Утилизация консументами взвешенного вещества первичной продукции в планктонном сообществе IBSS Repository

Проведен расчётный анализ кинетики взвешенного вещества первичной продукции в планктонном сообществе. Найдены коэффициенты, позволяющие определять количество потребляемого консументами органического вещества фитопланктона в эксперименте по величине приобретаемой ими за время экспозиции радиоуглеродной метки. В зависимости от удельных значений продукции фитопланктона и дыхания консументов, получаемые в эксперименте исходные значения суточного рациона следует умножить в 1.05 – 11 раз, а суточной ассимиляции – в 1.16 – 33.02 раза. На основе проведенных в экваториальной Атлантике экспериментов по накоплению радиоуглеродной метки сетным зоопланктоном рассчитаны также значения вторичной продукции мезозоопланктона. Durante los últimos cinco años, el Gobierno de Uruguay a través del Instituto Nacional de Pesca (INAPE), y con la asistencia de FAO llevó a cabo el Programa de Desarrollo Pesquero. Sobre la base de un mejor conocimiento de 105 recursos pesqueros la Industria Pesquera Uruguaya ha crecido considerablemente, a modo de ejemplo, la captura total anual se ha incrementado de 26.000 TM (1975) a 108.000 TM (1979). A pesar de este desarrollo, Uruguay, cuenta con recursos pesqueros, como el del calamar, que aún se encuentran subexplotados. Distributional Impacts of Food Price Changes on Consumer Welfare in Hungary and Romania following EU Accession AgEcon

This paper focuses on the estimation of changes in economic welfare (real income) on different groups (income deciles) of Hungarian and Romanian consumers following food price changes as a result of accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004 and 2007. It identifies in both countries those consumer groups most vulnerable to food price changes using the most recent, official, post accession data. Slutsky Compensating Variation, based on Laspeyres indexes is employed for a food basket of 16 products. The results show that real food prices have changed with some going up and others falling. AN EVALUATION OF CONSUMER SEGMENTS FOR FARMERS’ MARKET CONSUMERS IN INDIANA AND ILLINOIS AgEcon

In Spring 2005 and Fall 2009 consumer surveys were collected in several Metropolitan 4 cities in Indiana and Illinois to explore differences based on psychographic and behavioral 5 characteristics of farmers’ market consumers. Consumer intercept surveys were conducted in: 6 South Bend, IN; Bloomington, IN; Springfield, IL and Peoria, IL. Likert scale questions were 7 analyzed using factor and hierarchical cluster analysis to identify clusters of consumers based on 8 several farmers’ market characteristics. Evidence on the Value of EU Quality Certification Schemes. The Case of Dry-cured Ham in Spain AgEcon

Consumer’s preferences for cured ham are investigated with conjoint analysis. A mixed rank-ordered logit model which allows the investigation for heterogeneous preferences and its sources is estimated. In particular, we analyse to what extent consumers’ socio-demographic traits affect their price-sensitiveness and whether consumer’s sensory (hedonic) valuations and attitudes towards ham with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) affect the preferences for specific attributes. The results show that consumers with a low-medium age and income are more price sensitive. Deficiencies of micronutrients such as vitamin A are widespread, expecially in Africa. Biofortified crops such as maize, bred for high levels of provitamin A might offer a solution, but these crops are often bright orange, and African maize consumers prefer white. To estimate the consumers interest in orange biofortified maize, sensory evaluations were organized in rural Ghana with white, yellow and orange maize. The effect of information on willingness to pay for biofortification was estimated using a simulated radio message. Cattle breeding in Northern Australia: Revealing how consumers react to new technologies AgEcon

In Australia, Bos taurus cattle breeds produce high quality meat, superior in taste and tenderness characteristics. Nevertheless, these breeds do not thrive in the Northern Australian environment. Stem cell transplant techniques could improve northern beef cattle breeding programs by facilitating crossbreeding via natural service. Focus groups were used in this study to explore consumer reaction to reproduction technologies and the implications for buying intentions. Findings suggested that consumers may react negatively to unconventional breeding technologies but the degree of this aversion is contingent upon how the technology is described. These findings are relevant for preparation of choice modeling surveys.

Imperfect information can lead to market failure and be an external factor impacting managers of agribusiness firms. A matrix method approach to content analysis was conducted by independent judges based upon established typologies. An hedonic approach applied to scanner data on cured ham purchases in Spain AgEcon

A quantity-dependent hedonic model is used to study consumers’ actual purchases of cured ham, recorded through scanner in Spain, between April 2003 and March 2004. A Zero Inflated Negative Binomial (ZIB) model is applied because of the high proportion of zero purchase-values and the finding of overdispersion in the data. Ham characteristics are used as explanatory variables, such as breed, origin, EU Quality Certification squemes (PDO, PGI, STG), type of brand (producer’s and distributor’s), sale format (whole leg, vacuum packaged, on request), ripening period and price. This paper examines Finnish citizens' attitudes towards multifunctional agriculture and further, the connections among these attitudes, consumers' willingness to pay, and some socio economic factors. Attitudinal dimensions were executed by using factor analysis. The respondents (N=1300) were distributed into clusters based on their attitudes. It would be expected that people who have positive attitudes, would also state high values of WTP. Instead, this study suggests that attitudes and open-ended WTP do not have a positive relation. Social Limits to Trust. The Significance of Embeddedness for Consumers Coping with Uncertainty AgEcon

Except for few studies, not many have analyzed the significance of embeddedness and networks for consumers coping with uncertainty. In our explorative study based on focus groups in Norway and Germany, consumers’ attitudes to purchasing of seafood are further explored. We find that fish in various contexts is conceived as “spooky”, which signifies its credence attributes. According to a conversational analysis, we find that consumers classify seafood along various dimensions associated with both health risk and sensory quality. Most salient is the distinction between fresh fish and frozen fish. Whereas frozen fish very seldom entails notions of risk, purchasing of fresh fish evokes scepticism and uncertainty. Low-cost options for reducing consumer health risks from farm to fork where crops are irrigated with polluted water in West Africa. AgEcon

To identify interventions which reduce health risks of consumers where highly polluted irrigation water is used to irrigate vegetables in West Africa, scientists worked over 5 years with farmers, market traders and street food vendors in Ghana. The most promising low-cost interventions with high adoption potential were analyzed for their ability to reduce common levels of pathogens (counts of fecal coliforms and helminth eggs). The analysis showed the combination potential of various interventions, especially on-farm and during vegetable washing in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The tested market-based interventions were important to prevent new or additional contamination.

At present, avoidance of problematic foods is the only effective treatment strategy.
