White mold detection in common beans through leaf reflectance spectroscopy REA
Machado,Marley L.; Pinto,Francisco de A. C.; Paula Junior,Trazilbo J. de; Queiroz,Daniel M. de; Cerqueira,Ozires de A. T..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to identify wavelengths based on leaf reflectance (400-1050 nm) to estimate white mold severity in common beans at different seasons. Two experiments were carried out, one during fall and another in winter. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression was used to establish a set of wavelengths that better estimates the disease severity at a specific date. Therefore, observations were previously divided in two sub-groups. The first one (calibration) was used for model building and the second subgroup for model testing. Error measurements and correlation between measured and predicted values of disease severity index were employed to provide the best wavelengths in both seasons. The average indexes of each experiment were of 5.8% and...

SeaWiFS. IBSS Repository

Elementos minerais em forrageiras: formas químicas, distribuição e biodisponibilidade. Infoteca-e
NICODEMO, M. L. F.; LAURA, V. A..

Impact on non target organisms of anti-marine wood-borer treatments. Evaluation of stress imposed by treatments on organisms from test sites ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gras, Paul; Adessi, L..
In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two...

Dietary neutral lipid level and source in marine fish larvae: Effects on digestive physiology and food intake ArchiMer
Morais, Sofia; Conceicao, L; Ronnestad, I; Koven, W; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Dinis, M.
A growth depressing effect of high dietary neutral lipid levels in marine fish larvae has been reported. This may be a result of a decrease in the efficiency or activity of digestive enzymes, a reduction in absorption efficiency and/or a decrease in food intake. The present work reviews recent studies carried out on commercially valuable species (Atlantic herring, Senegalese sole, European seabass and gilthead seabream) that investigated the effects of neutral lipid level and lipid source (fatty acid composition) on some of these key factors influencing larval growth. The results seem to collectively indicate that lipid transport from the enterocytes into the body may be more problematic in larval stages dealing with high neutral lipid diets than lipolytic...

High-Resolution Geoacoustic Characterization of the Seafloor Using a Subbottom Profiler in the Gulf of Lion ArchiMer
Theuillon, Gwladys; Stephan, Yann; Pacault, Anne.
Subbottom profilers are commonly used to explore the first sediment layers below the seafloor. Recent narrowbeam profilers achieve improved performances in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and resolution. Thus, the potential of these systems for near real-time geoacoustic characterization of sediments is high and is worth being specifically explored. This paper presents several methods to estimate geoacoustic parameters such as the absorption, the reflectivity, and the impedance contrast. These procedures are tested against real data collected with the SBP 120 subbottom profiler during the CALIbration MEthodology for Recognition of the Ocean bottom (CALIMERO) experiment. It is shown that the absorption and impedance contrast estimates are fully...

Impact on non target organisms of anti-marine wood-borer treatments. Evaluation of stress imposed by treatments on organisms form test sites - Final Report ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Adessi, L.; Gras, Paul.
Experiments were canied out to assess the copper-chrome-arsenic (CCA) trealment effeets on the Blue mussel Mytilus edulis physiology. Experimental design included two complementary approaches: 1) scope for growth esrimates based upon the energy balance between respiration energy loss and energy gained from feeding processes. 2) a biological early waming system for valve behavior monitoring under CCA exposures. Various temperature range (seasonal effeet). physiological status (mature & immature mussels) as weil as CCA concentrations (from 0 to 48kg/m3) and rime exposure were tested. Significant monality rates for the experimental mussel populations were recorded in alI experimental modalities but the 2kg/m3 CCA treatment concentration. Overall results...

Description of the unusual digestive tract of Platax orbicularis and the potential impact of Tenacibaculum maritimum infection ArchiMer
Alix, Maud; Gasset, Eric; Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Noel, Jean; Pirot, Nelly; Perez, Valérie; Coves, Denis; Saulnier, Denis; Lignot, Jehan-hervé; Cucchi, Patricia N..
Background Ephippidae fish are characterized by a discoid shape with a very small visceral cavity. Among them Platax orbicularis has a high economic potential due to its flesh quality and flesh to carcass ratio. Nonetheless, the development of its aquaculture is limited by high mortality rates, especially due to Tenacibaculum maritimum infection, occurring one to three weeks after the transfer of fishes from bio-secure land-based aquaculture system to the lagoon cages for growth. Among the lines of defense against this microbial infection, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is less studied. The knowledge about the morphofunctional anatomy of this organ in P. orbicularis is still scarce. Therefore, the aims of this study are to characterize the GIT in...

