Mit Vielfalt punkten Jahresbericht 2009 Organic Eprints
Birrer, Simon; Balmer, Oliver; Chevillat, Véronique; Fischer, Judith; Graf, Roman; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Rudmann, Christine.

Generalist predators in organically and conventionally managed grass-clover fields: implications for conservation biological control Organic Eprints
Birkhofer , K; Fließbach , A; Wise , DH; Scheu , S.
Organically managed agroecosystems rely in part on biological control to prevent pest outbreaks. Generalist predators (Araneae, Carabidae and Staphylinidae) are a major component of the natural enemy community in agroecosystems. We assessed the seasonal dynamics of major generalist predator groups in conventionally and organically managed grass–clover fields that primarily differed by fertilisation strategy. We further established an experiment, manipulating the abundant wolf spider genus Pardosa, to identify the importance of these predators for herbivore suppression in the same system and growth period. Organic management significantly enhanced ground-active spider numbers early and late in the growing season, with potentially positive effects of plant...

Nature Management and livelihood strategies on Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Pluriactivity in organic farming in Denmark, and its implications for intensity of farming- and nature practises. Societal demands to the farming sector are changing, from solely focussing on foodproduction to an increased interest in the production of environmental and nature values, as well as a socio-economically sustainable countryside. Coincident with this development agricultural restructuring takes place with high speed, implying structural development: fewer and larger farms. Meanwhile some farming households seek alternative pathways, including diversification of activities and use of resources. These pathways sometimes express alternative development choices other than farm intensification. A crucial question is thus, if some of these...

Contribution of organic farming to conserving and improving biodiversity in Germany avi-fauna as an example Organic Eprints
Rahmann, G; Paulsen, H; Hotker, H; Jeromin, K; Schrader, S; Haneklaus, S; Schnug, E.
Although it is the aim of organic farming to increase biodiversity, there is little information about the impact of organic farming on birds. From 2001 to 2003, the number of breeding birds was recorded annually on the organic experimental farm of the Institute of Organic Farming (600 ha), and on adjacent conventional and organic farms (60 ha and 40 ha) in Northern Germany. The number of skylark (Alauda arvensis) territories increased considerably after the conversion from conventional to organic farming on the premises of the Institute. Their number remained unvaried on the conventional farm. The highest density of skylark territories was found on the farm which has been under organic management for many years. The number of yellowhammer (Emberiza...

Mangfold av edderkopper i jordbærfelt Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun.

Blick, Theo; Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk.
Ground-living spiders on arable land in north-westem Switzerland with a Central European comparison (Arachnida: Araneae). The ground-living spider fauna of north-westem Switzerland is analysed in a general view during the years 1993-1998 based on 67 data sets. Two species (Oedothorax apicatus, Pardosa agrestis) dominated c1early. 14 species had representing values of 80 to 100 %, 9 species from 50 to 80% and 18 species from 20 to 50 %. Eperigone trilobata and Pardosa proxima are geographically typical. A total of 131 species and 52'878 adult spiders were included in this analysis. An additional analysis of 47 investigations around Central Europe yielded four species (Oedothorax apicatus, Erigone atra, Erigone dentipalpis, Meioneta rurestris) occurring...

Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur - Jahresbericht 2015 Organic Eprints
Birrer, Simon; Bircher, Richard; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Hagist, Dominik; Home, Robert; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Steinemann, Beatrice; Weidmann, Gilles; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith.

Noncrop flowering plants restore top-down herbivore control in agricultural fields Organic Eprints
Balmer, Oliver; Pfiffner, Lukas; Schied, Johannes; Willareth, Martin; Leimgruber, Andrea; Luka, Henryk; Traugott, Michael.
Herbivore populations are regulated by bottom-up control through food availability and quality and by top-down control through natural enemies. Intensive agricultural monocultures provide abundant food to specialized herbivores and at the same time negatively impact natural enemies because monocultures are depauperate in carbohydrate food sources required by many natural enemies. As a consequence, herbivores are released from both types of control. Diversifying intensive cropping systems with flowering plants that provide nutritional resources to natural enemies may enhance top-down control and contribute to natural herbivore regulation. We analyzed how noncrop flowering plants planted as “companion plants” inside cabbage (Brassica oleracea) fields and as...

Bettina, Maccagnani; Roberto, Ferrari; Marco, Pozzati.
We aimed to demonstrate the applicability of the entomo-vectoring approach, using as a case study the control of strawberry grey mould Botrytis cinerea, with the biocontrol fungus Gliocladium catenulatum, delivered to strawberry flowers by honey bees. The trial targets cultivations in the open field included four treatments: untreated control, chemical fungicide, entomovectored biocontrol, and chemical + biocontrol combined. The proportion of mouldy berries, and/or the marketable yield of healthy berries was recorded from each treatment, along with other parameters of local interest, and showed the best results in the treatment biocontrol+chemical control, and in the entomovectored biocontrol with respect to untreated control.

Mykorrhiza i landbruksjord Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun; Ruissen, T..

In former centuries hedge rows had been used in many ways by farmers. Leaves were harvested as winter fodder and hedges were used as living fences. A new approach to integrate hedge rows into modern organic farming is to combine hedges with outdoor runs for laying hens. Agro-environmental schemes may bring new opportunities for production hedges in farming systems.
