Batch anaerobic digestion of banana waste - energy potential and modelling of methane production kinetics CIGR Journal
Khan, Muhammad Tahir; Brulé, Mathieu; Maurer, Claudia; Argyropoulos, Dimitrios; Müller, Joachim; Oechsner, Hans.
Different fractions of banana (stalk, peel, and flesh) as well as the whole unpeeled banana were studied in a laboratory Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) assay. After completion of 35-day digestion at 37°C in 2L-reactors, specific methane yields reached 0.256, 0.322, 0.367 and 0.349 m³/kg VS (volatile solids) for stalk, peel, flesh, and unpeeled banana respectively. Considering the country of Uganda, East Africa, the collection of peels and stalks from banana production would yield a theoretical potential of about 60 GWh of electrical energy per year in biogas plants. In order to verify the suitability of banana fractions to the biogas process, their chemical composition was analyzed, and their methane production kinetics was estimated with exponential...

Novel system for demand-oriented biogas production from sugar beet silage effluent CIGR Journal
Kumanowska, Elzbieta.
In recent years, the concept of flexible electricity production from renewable energy sources has gained popularity in the field of renewable energy supply. This study investigated a new system for flexible biogas production in praxis scale biogas plants involving new sugar beet storage processes aiming on the use of produced sugar beet silage effluent. Both processes showed successful ensiling with moderate losses compared to conventional sugar beet storage processes. A clear advantage was found in the use of washed and chopped sugar beet for silage effluent production. Thanks to the high COD-content and high digestibility, the produced silage effluent was applicable for point feeding. The system’s response, observed as an increase in gas production, was...

Characterization of brewery waste water and evaluation of its potential for biogas production CIGR Journal
Murunga, Sylvia Injete; Mbuge, Duncan Onyango; Gitau, Ayub Njoroge; Mutwiwa, Urbanus Ndungwa; Wekesa, Ingrid Namae.
The issue of global warming and climate change is strongly receiving public attention and has become a major environmental concern both nationally and internationally. Brewing industries are among the largest consumers of water and the largest source of organic effluent mostly from the brewing, cleaning, and cooling processes which must be treated to allowable levels to reduce environmental pollution. Close to 10 L water is used for every 1 L beer that is brewed, though the amount of water in the final beer is small. A study was undertaken to characterize and assess the variations in the quality of untreated brewery waste water. Samples from different process streams including brewing line, clean in place line and mixing line from two brewing industries in...

Effects of full-scale substrate pretreatment with a cross-flow grinder on biogas production CIGR Journal
Mönch-Tegeder, Matthias; Lemmer, Andreas; Jungbluth, Thomas; Oechsner, Hans.
The enhancement of the degradation rate of energy crops, agricultural residues and manure by different lab scale pretreatment pathways is shown in previous studies.  In general, the pretreatments resulted in higher degradation efficiencies and an increase in methane yield for lignocellulosic and fibrous biomass.  The major drawback of most of the different pretreatment methods is that either they are not feasible for application in practice or the high energy demand makes them economically inefficient.  The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a full-scale mechanical pretreatment with a cross-flow grinder on commonly used energy crops (maize silage, grass silage and rye grain silage) and horse manure. Furthermore, the optimal treatment...

Experimental evaluation of substrate’s particle size of wheat and rice straw biomass on methane production yield CIGR Journal
Chandra, Ram; Takeuchi, H.; Hasegawa, T.; Vijay, V. K..
This paper examines the effect of particle sizes in substrates on methane production yields of wheat and rice straw biomass without any other applied pretreatment. Anaerobic digestion of three different mean particle size (MPS) substrate of 1.5 mm, 0.75 mm, and 0.30 mm of wheat and rice straw biomass was carried out at 37 oC mesophilic temperature. The observed result revealed that mean particle size of 0.30 mm, and 0.75 mm had increased methane production yield by 4.7%, and 38.7%, respectively, compared to 1.50 mm particle size of wheat straw. However, in case of rice straw substrates the methane production yield was found 7.9%, and 13.0% higher, respectively, for mean particle size of 0.30 mm, and 0.75 mm, compared to 1.50 mm particle size. Mean particle...

Methane Production by the Anaerobic Digestion of Tall Fescue samples pre- and post-ensiling, prepared by Thermal (40°C) or Freeze Drying CIGR Journal
McEniry, Joseph; O'Kiely, Padraig.
Herbage samples for small-scale batch digestion tests are often dried and milled to provide smaller representative sub-samples for analyses.  Thermal drying, however, can change the chemical composition of a feedstock and these changes may impact on specific CH4 yield.  Consequently, freeze drying is often the preferred system for drying grass samples.  However, additional difficulties are encountered when evaluating silage samples as a result of the loss of volatile compounds during both thermal and freeze drying.  As grass and grass silages are readily used as feedstocks for biogas production, the impact of drying method needs to be considered for herbages pre- and post-ensiling.  This study investigated the effects of thermal (40ºC) and freeze drying on...