Maguer, Jf; L'Helguen, S; Madec, C; Le Corre, P.
Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were measured in spring and summer in deep and shallow well-mixed waters of the English Channel during different cruises between 1986 and 1994. In the deep waters, nitrate uptake was relatively low during phytoplankton development and ammonium uptake represented more than 70 % of the total uptake irrespective of the season. In the shallow waters, nitrate uptake during spring phytoplankton growth was high and represented about 75 % of the total uptake. Ammonium uptake became substantial towards the end of spring and summer. The high contribution of ammonium to the nitrogenous nutrition of phytoplankton over the whole of the well-mixed waters is related to a high rate of recycling of nitrogen in the water column. Ammonium...

The selection of an ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part B) ArchiMer
Gonzalez-araya, Ricardo; Lebrun, Luc; Quere, Claudie; Robert, Rene.
Four microalgae species (Rhodomonas salina, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira pseudonana and Pavlova lutheri) were evaluated to estimate their potential as food for Ostrea edulis (L.) reproductive conditioning. Best ingestion and absorption were observed with R. salina (3.44 and 1.59 mg g− 1 h− 1, respectively), followed by T. pseudonana (2.75 and 0.98 mg g− 1 h− 1) and P. lutheri (2.40 and 0.91 mg g− 1 h− 1). Oysters fed T. weissflogii exhibited the lowest ingestion and absorption values (1.40 and 0.68 mg g− 1 h− 1). Proximate composition (proteins and carbohydrates) and lipid content (fatty acids and sterols) analysed in four main tissues (gonad, digestive gland, muscle and gills) also differed significantly with diet. Protein ranged from 355 mg...

Combined oral toxicity of azaspiracid-1 and yessotoxin in female NMRI mice ArchiMer
Aasen, John A. B.; Espenes, Arild; Miles, Christopher O.; Samdal, Ingunn A.; Hess, Philipp; Aune, Tore.
For many years, the presence of yessotoxins (YTXs) in shellfish has contributed to the outcome of the traditional mouse bioassay and has on many occasions caused closure of shellfisheries. Since YTXs do not appear to cause diarrhoea in man and exert low oral toxicity in animal experiments, it has been suggested that they should be removed from regulation. Before doing so, it is important to determine whether the oral toxicity of YTXs is enhanced when present together with shellfish toxins known to cause damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, mice were given high doses of YTX, at 1 or 5 mg/kg body weight, either alone or together with azaspiracid-1 (AZA1) at 200 μg/kg. The latter has been shown to induce damage to the small intestine at this...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. Male and female oysters had similar physiological responses. The filtration rate ranged from 2.4 to 2.6 1.h(-1) at the early stages of maturation and decreased to 1.8 1.h.' during the maturity stage. Growth rate resulting from gonad...

A physiological and biochemical approach to selecting the ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part A) ArchiMer
Gonzalez-araya, Ricardo; Queau, Isabelle; Quere, Claudie; Moal, Jeanne; Robert, Rene.
To select the best microalgae for Ostrea edulis conditioning, four single species diets were fed to batches of broodstock, which were then compared using physiological and biochemical approaches. Ingestion and absorption were first studied, showing that Chaetoceros gracilis and Skeletonema marinoï were efficiently ingested (4.9–5.3 mg g−1 h−1) and absorbed (1.9–2.5 mg g−1 h−1) while Tetraselmis suecica led to the lowest physiological responses (0.36 and 0.12 mg g−1 h−1 respectively). When O. edulis were fed any microalgae except T-ISO with only 79 mg g−1, gonads accumulated carbohydrates from 116 to 141 mg g−1 and the extent of accumulation depended on the species supplied in the order T. suecica<C. gracilis<S. marinoï. Morphology and Histology of the Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) Digestive Tract International Journal of Morphology
Rodrigues,Ana Paula Oeda; Cargnin-Ferreira,Eduardo.
The present study describes the morphology and histology of the digestive tract of juvenile pirarucu, which is a Neotropical fish species with great potential for aquaculture in the Amazon region. Three size classes of pirarucu juveniles from commercial fish farms were sampled for histological examination of the oesophagus, stomach, pyloric caeca, intestine and liver. The morphological and histological features of the pirarucu digestive tract are similar to other carnivorous teleosts and enable the species to ingest, store and digest large food items. Acidic and neutral mucins are secreted by the mucosa of the oesophagus, stomach, pyloric caeca and intestine to protect the mucosal epithelium and to lubricate and facilitate food passage along the digestive...
