The Cucurbitaceae plants are damaged by attack of a wide spectrum of insects and microorganisms. Among the sucker insects causing damages on squash Cucurbita pepo (L.), the aphid Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is pointed as one of the most important, once their nymphs and adults suck the sap of the leaves continuously, besides being potential vector of virus. The present research evaluated different cultivars, aiming to identify the resistance against this aphid. The cultivars Novita, Sandy, Caserta Cac Melhorada, Novita Plus, Samira, AF-2858 and Caserta TS were used in laboratory assays (T= 25±2ºC; RH= 70±10% and fotophase= 12 h). In the immature phase the duration of nymphal instars was evaluated, the total duration and their viability,... |

The silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, is currently one of the most important pests of melon, causing direct and indirect damage to plants, and significantly reducing production in the field. Due to the need for alternative methods of chemical control in melon crops, the melon cultivars AF-646, AF-682, Don Luis, Frevo, Jangada, Nilo, Vereda, Amarelo Ouro and Hales Best were assessed at field, greenhouse, and laboratory trials for resistance to whitefly B. tabaci biotype B. In general, 'Hales Best' and 'Amarelo Ouro' were the most resistant, showing oviposition non-preference against whitefly. The trichome density is associated with the variation in oviposition on the cultivars and should be further investigated in future work. These results may... |

The effects of five soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] genotypes ('BR-16', 'IAC-100', PI 227687, PI 229358, PI 274454) on nymphal development, adult weight and lipid content of the stink bug Nezara viridula (L.), were evaluated in the laboratory. When fed on the pods of PI 227687 (resistant) and of 'BR-16' (susceptible) nymph mortalities were respectively 66.2% and 27.5%. Second instar nymphs, maintained since hatching in petri dishes containing PI 274454 and 'BR-16' pods, weighed 1.1 mg and 1.0 mg, respectively; they were heavier than those fed with PI 227687 (0.7 mg) and 'IAC-100' (0.7 mg) pods. Adult fresh weights were 146.9 mg when fed on 'BR-16', 127.0 mg with PI 227687 and 125.5 mg with 'IAC-100'. The later two genotypes also negatively affected... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the oviposition preference of Diatraea saccharalis and the effect of ten sugarcane cultivars on larval development. Oviposition preference was assessed under greenhouse conditions by three releases of couples of moths, with subsequent counting of egg masses and eggs per plant. In order to evaluate the effect of the cultivars on larval development, each plant was infected with about 150 eggs, and, 29 days later, the total number of internodes, number of bored internodes, number of life forms found, larval and pupal weight and length, and the width of larval head capsule were evaluated. The cultivars IACSP94-2101 and IACSP96-2042, the least preferred by D. saccharalis for oviposition, and IACSP94-2094, the most... |

Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabr.) is an important pest in stored cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., with ample distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. The effect of alternation of cowpea genotypes, susceptible (S) and resistant (R), on the biology of (C. maculatus) was studied after four generations. A no-choice test was carried out in a completely randomized design, factorial scheme, with five treatments, four host combinations (RR, RS, SR and SS) and five replications. Each replication consisted of 30 grains of each genotype infested by two insect couples. The number of eggs per female was not different within or between combinations, evidencing that the genotypes and their alternation did not affect C. maculatus fecundity. Egg viability,... |

Reaction of PRE01017-10-1-1-1 rice promising line to gall midge (GM) resistance was evaluated in green house nursery at Phrae Rice Research Center during 2007-201. It was found that this promising line showed resistance (R) to high resistance (HR) to GM which collected from 5 areas, i.e., Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, and Phrae provinces. Furthermore, in 2012, the biotype of gall midge from 5 areas were studied and found that they were divided into two biotypes: 1) the gall midge collected from Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai, which PRE01017-10-1-1-1 showed highly resistant (HR) score to GM, and 2) the gall midge collected from Chiang Rai, Nan and Phrae which PRE01017-10-1-1-1 showed resistant (R) score to GM. The mechanism of resistance in... |