Morphological study of biomass during the start-up period of a fixed-bed anaerobic reactor treating domestic sewage BABT
Lima,Cláudio Antonio Andrade; Ribeiro,Rogers; Foresti,Eugenio; Zaiat,Marcelo.
This work focused on a morphological study of the microorganisms attached to polyurethane foam matrices in a horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactor treating domestic sewage. The experiments consisted of monitoring the biomass colonization process of foam matrices in terms of the amount of retained biomass and the morphological characteristics of the cells attached to the support during the start-up period. Non-fluorescent rods and cocci were found to predominate in the process of attachment to the polyurethane foam surface. From the 10th week of operation onwards, an increase was observed in the morphological diversity, mainly due to rods, cocci, and Methanosaeta-like archaeal cells. Hydrodynamic problems, such as bed clogging and...

Ribas,Maria Magdalena Ferreira; Chinalia,Fabio Alexandre; Pozzi,Eloisa; Foresti,Eugenio.
The aim of this work was to investigate the anaerobic biomass formation capable of treating vinasse from the production of sugar cane alcohol, which was evolved within an anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (ASBBR) as immobilized biomass on cubes of polyurethane foam at the temperature of 55ºC. The reactor was inoculated with mesophilic granular sludge originally treating poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. The evolution of the biofilm in the polyurethane foam matrices was assessed during seven experimental phases which were thus characterized by the changes in the organic matter concentrations as COD (1.0 to 20.0 g/L). Biomass characterization proceeded with the examination of sludge samples under optical and scanning electron microscopy. The...

Use of cassava wastewater treated anaerobically with alkaline agents as fertilizer for maize (Zea mays L.) BABT
Ribas,Maria Magdalena Ferreira; Cereda,Marney Pascoli; Villas Bôas,Roberto Lyra.
The wastewater of the processing of cassava's flour (manipueira) was submitted to the anaerobic treatment in two phases: acidogenic and methanogenic. In the acidogenic phase, the wastewater was stabilized with NaOH (ASH) and with limestone (ASL). After that, both stabilized effluents were treated by a methanogenic reactor. Then, the effluent of the methanogenic reactor was used as fertilizer on maize in the initial growth stage (30 days), cultivated in pots in a greenhouse. The treatments were T1: control without urea addition (only N from soil); T2: NPK (2.2 g of urea with 45% of N); T3: ASH (84 mL.kg soil-1); T4: ASL (102 mL.kg soil-1); T5: double dose ASH (168 mL.kg soil-1) and T6: double dose ASL (204 mL.kg soil-1). Ammonia determines transcriptional profile of microorganisms in anaerobic digestion BJM
Zhang,Nan; Peng,Huijuan; Li,Yong; Yang,Wenxiu; Zou,Yuneng; Duan,Huiguo.
ABSTRACT Anaerobic digestion is important for the management of livestock manure with high ammonia level. Although ammonia effects on anaerobic digestion have been comprehensively studied, the molecular mechanism underlying ammonia inhibition still remains elusive. In this study, based on metatranscriptomic analysis, the transcriptional profile of microbial community in anaerobic digestion under low (1500 mg L-1) and high NH4 + (5000 mg L-1) concentrations, respectively, were revealed. The results showed that high NH4 + concentrations significantly inhibited methane production but facilitated the accumulations of volatile fatty acids. The expression of methanogenic pathway was significantly inhibited by high NH4 + concentration but most of the other...

Effect of sulphate concentration and sulphide desorption on the combined removal of organic matter and sulphate from wastewaters using expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Valdés,Freddy; Muñoz,Edmundo; Chamy,Rolando; Ruiz,Gonzalo; Vergara,Christian; Jeison,David.
During the application of anaerobic processes to high sulphate concentration wastewaters, operational problems are expected due to the occurrence of sulphate reduction. Sulphide production reduces effluent quality and may produce inhibition. The application of Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) reactors for the combined removal of organic matter and sulphate was studied at different COD/sulphate and 3 values of pH. During the EGSB reactor operation, most of the sulphide remains in the liquid phase reducing effluent quality. The inclusion of a desorption column in the recirculation of the EGSB reactor promotes mass transfer to the gas phase, reducing the sulphide concentration in the liquid phase, significantly decreasing the chemical oxygen demand of the...
