They create a great source of agro biodiversity, generating habitats and food sources for other organisms; yet weeds have always posed the greatest challenge in Organic Agriculture from the perspective of production. Because of the specific agricultural management of this farming system, several groups of weed species have naturally adjusted. The research-network PRODIVA focuses on a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European arable cropping systems. The goal is to maintain diverse arable weed vegetation that is manageable in the long-term and could fulfil other necessary system-functions including support of beneficial organisms. The partners in PRODIVA will synthesize knowledge from terminated and running research projects and set-up selected new experiments on cover crops and variety resp. crop mixtures. The suppression of weeds exerted by the crop plays a significant role for weed management in organic crop production. Crop species have different competitive abilities against weeds but also crop varieties vary in their suppression of weeds. The nutrient balance in different crop rotations under organic cropping system has been investigated in Latvia at the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics since 2006. Latvia is located in a humid and moderate climatic region where the rainfall exceeds evaporation (soil moisture coefficient > 1) and the soil moisture regime is characteristic with percolation. The average annual precipitation is 670-850 mm. The average temperature varies from -6.7 ◦ C in January to 16.5 ◦ C in July. The growing season is 175 - 185 days. Cover crops have gained popularity in cereal cropping now that they are one of the subsidized options in agri-environmental schemes of the EU. Weeds remain to be the main challenge within this agricultural system, especially perennials in the north European realm. Because of increased interest in agrobiodiversity functioning, weeds should be kept within manageable limits, while on the other side encourage a specie rich weed flora. Good weed suppression ability is required characteristic for crops grown in organic conditions. Some authors report that crop variety mixtures can be more effective in weed suppression than the varieties in pure sowings (DidonandRodriguez,2006). Some other studies show that variety mixtures do not suppress weeds better than their pure components(Kautetal.,2008). The aim of the present study was to evaluate spring cereal(barleyandoat)variety mixtures for their weed suppression ability in agroecological conditions of Latvia.
