pertinent crop sequencing that mitigates noxious weed species (II) improved cover crop establishment with selected competitive cover crop species (III) crop mixtures utilizing the resources better than sole crop species resulting in more weed suppression (IV) variety mixtures exerting a...

Mixtures of varieties of spring cereals for weed suppression in organic crop production Organic Eprints
Zarina, Livija; Kaczmarek, Sylvia; Melander, Bo.
The suppression of weeds exerted by the crop plays a significant role for weed management in organic crop production. Crop species have different competitive abilities against weeds but also crop varieties vary in their suppression of weeds. Previous studies with varieties of spring cereals have demonstrated marked differences in the suppression of weeds caused by different attributes, such as stem height and leaf area index. However, little is known when different varieties of the same cereal species are mixed in different compositions both in terms of the number of varieties included and the seed rates at which they are established. Some studies have focused on yield and disease aspects but this study aimed to identify and select blends of cultivars of...

Effect of crop rotation on soil nutrient balance and weediness in soddy podzolic organic farming fields Organic Eprints
Zarina, Livija; Zarina, Liga.
The nutrient balance in different crop rotations under organic cropping system has been investigated in Latvia at the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics since 2006. Latvia is located in a humid and moderate climatic region where the rainfall exceeds evaporation (soil moisture coefficient > 1) and the soil moisture regime is characteristic with percolation. The average annual precipitation is 670-850 mm. The average temperature varies from -6.7 ◦ C in January to 16.5 ◦ C in July. The growing season is 175 - 185 days. The most widespread are podzolic soils and mainly they are present in agricultural fields in all regions of Latvia. In a wider sense the goal of the soil management in organic farming is a creation of the biologically active...

Cover crops in cereals – better companions than weeds? Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Zarina, Livija; Melander, Bo.
Cover crops have gained popularity in cereal cropping now that they are one of the subsidized options in agri-environmental schemes of the EU. Several studies on cover/catch crops affecting nutrient leaching have been published but less information is available concerning their applicability for weed management. In our opinion, combinations of crop and cover crop types as well as crop sequencing conform IPM principles and optimize weed management. The PRODIVA project (ERA-Net Core Organic Plus Action, www.coreorganicplus.org) aims at identifying weed community associations with most common crop types in organic crop production systems. We will clarify the characteristics and relative competitiveness of cover crops providing strong weed suppression without...

The arable vegetation of Baltic organic cereal fields as shaped by crop management Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, Livija; Gerowitt, Bärbel.
Weeds remain to be the main challenge within this agricultural system, especially perennials in the north European realm. Because of increased interest in agrobiodiversity functioning, weeds should be kept within manageable limits, while on the other side encourage a specie rich weed flora. One of the PRODIVA project objectives is to investigate to which extent these two aspects can be addressed through the use of diversified crop management. In order to research this objective, weed and management data were obtained from organic farms in the baltic region over the course of two years (2015-2016) in spring sown cereal crops. The impact of the local environment and management factors on the occurring weed communities was studied in multivariate analysis...

Spring cereal variety mixtures and their relevance for weed suppression in agroecological conditions of Latvia Organic Eprints
Piliksere, Dace; Zarina, Livija.
Good weed suppression ability is required characteristic for crops grown in organic conditions. Some authors report that crop variety mixtures can be more effective in weed suppression than the varieties in pure sowings (DidonandRodriguez,2006). Some other studies show that variety mixtures do not suppress weeds better than their pure components(Kautetal.,2008). The aim of the present study was to evaluate spring cereal(barleyandoat)variety mixtures for their weed suppression ability in agroecological conditions of Latvia. This report includes some results from the ERA-NET CoreOrganicPLUS project “Crop Diversification and Weeds(PRODIVA)”.

Diversification of crop sequences (WP 1): Perennial weed species can be managed when cover crops / green manure crops are included in the crop sequence but interventions must be species dependent, e.g. Elytrigia repens can be promoted by green manures because they prevent post-harvest cultivations. Cirsium arvense and Sonchus arvensis are two perennials that can be controlled by full-season grass-clover subjected to regular mowing for green manuring purposes and this measure has immediate application. Cover crops for diversification (WP 1):  Fast growing cover crops producing copious biomasses are generally useful for the suppression of weeds but need to be abandoned when severe infestations of Elytrigia repens require post-harvest cultivations for...

Within the ERA-net CORE Organic Plus transnational programmes supported project PRODIVA producing of the information required for a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems was started. To fulfill the goal of this project- not to eradicate weed problems, which is unlikely to happen in any arable farming system, but to maintain a diversified and manageable weed flora that can support beneficial organisms- there were data from ongoing long-termed cropping system experiments from Latvia analyzed. It is hypothesised that: a) perennial weeds can be suppressed in the post-harvest period by improved cover crop establishment and pertinent selection of cover crop species; b) on-farm...
