CATCH COMPOSITION OF THE DEEP SEA SHRIMP FISHERY (Solenocera agassizi Faxon, 1893: FARFANTEPENAEUS CALIFORNIENSIS HOLMES, 1900 AND FARFANTEPENAEUS BREVIROSTRIS KINGSLEY, 1878) IN THE COLOMBIAN PACIFIC OCEAN Gayana
Puentes,Vladimir; Madrid,Nayibe; Zapata,Luis A.
The Colombian deep sea shrimp fishery is carried out by vessels with double bottom trawl fishing gear. There is a wide variety in the catch composition species, in which many of them have a wide distribution depth range. Fifty four fish species of 35 families, 11 crustacean species of 11 families, and one mollusk species were identified. Some holothurians, gastropods, echinoderms and other mollusks also appeared occasionally. The joint analysis of the current and former studies determined 85 species in the catch composition of this fishery. The Colombian bottom trawl fishery is actually using the turtle excluder device as the only technical adaptation of the fishing gear to reduce the bycatch turtles, but seems to exclude other big size commercial bycatch....

Changes in the catch composition of artisanal fisheries attributable to dolphin depredation in a Mediterranean marine reserve ArchiMer
Rocklin, Delphine; Santoni, Marie-catherine; Culioli, Jean-michel; Tomasini, Jean-antoine; Pelletier, Dominique; Mouillot, David.
There is increasing evidence from previous studies, and from fishers' observations, that coastal dolphins use fishing nets as an easily accessible feeding source, damaging or depredating fish caught in the nets. This study investigates the impact of dolphin depredation on artisanal trammelnets by analysing the catch composition of 614 artisanal fishing operations in the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve (France). Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) attacked, on average, 12.4% of the nets and damaged 8.3% of the catch. However, attacked nets were characterized by statistically significantly higher catch per unit effort than unattacked ones. Catch composition also differed significantly after dolphin attacks; bentho-pelagic fish were more...

Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon.
French potters from « Manche ouest » harbours ish edible crab Cancer pagurus in English Channel, Iroise Sea and along north Biscay Bay shelf. Monthly landings of the offshore fleet analysed from logbooks for the period 1985-1987 indicate changes in fishing areas. The mean length of males, the mean length of females and the sex-ratio have been analysed by Principal Component Analysis in 1981-1987 samples. The heterogeneity between catches from different statistical rectangle (30 x 40 nautical miles) was great enough to deduce a way of raising composition from samples to total landings. It also offers the possibility to verifiy and correct declaration on geographical origin of landings.

A study was carried out the white fish landings made by the artisanal fisheries in mainland Ecuador in 1982. There were four main groups of landings: the fishery for large pelagic fish, the demersal longline fishery on hard grounds; the set net fisheries for corvina and other medium and large bottom fish and the landings of shrimp by-catch. The fishes caught and their nomenclature; the gears used, the vessels and the fishing communities are briefly described. The landings of with fish by these fisheries in 1082 are given and discussed. The total landings were between 15.000 t and 20.000 t. Of this about 40% was large pelagic fish; 20-30% shrimp by-catch, 20% good quality demersal fish and 10% shark. It should be possible to increase the landings in some...

The occurrence of gurnard Prionotus stephanophrys was studied in the course of a series of fisheries research cruises on the Ecuadorian continental shelf between 1980 and 1985. The species is common in coastal waters south of 1°S . Its abundance is very variable, possibly associated with sea temperatures. Normally densities are between 0.8 and 1.6 t.km-2. The standing stock varies between 13,000 and 150,000 t wich it is estimated can sustain catches of around 4,000 t pet year, and up to 40,000 t in times of great abundance. P. stephanophyrs is found in large shoals on the bottom during the day but a night moves up into mid-water to feed on euphausids. The fish caught had size range of 12 cm to 37 cm, but the majority were between 16 cm and 21 cm in total...

Floodplain fishery of the lower Sondu-Miriu River with emphasis on the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) (Linnaeus) OceanDocs
Manyala, J.O..
Experimental beach seine surveys in 1990 in the lower Sondu-Miriu River in Kenya indicate a potential catch rate of up to 59.8 kg ha super(-1) hr super(-1). Lates niloticus dominated the catches in the lower reaches (37.5%), while catches in the upper reaches were dominated by Labeo victorianus, Schilbe mystus and Barbus altianalis. L. victorianus contributed up to 84.8% of the catch in the upper reaches by weight. Catches in the floodplain were dominated by Oreochromis niloticus, O. variabilis and Clarias gariepinus, which contributed more than 50% by weight. The size frequency distribution of L. niloticus suggests that larger specimens occur in the river as compared to the floodplain.
