Employment and the Rural Recession: Context and Spatial Variation of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Spending AgEcon
Marre, Alexander W.; Pender, John L.; Monchuk, Daniel C..
In December 2007 the U.S. economy entered a depression and unemployment surged to highs not seen in 30 years. The first part of this paper uses the most recently available data from BLS to examine the geography of the recession. We focus on the similarities and differences in the recession’s impact on nonmetropolitan and metropolitan counties, and counties with different economic and demographic characteristics. The second part looks at the Federal response to the recession in the form of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Using publicly available data, we explore how these funds are being allocated across rural and urban counties and county classifications, and the potential implications of these funds on local rural labor markets and...

The Gender and Generational Consequences of the Demographic Transition and Population Policy: An Assessment of the Micro and Macro Linkages AgEcon
Schultz, T. Paul.
The demographic transition changes the age composition of a population, affecting resource allocations at the household and aggregate level. If age profiles of income, consumption, savings and investments were stable and estimable for the entire population, they might suggest how the demographic transition would affects inputs to growth. However, existing macro and micro simulations are estimated from unrepresentative samples of wage earners that do not distinguish sex, schooling, etc. The “demographic dividend” is better evaluated through case studies of household surveys and long-run social experiments. Matlab, Bangladesh, extended a family planning and maternal and child health program to half the villages in its district in 1977, and recorded...

Closing the Gender Gap in Bangladesh: Inequality in Education, Employment and Earnings AgEcon
Mohammad, Hossain; Tisdell, Clement A..
Assesses the status of women in Bangladesh by analysing the dynamics of female participation in labour force and education as well as gender earnings differentials at the macro level. The study finds evidence of growing commercialisation of women’s work in Bangladesh. Although the bulk of the female labour force is engaged in self-employment activities in the rural area or in low-skilled textile and readymade garment industries in the urban area, women’s participation in high-skill and entrepreneurial jobs as well as various decision-making bodies is also on the rise. While the gender wage differentials have been considerably reduced in many industries, in general women tend to be paid less than men. There have been remarkable improvements in women’s...

Labour Demand and Labour-saving Options: A Case of Groundnut Crop in India AgEcon
Govindaraj, G.; Mishra, A.P..
Groundnut is a labour-intensive crop, especially for operations like sowing, weeding, harvesting, and drying. But, of-late, due to timely unavailability of labour, many farmers are not able to exercise timely operations resulting in low yield realization. The present study conducted in two major groundnut-growing states, viz. Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, has revealed that farmers employ more human labour in weeding and harvesting operations in groundnut than in other operations. The practise of manual decortication and stripping is followed by a larger number of farmers in Andhra Pradesh than in Gujarat, indicating less mechanization in the former. For weeding, though, the human labour-use in weedicide + bullock intercultivation + hand weeding technique is...

Trabalho, terra e geração de renda em três décadas de reflorestamentos no alto Jequitinhonha AgEcon
Calixto, Juliana Sena; Ribeiro, Eduardo Magalhaes; Galizoni, Flavia Maria; Macedo, Renato Luis Grisi.
Beginning in the 1970’s the plateaus of Alto Jequitinhonha, northeast of Minas Gerais, until then areas of common use by family farmers, were planted with eucalyptus. This article analyzes the effects of reforestation on land occupation, comparing it with the areas of the family production. It is carried out in the homogenous micro-region of Capelinha, an area with the largest concentration of eucalyptus in the region. Secondary data from the IBGE Census for the years 1970, 1980, 1985 and 1996 were used, and also secondary data from surveys conducted around the region studied, including interviews with management of companies and union leadership. The article concludes that, in thirty years, the reforestation concentrated the land and created reduced...

Food Security and Efficacy of the Intervention Mechanism in India AgEcon
Prahadeeswaran, M.; Ramasamy, C.; Selvaraj, K.N..
Rice and wheat are the two major foodgrains in India and their level of production determines the country self-sufficient. Forecasts on cereals supply range from 250 to over 300 million tones in the country by the year 2020. Mere availability of foodgrains is not a sufficient condition to ensure food security but also necessary that the poor have sufficient means to purchase food. Poor economic access leads to food security and it has been checked by the government mechanism through the operation of Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and foodgrains are distributed at subsidized prices to the people living Below Poverty Line (BPL). It is a safety net to more than 330 million poor and those nutritionally at risk and an important delivery channel with...

Empleo femenino y su efecto sobre la distribución de la renta familiar en el medio rural AgEcon
Vera-Toscano, Esperanza; Moyano-Estrada, Eduardo.

Off-farm Employment and Food Consumption at Home and away from Home: Evidence from Farm Households in Taiwan AgEcon
Chang, Hung-Hao; Yen, Steven T..
A body of literature has addressed off-farm work by the farm household, but little is known about the association between off-farm work and food consumption. This paper investigates the extent to which off-farm employment by the farm operator and the spouse affects food expenditures at home and away from home. A dual treatment effect model is developed to estimate a simultaneous equation system of four food categories consumed at home and aggregate food away from home, with binary endogenous off-farm employment by the operator and spouse. Off-farm employment by farm operator and spouse both increase food expenditure away from home, while operator’s off-farm employment decreases staple food consumption at home. Socio-demographic characteristics also play...

Does Common Agricultural Policy Reduce Farm Labour Migration? A Panel Data Analysis Across EU Regions AgEcon
Olper, Alessandro; Raimondi, Valentina; Cavicchioli, Daniele; Vigani, Mauro.
This paper deals with the determinants of labour out-migration from agriculture across 153 EU regions over the 1990-2008 period. The central aim is to shed light on the role played by CAP payments on this important adjustment process. Using static and dynamic panel data methods, we show that standard neo-classic drivers, like the relative income and the relative labour share, represented significant determinants of the inter-sectoral migration of the agricultural labour. Overall, CAP payments have contributed significantly to job creation in agriculture, although the magnitude of the economic effect is quite small. Moreover, Pillar I subsidies have exerted an effect from three to five times stronger than Pillar II payments.

The impacts of mobile phone coverage expansion and personal networks on migration: evidence from Uganda AgEcon
Muto, Megumi.
Personal networks can help rural workers find urban jobs. Moreover, when the information flow increases due to the mobile phone coverage expansion, the new information flow may strengthen the existing personal networks or bypass them, helping those who were previously outside the networks in the latter case. We examine the combined impact of mobile phone coverage expansion and personal networks by using panel data of 856 households in 94 communities in rural Uganda, where the number of communities covered by mobile phone coverage increased from 41 to 87 communities over a two-year period between first and second surveys in 2003 and 2005, respectively. We first find that, when the household head’s ethnicity belongs to a larger ethnic group in Kampala, an...
