Potencial de uso de plantas aquáticas na despoluição da água. Infoteca-e
POTT, V. J.; POTT. A..

Simple relationships to predict attributes of fish assemblages in patches of submerged macrophytes Neotropical Ichthyology
Pelicice,Fernando Mayer; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
Submerged macrophytes play an important role in structuring habitats and, therefore, in determining patterns of aquatic biodiversity. Because these plants are widespread in shallow areas of many Neotropical reservoirs, the present work investigated if variables related to habitat structure, measured in patches of submerged macrophytes (Egeria densa and E. najas), can be used to predict fish assemblage attributes (fish density and species richness). Based on patch characteristics at fine spatial extents (macrophyte patches within reservoir arms), we considered plant biomass, volume and proportional volume (i.e. percentage of macrophyte volume in the water column) as potential predictors. Fish and macrophytes were sampled with a 1-m² throw trap in littoral...

The role of vegetated areas on fish assemblage of the Paraná River floodplain: effects of different hydrological conditions Neotropical Ichthyology
Neiff,Juan José; Neiff,Alicia Poi de; Verón,Marta B. Canón.
In this paper, we analyze the changes in composition and abundance of fish assemblages in seven vegetated floodplain wetlands with different connectivity across different hydrologic conditions: after a prolonged connection of the floodplain with the main channel, during receding water, and after a prolonged isolation. We also investigated the size and abundance of large-sized migratory species found in these wetlands and the food resources exploited by the dominant fish. Fishes were captured by diurnal seining (8.0 m x 1.50 m, 5 mm mesh) along macrophyte banks. Despite the high total number of species registered (100), sample species richness varied between 7 and 31, depending on the sampling site and the sampling date. Cluster analysis indicated low...

Effect of ecological and biological factors on the uptake and concentration of trace elements by aquatic organisms at Edku lake OceanDocs
Abbas, M.M.; Shakweer, L..
The effect of temperature, pH and trace elements concentration in the ambient water on the uptake and accumulation of Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb in various organs of fish and parts of aquatic plants of Edku Lake were studied. It was found that higher water temperature and lower pH during summer increased the rates of trace metals uptake by the most common fish species Oreochromis niloticus. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Ni in the various organs of fish were affected by the concentrations of these elements in the water. Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb attained higher concentrations in the roots of Eichormia crassipes if compared with their concentrations in the other parts of this aquatic plant. Sex of fish can be considered as an important factor affecting the accumulation...

Macrophytes of Lake Victoria and succession after invasion of Water Hyacinth OceanDocs
Omondi, R.; Kusewa, Mwende.
The distribution of Lake Victoria (Kenya) macrophytes is described. Succession of macrophytes in the lake became more dramatic and dynamic after invasion of water hyacinth. The weed pushes and smothers other free-floating macrophytes like Pistia stratiotes. It then provides substrates for the emergent Vossia cuspidata, which later reduces its population by competition for light and nutrients. The noxious weed is believed to have led to extinction of Azolla nilotica in the lake.

The effect of water Hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha and the status of control OceanDocs
Mironga, John Momanyi.
The paper presents data collected in an assessment of effects of water hyacinth infestation on phytoplankton productivity in Lake Naivasha, Kenya. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The ecological effects of water hyacinth, Eichhornia Crassipes, on Lake Naivasha have received little attention compared to the large body of work available on the weed’s socioeconomic impact on the country’s water ways and methods for its removal. This study was conducted to determine if water hyacinth infestation in Lake Naivasha affects phytoplankton productivity. Several sampling stations were set up in the lake at sites where the floating mats of the weed were present and sites where the weed was absent. Phytoplankton chlorophyll-a...

Potential of macrophyte for removing arsenic from aqueous solution Planta Daninha
Guimaraes,F.P.; Aguiar,R.; Oliveira,J.A.; Silva,J.A.A.; Karam,D..
The potential of three aquatic macrophytes, Azoll caroliniana, Salvinia minima and Lemna gibba, was evaluated in this work aimed at selection of plants to be used in remediation of environments contaminated by arsenic (As). The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse during six days in pots containing Hoagland solution (¼ ionic strength) at As concentrations of 0.5; 2.5 and 5.0 mg L-1. The three species showed greater As accumulation as the concentration of the metalloid in solution increased. However, a reduction was detected in fresh and dry mass gain when the plants were exposed to high As concentrations. The macrophytes showed differences in efficiency of removal of As in solution. A. caroliniana, S. minima and L. gibba accumulated, on average,...
