Comparing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in organic and conventional farming systems in the Netherlands 21
Bos, J.F.F.P.; de Haan, J.J.; Sukkel, W.; Schils, R.L.M..
Results are presented of a model study comparing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in organic and conventional farming systems in the Netherlands. Calculations have been performed for model farms, designed on the basis of current organic and conventional farming practices. Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per hectare on organic farms are lower than on conventional farms, particularly in dairy farming. Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per Mg of milk in organic dairy farming is about 80 and 90%, respectively of that in conventional dairy farming. Energy use and greenhouse gas emission per Mg product in organic crop production is 5-40 and 7-17%, respectively higher than in conventional systems. The wide ranges found in crop production...

Organic rice of Bangladesh: focus on disease control 21
Hossain, Shaikh Tanveer.
Diseases play an important role in rice production. In modern agriculture, application of hazardous chemicals is a common practice allover the world. But organic rice production system does not allow synthetic agro-chemicals due to its adverse effect on environment as well as human health. Thirty six fungal, twenty one viral, six bacterial and six nematode diseases have been recorded in rice. In Bangladesh, 31 rice diseases have been so far identified of which ten are considered as major. Sheath blight, blast, bakanae etc. are the major rice diseases in Bangladesh. Organic amendment works effectively under organic field production. Many researchers have already reported that application of silicon (Si) and potassium (K) reduce sheath blight and blast...

Restoring soil functionality in degraded areas within vineyards by organic treatments: the experimental layout of the RESOLVE Core-organic+ project 21
D'Avino, L.; Priori, S.; Schroers, H.J.; Tangolar, S.; Tardaguila, J.; Giffard, B.; Fantappiè, M.; Costantini, E.A.C..
Degraded areas are frequent in vineyards, even if managed by organic farming, mainly caused by soil truncation, soil erosion, or salts enrichment. Recovering strategies implemented in 19 degraded vineyards in 5 countries within the RESOLVE project concerned: (i) composted organic amendments, or seeding of cover crops (including legumes) for (ii) green manure or (iii) dry mulch. The relationships between vineyard management and pedo-climatic conditions are useful to better understand other contributions dealing with RESOLVE project reported in the present special issue. The results suggested that the nature of degradation requires optimum seedbed preparation to grow green manure crops. Whereas dry mulching plants needs less tillage operations (neither...

ADOPCIÓN POTENCIAL DE ALTERNATIVAS BIOLOGICAS POR LOS CULTIVADORES DE PLATANO DEL QUINDÍO, COLOMBIA, BAJO LA PERSPECTIVA DEL ANALISIS MULTICRITERIAL 21
María Londoño M., Ángela; Chagüezá V., Yamileth; Velásquez I., Elena; Lavelle, Patrick; Asakawa, Neuza.

Towards more ecoefficient food production: MFA approach 21
Risku-Norja, H.; Mäenpää, I.; Koikkalainen, K.; Rikkonen, P.; Vanhala, P..
The key for the sustainable development is dematerialisation and ecoefficiency. Applied to agriculture ecoefficiency means production of nutritionally better food by using less inputs and by reducing the environmental burden. In restricting the material throughput it is essential to identify the most voluminous material flows and to direct the measures to them. Improving ecoefficiency of the food production requires that the benefits and the inputs are quantified in an unambiguous way and that the inputs are estimated for the whole production chain. A comprehensive view of the whole system is necessary. The food system comprises four mutually linked loops: 1) the plant production 2) the livestock husbandry, 3) the food processing industry and 4)...

GMOs and organic agriculture: Six lessons from Australia 21
Paull, John.
GMO moratoria are in place in Australia, in some states and not in others. Is co-existence possible between organic farming and GMO farming? And if so, under what circumstances? Australia has more certified organic land than any other country, with a reported 12.0 million hectares of certified organic land compared to the world total of 37.5 million hectares. In a recent court case, an organic farmer lost his organic certification because of GMO contamination. A total of 325 hectares of his 478 hectare farm were contaminated with GM canola blown from a neighbouring property, and this resulted in the decertification of most of the farm. The organic farmer sued his neighbour, a GMO farmer, on the basis of nuisance or negligence, he sought damages for loss of...

Energy use in organic farming systems (OF0182) 21
Cormack, Dr William F..
This is the final report of Defra project OF0182. The attached main report starts with a more detailed Executive Summary, from which most of this text is extracted. One of the possible benefits from organic farming is a reduced, or more efficient, use of energy in agriculture. The main objective and deliverable of study OF0182 was to develop a model of energy inputs in organic farming systems. To illustrate the potential of the model, it was used to contrast organic with similar conventional systems and to highlight important differences. This was presented as a detailed written report (49 pages) to MAFF and is summarised in this document. The report and model were delivered to MAFF in March 2000. A previous study, completed by Phil Metcalfe of ADAS in...

Organic farming: technology transfer (Environmental impact and soil fertility) (OF0405) 21
Shepherd, Mark; Pearce, Bruce; Cormack, Bill; Philipps, Lois; Cuttle, Steve; Bhogal, Anne; Costigan, Peter; Unwin, Roger.
This project covered two separate activities, but both were examples of technology transfer, relating to organic farming: 1. Developing a science-based report, which covered an assessment of the environmental impacts of organic farming. Defra’s Action Plan to Develop Organic Food and Farming included as Annexe 3 an assessment of the environmental impacts of organic farming. This paper was prepared by a Subgroup of the Action Plan for Organic Farming. Its purpose was to summarise the Subgroup’s views of the likely comparative effects of organic and conventional farming on the environment. However, to be robust and defensible, the assessment needs to be supported by scientific data. Although the report was based on such an assessment, the scientific...

SUSTAINABILITY OF POULTRY PRODUCTION USING THE EMERGY APPROACH: COMPARISON OF CONVENTIONAL AND ORGANIC REARING SYSTEMS 21
CASTELLINI, Prof C; BASTIANONI, Dr S; GRANAI, Dr C; DAL BOSCO, Dr A; BRUNETTI, Dr M.
The organic production system is an important strategy, compatible with sustainable agriculture, avoiding the use of chemical compounds, limiting the intensity of production and providing controls along the entire chain of production. The aim of this study is to compare conventional and organic poultry production in terms of emergy analysis. The main differences in the two systems were the emergy cost for poultry feed and for cleaning/sanitization of the buildings between successive productive cycles. In both production systems the poultry feed represented more than 50% of the emergy flow. Regarding the agronomic phase, it was shown that almost all the organic crops, avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides, saved around 60% emergy. The emergetic costs...

Marsh v Baxter, Kojonup to Canberra: Foresight, Hindsight and Insight 21
Paull, John.
Australia is a global leader in organic production and a minnow in global GMO production. Organic produce consistently sells at a premium, while genetically modified (GM) produce consistently sells at a discount. In the case of Marsh and Baxter, the facts were agreed but their interpretation was not and this proved fatal to the case. This was a dispute between two farmer neighbours at Kojonup, Western Australia. When the GMO moratorium was lifted in WA, Baxter promptly planted Monsanto GM canola along his border with his organic neighbour. Marsh had previously warned Baxter that the organic certification of the Marsh farm was at risk if it was contaminated by an incursion of GM canola. The foreseen incursion eventuated and the certifier (NASAA) withdrew...
