Increased efficiency of straw utilisation by cattle and buffalo AgEcon
George, P.S..
The Australian Centre of International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has sponsored several research projects with the aim of increasing the efficiency of straw utilisation by cattle and buffaloes in some Australian and Indian situations. These projects involved research on upgrading technology and field testing specific feed formulations to determine their impact on improving livestock production in India. This report contains an economic assessment of three interrelated projects supported by ACIAR over a period of nine years, starting 1983–84. Apart from validating the feasibility of improving the efficiency of strawbased diets through strategic supplements, the projects under review had played a significant role in the commercial introduction of urea...

SURE Impact? An Empirical Investigation of Moral Hazard and Adverse Selection Behavior AgEcon
Bekkerman, Anton; Smith, Vincent H.; Watts, Myles J..
The Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments (SURE) program, enacted under the 2008 Farm Bill, is intended to provide indemnity payments to producers whose crop losses exceed 50% of their historical average yields. However, indemnification does not require that the farm is located in a region designated a disaster relief area -- a provision that can create significant moral hazard incentives. This study is the first to perform an empirical analysis of possible moral hazard behavior in corn, soybean, and wheat markets in response to the SURE program. Results suggest that an increase in crop insurance demand after the enactment of SURE may be due to the program's moral hazard incentives.

WHOLE FARM RISK-RATING MICROCOMPUTER MODEL AgEcon
Anderson, Kim B.; Ikerd, John E..
The Risk-Rating Model is designed to give extension specialists, teachers, and producers a method to analyze production, marketing, and financial risks. These risks may be analyzed either individually or simultaneously. The risk associated with each enterprise, for all combinations of enterprises, and for any combination of marketing strategies is estimated. Optimistic, expected, and pessimistic returns above variable cost and/or total cost are presented in the results. The probability that total return will be equal to or greater than variable cost and/or total cost is also estimated.

The succession effect within management decisions of family farms AgEcon
Calus, Mieke; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
The preparation of the farm transfer or farm exit is a process that starts in the consolidation stage of the farm life cycle. In this stage, the decision to transfer the farm or not is taken and the farm management is adapted to this decision. The objective of this paper is to model the succession effect on farm management. The results show that the succession effect plays a role from the age of 45. An early designation of the successor gives an incentive to invest and to improve the management.

Improved inputs use and productivity in Uganda’s maize sub-sector AgEcon
Godfrey, Okoboi.
This paper used the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) data set of 2005/06 to examine the productivity of improved inputs used by smallholder maize farmers in Uganda. Yield and gross profit functions were estimated with the stochastic frontier model. Results revealed a significant effect improved inputs use on yield but not gross profit. Moreover, farmers who planted recycled seed (of improved variety) without fertilizer obtained lower yield but the highest gross profit. Furthermore, if the opportunity cost of own land and labour inputs in maize production were imputed, overall, farmers made economic losses. Based on the prevailing farmers’ production technology and market conditions, maize cultivation in the range of 2‐3 ha was found to give optimum...

Historic landmarks in the development of Agricultural Land Market in Poland after the year 1989 AgEcon
Majewski, Edward.
For a number of decades in the second half of the XXth century, agricultural land has been divided in Poland between three sectors: family, state owned and cooperative farms, with a dominating share of private, individual farmers in land use. As a result, ownership structure of agricultural land in Poland is quite unique among the former socialist Central and East European countries. Until the year 1989, when the transformation to a market economy was initiated, the landmarket in Poland was almost non-existent. The State Land Fund (SLF), an institution created in 1944 was for decades a substitute to land market. Originally, the Fund was responsible for the implementation of the land reform. After nationalization or confiscation of real estates, state farms...

Farmers' Evaluations and Behavioral Changes due to Attending Farm Transfer and Estate Planning Seminars AgEcon
Olson, Kent D.; Hachfeld, Gary.
The majority of farm families have not named a successor nor developed an up-to-date farm business transition and estate plan. This program effort was designed to enable these farm families gain a better understanding of the process required and thus develop and implement a farm transition and estate plan. In terms of improving understanding, the workshops were highly successful. Most of the participants indicated their understanding of the main educational points of the workshop improved due to attending the workshop. Almost all indicated they better understood the need for clear goals and communication. Over 90% said they better understood the strategies available for use in a transfer plan; the importance of assessing the financial strength of the farm;...

Management, Conservation and Farming of Saltwater Crocodiles: An Australian Case Study of Sustainable Commercial Use AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Swarna Nantha, Hemanath.
Opinions differ about what types of policies are likely to be most effective in conserving wildlife species. For example, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) is based on the premise that curbing the commercial use of endangered species favours their conservation, whereas the Convention on Biological Diversity envisages the possibility that such use may contribute to the conservation of species. In Australia, as illustrated in the case of the saltwater crocodile, the governments of the Northern Territory and Western Australia have favoured the latter policy in recent years whereas Queensland has favoured the former approach. The saltwater crocodile management plan of the Northern Territory provides an...

Making rural households’ livelihoods more resilient. The importance of social capital and the underlying social networks. AgEcon
Buchenrieder, Gertrud; Dufhues, Thomas; Beuchelt, Tina; Fischer, Isabel; Fritzsch, Jana; Wolz, Axel; Reinsberg, Klaus; Kasarjyan, Milada; Korff, Rudiger.
Although interest in the structure and relational features of social capital and its underlying networks has grown since the early 1990s, the terms do not embody any ideas that are really new to sociologists, but are indeed rather new to economists. Until the 1950s, land, labour, and financial capital (i.e., levels of investment) were seen as being relevant for economic growth. Then technology (physical capital) was added to the list. In the early 1960s, convincing empirical evidence showed that labour without know-how and entrepreneurial skills (human capital) limit the potential of the other production factors. Today, labour and skills are usually simultaneously addressed when talking of human capital. In development economics, and more recently in...

The Economics of Manure Utilization: Model and Application AgEcon
Keplinger, Keith O.; Hauck, Larry M..
A model of manure utilization is developed and applied to four types of transportable manure. Model results highlight important response differences among manure types and generally illustrate the diseconomies of manure production. For example, as manure production increases, manure value decreases and excess phosphate applications increase, thereby increasing the potential for phosphorus runoff. Policy scenarios limiting the manure application rate reduce manure value and excess phosphate application. Increasing the ratio of land using manure increases manure value while reducing excess phosphate application. Buildup of soil nutrients reduces manure value, but either increases or decreases excess phosphate application depending on the scenario.

Policy Reform in the Tobacco Industry: Producers Adapt to a Changing Market AgEcon
Foreman, Linda F.; McBride, William D..
The Fair and Equitable Tobacco Reform Act of 2004 eliminated tobacco quotas and tobacco price supports and allowed producers to plant any amount or type of tobacco regardless of geographic location. The authors found that flue-cured tobacco producers made greater adjustments to their operations after the buyout than did burley tobacco producers. Flue-cured tobacco producers were more likely to increase tobacco acres per farm, pushing up the tobacco acreage per farm at a faster rate compared with burley tobacco producers. Flue-cured producers also were more likely to invest in their tobacco enterprises and invested more per farm after 2004. As a result of increased acreage, tobacco operations became more sensitive to changes in labor costs. With over 75...
