Thanks to the courtesy of Drs. Boschma and Brongersma the author has been privileged to examine a large series of West African amphibians from the collections of the Royal Museum of Natural History in Leiden. Of the comparatively easily accessible parts of Africa, Liberia is probably the least known, in so far as its herpetological fauna is concerned, and consequently it is not surprising to find that the present material contains much of interest. The following notes concern some of the more obvious points which arise out of the material examined and do not purport to be in any way exhaustive. The author is indebted not only to the gentlemen already mentioned, but also to M. Angel and Mr. Loveridge who have most generously placed at his disposal material... |

Amphibian diversity and distribution patterns in Sinaloa state (north-western Mexico) were assessed from the Global Amphibian Assessment database (GAA-2010). A geographic information system (GIS) was used to evaluate diversity based on distribution maps of 41 species, associated with environmental data. The highest α and γ-diversities were identified in the south-eastern portion of the state, in mountain zones with a warm sub-humid climate, whereas the greatest β-diversity (multiplicative formulation) was aggregated in patches in the western portion of the state in mountains with temperate climates. A cluster analysis and Mantel test showed a strong association of Sorensen’s dissimilarity (additive formulation of β-diversity) with climate and soil moisture... |

In the present paper three new species of the genus Adelophryne from the coastal Atlantic forest in Brazil are described. The species are separated from the two species formerly known from the Amazon forest by caatinga vegetation and a distance of at least 1600 km. A. pachydactylus from Bahia has a reduced number of phalanges in the fourth finger, and large subdigital pads under fingers and toes. A. baturitensis has distinct subarticular tubercles under the toes and a relatively large size. A. maranguapensis has large discs on fingers and toes and is boldly patterned. During fieldwork in Amapá two specimens of A. gutturosa were collected and based on them additional data are provided and some concepts from the original description are revised. Literature... |

During field work in Venezuela and Brazil a difference in call was noticed between specimens of large hylids of the Hyla boans-group. Based on this and on morphological differences, it was concluded that Hyla wavrini Parker, 1936, up till now considered a synonym of Hyla boans (Linnaeus, 1758), should be considered a valid species, of which Hyla miranda-ribeiri Melin, 1941 is a synonym. |

The taxonomic status of the colubrid snake Dendrelaphis tristis (Daudin, 1803) was investigated on the basis of morphological data taken from 64 museum specimens. Univariate and multivariate analyses of these data reveal that Dendrelaphis tristis is composed of two species. One of these species agrees with the description of Dipsas schokari Kuhl, 1820 which is revalidated in the combination Dendrelaphis schokari (Kuhl, 1820). The syntypes of D. schokari have been lost and a type for D. tristis has never been deposited in a collection. Neotypes are designated and described for both species in order to stabilize the names. D. schokari differs from D. tristis in having a lower number of ventrals and subcaudals, a larger eye, a shorter vertebral stripe and the... |

The spectral transmittance of the optical media of the eye plays a substantial role in tuning the spectrum of light available for capture by the retina. Certain squamate reptiles, including snakes and most geckos, shield their eyes beneath a layer of transparent, cornified skin called the ‘spectacle’. This spectacle offers an added opportunity compared with eyelidded animals for tayloring the spectrum. In particular, the hard scale that covers the surface of the spectacle provides a unique material, keratin, rarely found in vertebrate eyes, a material which may have unique spectral properties. To verify this, shed snake and gecko skins were collected and the spectral transmittance of spectacle scales was spectrophotometrically analyzed. The spectacle scale... |

The power of phylogeographic inference resides in its ability to integrate information from multiple sources in an iterative hypothesis-testing framework. In this paper, we build upon previous mtDNA-based hypotheses about the evolutionary history of the Iberian newt Lissotriton boscai using sequences of the highly variable nuclear β-fibrinogen intron 7. In addition to the nuclear sequences, we produced new mtDNA data across the species range to delineate contact zones and test the congruence between nuclear and mitochondrial datasets at the same level of spatial organization. Through a combination of phylogenetic, phylogeographic continuous diffusion, and genetic landscape modelling analyses, we infer the evolutionary history of the species. We found... |

A new species of toad, related with Bufo calamita Laurenti and B. viridis Laurenti, is described from the southern part of Morocco. Combining the data of the available specimens with literature records it was established that the new species probably ranges from the Sous valley southwards to Cape Bojador in the Spanish Sahara. The species seems to be restricted to semi-arid habitats. Tadpoles which probably belong to this species are described. Keys for the identification of adult toads and for the tadpoles are given. |

Oman material of four lizard species is described and discussed ; it comprises specimens of a previously undescribed gecko, Phyllodactylus gallagheri, two lacertids — the poorly known Lacerta jayakari Boulenger, 1887, and L. cyanura, also described here for the first time, and a skink, Ablepharus pannonicus Lichtenstein, 1823. These species have no strong affinities with any members of the mainly Saharo-Sindian fauna now occupying much of Arabia but are closely related to forms occurring to the north of the peninsula. It is probable that they are relicts of a more temperate fauna which once entered more extensively into southeastern Arabia. As might be expected, all four species are absent from the desert areas of Oman and are confined to the disjunct... |

We analysed patterns of skull size and shape variation among populations of the Common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) in the Central Balkans, particularly the effecs of insularity and the presence of the ecologically similar lacertid lizard species P. melisellensis. Two components of shape variation were analysed – size dependent (allometric) and size independent shape changes. The observed shape differentiation relating to insularity was greatly size-dependent and concordant to allometric shape changes which explained over 20% of variation in the skull shape in the analysed sample. The explorative analysis of size-independent shape changes revealed that populations of P. muralis which share habitat with P. melisellensis diverge from populations which do... |

The present note deals with two varanid vertebrae from Pleistocene gravel deposits at Raebia in the Atambua area of Indonesian Timor. The specimens were collected in 1966 by Dr. Th. Verhoeven, who gave them to me for study. Other fossil vertebrate remains from the same site belong to a giant land tortoise, Geochelone atlas (Falconer & Cautley) also known from the Pleistocene of India, Java and the Celebes (Hooijer, 1971), and Stegodon timorensis Sartono, a pygmy proboscidean comparable to those of the Pleistocene of the Celebes and Flores (Hooijer, 1972). No further remains of the varanid have been discovered, and the vertebrae may here be placed on record. There are a thoracic vertebra, with the neural spine broken off and the condyle as well as the... |

Of the genus Scincella Mittleman, 1950 (sensu Greer, 1974) 337 specimens from Asia were examined for 74 characters, which were treated in a numerical-taxonomic way. The dendrogram resulting from this analysis was not stringently adhered to. Because of the wide variation in certain numerical scale characters within one taxon or even within one population, these characters (used by many authors as key characters to separate taxa) are not regarded as very important. For sympatric and parapatric species other characters, including relative size of head, body and limbs, are regarded as very important, because these characters are influenced by the way of life (niche separation). For the separation of allopatric species scale-numbers, but many other characters... |

The respiratory organs of snakes show a great diversity according to genera and species. In the Boidae (two genera excepted; cf. Brongersma, 1951 a and 1951 b), and in Xenopeltis unicolor (Reinw.) both lungs are well developed, although the left is shorter than the right (Butler, 1895). The difference in length between the right and the left lung is not the same in all genera and species, but it also shows individual variations within the species. In the Anilidae the left lung has undergone further reduction than in the Boidae; in Cylindrophis rufus (Laur.) the left lung is still rather well developed, its length is 12% of that of the right lung; in Anilius scytale (L.) the left lung is rudimentary, its length being only 3.5% of that of the right lung; in... |
