Hepatic mRNA expression and plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in broiler chickens selected for different growth rates Genet. Mol. Biol.
Giachetto,Poliana Fernanda; Riedel,Eduardo Correa; Gabriel,Jane Eyre; Ferro,Maria Inês Tiraboschi; Di Mauro,Sônia Marli Zingaretti; Macari,Marcos; Ferro,Jesus Aparecido.
The hepatic expression and plasma concentrations of IGF-I were investigated in three broiler chicken strains selected for different growth rates (HP-Hubbard-Pettersen, a fast growing strain; NN-Naked-neck, a strain with an intermediate growth rate and a heterozygous genotype, and C-Caipira, a slow growing crossbred strain). The chickens were studied at 1, 21 and 42 days of age and had free access to food throughout the study. Hepatic IGF-I mRNA expression was assessed by dot blot analysis using a randomly labeled chicken IGF-I cDNA as the probe and plasma IGF-I concentrations were assayed by radioimmunoassay. The hepatic levels of IGF-I mRNA increased from 1 to 21 days of age in all strains, with NN chickens showing a higher (p < 0.05) IGF-I expression...

Phenotype plasticity, local adaptation, and biofouling influence on growth of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera: A common garden approach ArchiMer
Hulot, V.; Saulnier, Denis; Latchere, O.; Maihota, N.; Gaertner-mazouni, N..
The purpose of our study is to investigate (1) the influence of phenotype plasticity and local adaptation on pearl-oyster physiology by testing the persistence of growth differentiation of two pearl oyster populations (Arutua and Mangareva) in common garden experiment; (2) to quantify the influence of biofouling development on the growth of each pearl oyster population. According to our observations, the growth rate in terms of total oyster weight suggested better growth performance of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in Mangareva (0.21–0.24 ± 0.01 g.day−1) than Arutua (0.14–0.15 ± 0.01 g.day−1). However, similar growth performances are observed at the Vairao common garden site for oyster stocks from Mangareva (0.07 ± 0.01 mm.day−1 or...

Growth Performance Comparison of Pinctada margaritifera Juveniles Produced by Thermal Shock or Gonad Scarification Spawning Procedures ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Lau, Christophe; Sham Koua, Manaarii; Lo, Cedrik.
The black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera is of high economic importance in French Polynesia. Arecent decline in pearl value led to the initiation of several genetic breeding programs aiming to improve production traits, including oyster shell growth, which dictates the time of grafting, size of the implanted nuclei, and biomineralization capacities. We assessed shell diameters on hatchery-produced spat to analyze juvenile growth performance of four half-sib families derived from polyandry (one dam crossed with two sires) and polygyny (two dams crossed with one sire) using gametes obtained by thermal shock or gonad scarification. Spat growth was monitored over 3 mo, with shell diameter measured weekly. Results revealed that the spawning method...

Shell Growth Performance of Hatchery Produced Pinctada margaritifera: Family Effect and Relation with Cultured Pearl Weight ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Le Moullac, Gilles.
Size is the most important and valuable quality trait of cultured pearls produced by the black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. In French Polynesia, several breeding programmes have been started that aim to improve this size trait, which is highly related to shell growth rate in both recipient and donor oysters. Shell growth rate dictates the time of grafting, size of implanted nuclei and bio-mineralisation potential of the mantle and pearl sac. We assessed shell growth rate through routine digital shell biometric analysis on 22 hatchery families produced between 2005 and 2008. These included full-sib families and half-sib families derived from polyandry (one dam crossed with two or more sires). Results showed that: 1) a significant family...

Company, Rubén; Calduch Giner, Josep; Perez Sanchez, Jaume; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). The initial body weights were 8.2, 11.6 and 17.3 g for common dentex, sea bass and sea bream, respectively. In all cases, specific growth rates were not significantly affected by dietary treatment, but they varied among species (sea bass 1.7-1.8 %; sea bream 2.1-2.3 %; common dentex 3.1-3.2 %). When comparisons between...
