Coastal fisheries and marine cultures developed under strong biological, economical and social constraints. Among others are limitation of space and resources, limited availibility of capital, hardship of work,... Industrial, urbanistic and touristic development add to these constraints in coastal areas. Coherent scheme for coastal fisheries management, capture and culture, is of an urgent need. In renewable resources and environnement economics, depletion and pollution resulting from common ownership have been the core of the theory about fisheries management. The chronology of Japanese coastal fisheries management system shows a different approach. In law and decision making, social and economic consequences of conflictual uses and of their regulation... |

Submerged tropical karst features were discovered in Nagura Bay on Ishigaki Island in the southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The coastal seafloor at depths shallower than similar to 130 m has been subjected to repeated and alternating subaerial erosion and sedimentation during periods of Quaternary sea-level lowstands. We conducted a broadband multibeam survey in the central area of Nagura Bay (1.85 x 2.7 km) and visualized the high-resolution bathymetric results over a depth range of 1.6-58.5 m. Various types of humid tropical karst landforms were found to coexist within the bay, including fluviokarst, doline karst, cockpit karst, polygonal karst, uvalas, and mega-dolines. Although these submerged karst landforms are covered by thick postglacial reef and... |

Women’s groups in rural fishery areas were established in the mid-1950s. By 1959, they became integrated in local Fishery Cooperative Associations as parallel organizations. These Fisheries Cooperative Associations, established in 1948, represent all fishers in Japan, who are primarily men. The purpose of the women’s groups was to provide well-being by improving the living conditions of families and communities. While men were busy building the production facilities and the cooperatives, women organized themselves to protect and improve the everyday life of families. From 1995 and the World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, some of these women groups ran economic entrepreneurial activities with the financial support of the State through the... |

Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a main target for the fisheries at Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) off the south of Okinawa island. Catch and weight composition of the tuna were monitored at a fisheries cooperative market from 1989 to 1998. Some distinct weight groups (considered to represent cohorts) appeared in the catch and the weight of these groups increased monthly - presumably as individual tuna grew. Although small, light weight fish were caught year-round, the 2 kg weight group that was recruited in May grew to about 15 kg by May of the next year. There was a significant seasonal cycle in the monthly catches. The catch of heavier weight groups decreased in winter indicating the tuna moved out of this FAD area. At one of huge FADs (Nirai),... |

After the four years of development of the modern maximum depth submersible, JAMSTEC has successfully completed the training dives of "SHINKAI 6500", a new manned submersible whose maximum operating depth is 6,500 meters, from June to October in this year. "SHINKAI 6500" was constructed by Kobe Shipyard and Machinary Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) and marked 6,465m and 6,527m dives in the Japan Trench during the sea trials with the support "YOKOSUKA" (built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.) in August 1989. This paper presents the results of the sea trials, training dives and the features of "SHINKAI 6500" with her supporting technologies. |

We investigated branched and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) in surface soils and a paleosol sequence to understand the effects of environmental and postdepositional factors on branched GDGT composition in different soil types and to reconstruct the past changes in the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) in southwestern Japan during the last 15 ka. The estimated MAAT was overestimated by 6 degrees C and 2 degrees C when the global and regional soil calibrations were applied, respectively. Additionally, the estimated MAAT increased downward by a maximum of 4 degrees C in the upper 30 cm of the soil sequence. This is likely to reflect the addition of newly produced branched GDGTs in subsurface soils. The estimated MAATs in a paleosol... |

A redescription of Zetorchestes saltator Oudemans, 1915 is given. In addition to that, two new Zetorchestes-species from New Guinea (Z. novaguineanus spec. nov., Z. vanderhammeni spec. nov.) and one new species from Japan (Z. aokii spec. nov.) are described in this paper. These four and some other similar species are compared in table 1. In the redescription and the descriptions attention is paid to the intraspecific morphological variability of body size, the shape of the anterior edge of the lamella, the position of the notogastric hair la, the number of the notogastric hairs, the number and position of the genital, anal and adanal hairs, and the shape of the edge of the lamella on femur II. It seems likely that the Zetorchestes-species from New Guinea... |

The genus Stantonia Ashmead, 1904 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Orgilinae) is reviewed for Vietnam, China, Japan, and Russia. Six new species of the genus Stantonia are described and illustrated: Stantonia brevicaudata van Achterberg, sp. n., S. dickyyui van Achterberg & Long, sp. n., S. granulata Long & van Achterberg, sp. n., S. robustifemur van Achterberg & Long, sp. n., S. stilpnosoma Long & van Achterberg, sp. n., and S. vietnamica van Achterberg, sp. n. A new subgenus (Planitonia subg. n.: type species Stantonia robustifemur van Achterberg & Long, sp. n.) is proposed for the species with a flat clypeus and face, and reduced vein r-m of the fore wing. Three species are newly recorded from Vietnam: Stantonia gracilis van Achterberg,... |

The species of the genus Syntretus Foerster, 1862 (including Falcosyntretus Tobias, 1965, and Exosyntretrus Belokobylskij, 1998) (Braconidae: Euphorinae; Syntretini) from Europe are revised and keyed. The genera Falcosyntretus Tobias, 1965, Exosyntretus Belokobylskij, 1998, and Parasyntretus Belokobylskij, 1993, are synonymised with Syntretus Foerster, 1862, and the second one is provisionally used as a subgenus (stat. rev.). The subgenus Exosyntretrus is reported for the first time from Europe and two new species are included. In total twenty species of the genus Syntretus Foerster are recognised (plus one species only known from literature: Syntretus dzieduszykii Niezabitowski, 1910), of which ten are new: Syntretus breviradialis spec. nov., S. flevo... |

We record the discovery of Coleia Broderip (Eryonoidea: Coleiidae) from the Nakatsuka Formation, Mine Group, Upper Triassic of Japan. The specimens were collected from shales exposed at Tsubuta, Sanyo-cho (Yamaguchi Prefecture). Coleia co-occurs there with fragments of a penaeoid, bivalves, Halobia spp., ammonites, and plants. |
