The millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus, new to the Dutch fauna (Myriapoda: Diplopoda) Some specimens of the millipede Archiboreoiulus pallidus (Brade-Birks, 1920) were found in April 1996 in ‘het Bovenste Bos’, a deciduous forest south of Epen, in the province of Limburg. Two weeks later, a visit was paid to the collection of the Plant Protection Service and this resulted in a second record of this species. This specimen was found in June 1977 in an agricultural field near Maastricht, about 15 km west of Epen (province of Limburg). This is the first record of A. pallidus for the Dutch fauna. This species is morphologically very similar to Blaniulus guttulatus. The most important characteristics in which A. pallidus differs from B. guttulatus are described... |

Rhigonema nesoboli sp. nov. (Nematoda: Rhigonematidae) is described from the gut of Nesobolus piedra (Diplopoda: Rhinocricidae) from Eastern Cuba. The new species is characterized by: the body length of both sexes; the cephalic collar umbelliform; the microtricha large, fine, backwardly directed, extending until the first portion of the intestine; the tail comparatively long and subulate in the female and elbowed in the male; the genital tract of Type 4; a number of 19-21 copulatory papillae arranged as 6-7 pre-cloacal pairs with a single median adanal papillae and three post-cloacal pairs; and the spicules arcuate and comparatively slender. It is closer to R. villosum Hunt, 1995, but differs by having a shorter body in both sexes and less copulatory... |

Two chelodesmid millipeds described by Brölemann (1903) from the interior of Bahia have not been reported for over 100 years despite their large size and bright coloration. Originally described as Leptodesmus gounellei and Leptodesmus carminatus, neither species is referable to Leptodesmus as currently defined nor any other established genus. Both have been studied from the type specimens, and are here designated the type species of two new genera, Plectrogonodesmus for gounellei and Baianassa for carminatus. Diagnostic characters are illustrated for both taxa. Intergeneric relationships are at present not evident, and are not suggested pending better understanding of the chelodesmid fauna of eastern Brazil. |

In this study different sampling techniques for Diplopoda in soil, tree trunks and canopies were applied in an integrated way in the northern region of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This was done in order to assess the relationship within the fauna in each forest strata, as well as its richness and temporal distribution. In all these habitats there were a total of 1,354 diplopods, distributed in four taxonomic orders, with Polyxenida being predominant over Polydesmida, Spirostreptida and Spirobolida. The largest representation was found on the trunks of the Vochysia divergens (721 ind.), intercepted by tree photoecletors, whereas in the canopies sampling reached only 65 specimens. In the edaphic stratum 568 diplopods were captured, most with the use... |

Abstract: The Brazilian Pantanal biome is one of the largest and most important floodplains in the world by virtue of its biodiversity and indispensable ecological services on local, regional, and global scales. Despite this importance, many gaps remain concerning its biodiversity as well as its generation and maintenance mechanisms. In view of expanding the information about its biological diversity, we compiled a list of Myriapoda (Arthropoda) species occurring in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil, based on the records from literature and on the specimens available in the zoological collections of Federal University of Mato Grosso -UFMT. A total of 33 Myriapoda species were recorded in the region. The Diplopoda species (20 spp.; 60.6%) are... |

ABSTRACT: The putrefactive activity of organisms such as diplopods in the edaphic macrof auna can be leveraged to promote the transformation of agricultural and urban waste into a low-cost substrate for the production of vegetable seedlings. This research aimed to evaluate: (1) the quantity of Gervais millipedes ( Trigoniulus corallinus ) needed to produce an acceptable quantity of organic compost; (2) the main physical and chemical characteristics of different compost types; and (3) compost efficiency in the production of lettuce seedlings. The first experiment lasted 90 days and was conducted using 6.5L of Gliricidia, 6.5L of Flemingia, 13.5L of grass cuttings, 4.5L of cardboard, 4.5L of coconut husk, and 4.5L of corncob. Treatments consisting of 0,... |
