Duration of the pre-settlement period of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Decapoda: Ocypodidae) under laboratory conditions BABT

The goal of the present study was to determine the most appropriate time to release the immatures of Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus) produced in the laboratory into the natural environments. Specifically, the time when the megalopae sought the mangrove sediment to excavate the burrows was determined, as well as the time necessary for their metamorphosis into the first juvenile stage. Results indicated that the megalopae of U. cordatus reared in the laboratory took three to ten days (median = 6) after their molt to excavated burrows in the sediment. The average time for the megalopae to molt into juveniles was 12.6 days (SD = 2.3).

Juvenile production of the reshwater prawn Cryphiops caementarius (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) under laboratory conditions in Coquimbo, Chile Gayana

Two culture experiments from 1995 until 1997 were carried out with larvae obtained from gravid females of Cryphiops caementarius (Molina 1782), to define a methodology in order to produce juvenile using controlled conditions of water temperature, salinity and feeding. Time in culture of larval development and the survival rate were determined. Two distinct types of culture systems were studied. Both systems incorporated a standard alimentation using nauplius of Artemia sp. plus microalgae; however the second system included, in addition, a supplement of fish and chiken eggs. Ritmo de alimentação de juvenis de Loricariichthys anus (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) da Lagoa dos Quadros, RS, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

The rhythm of movements and feeding activity of juveniles of Loricariichthys anus (Valenciennes, 1840) in the Quadros lake, South Brazil, are investigated. Between October 1997 and August 1998, 236 specimens were captured during six bimonthly 24 hour gillnet surveys. Significantly elevated levels of movement and feeding activity during the day are registered. The patterns of movement and feeding activity displayed no significant difference, suggesting that high movement activity levels can be attributed to feeding activity. Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. Identification of skipjack tuna juveniles based on DNA control region sequences and potential spawning area around reunion island ArchiMer

In this study, we confirmed that DNA control region can be used to identify potential spawning area from pelagic juveniles species. We used the mitochondrial DNA control region to identify tuna juveniles predated by common dolphinfish and sampled in surface waters around Reunion Island. These were skipjack juveniles at an early stage (small length and young age). The biological results confirmed the species identification based on DNA analysis. Comparison of Solea solea macroparasites between two nursery-continental shelf systems in the Bay of Biscay and the Portuguese coast ArchiMer

Digenean metacercariae of 0 year group common sole Solea solea (n = 70) were more abundant in the embayed nursery of the Pertuis Charentais than in the Tagus estuary nursery. Macroparasite assemblages of adult sole (n = 119) displayed only one species in common between the Bay of Biscay and the Portuguese coast continental shelves. These data highlighted the potential use of macroparasites as biological tags in various aspects of common sole ecology. (C) 2007 The Authors.

For the analysis of spider crab populations it is necessary to split the size composition by sex and between age groups, and to convert length to weight. In some cases different length measurements need to be correlated in order to compare the results from different authors. Morphometricaly it is easy to use the abdominal flap to distinguish between male and female, and between immature and adult females, but for immature and adult males it is necessary to use Somertons method to analyse the relation between carapace length and claw width. The Paracentrotus lividus populations from the northern Moroccan Atlantic coast: growth, reproduction and health condition ArchiMer

The condition of three intertidal Paracentrotus lividus populations, which inhabit an area between Rabat and Casablanca (Morocco) known by its high wave energy and its substantial anthropogenic disturbances were described. The growth rate of the juvenile sea urchins in this intertidal zone was low compared with more sheltered populations. A sharp increase in the gonad index was observed between January and March at the beginning of a period of algal production, and was concomitant with increases in seawater temperature and food consumption rate. The French brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) fishery employs on a seasonal basis around 140 ships about 10 metres in length and with engines of about 100 kilowatts of power. It takes place mainly along the coastal bottoms of silted-up sand at a depth of 2 to 10 metres and occupies principally the coasts of the eastern English Channel and those of the Gulf of Gascony. The brown shrimp catch is performed by bottom trawl, with exempted meshing of 20 mm (stretched mesh), which causes numerous rejects of immature fish that live on the same bottoms. Impact of intensive larval rearing practices in oyster hatcheries : selective processes and loss of genetic variability (Poster) ArchiMer

Early-life history of oysters, like in most marine bivalves, is characterized by high fecundity and low survival rate. In hatcheries, which are ecoming more and more important for the production of juveniles for aquaculture production, rearing conditions are optimised (density, feeding, temperature...), and contrast with those observed in the wild. Additionally, slow growing larvae are culled by sieving.

Summer mortality of selected juvenile pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas under laboratory conditions and in comparison with field performance ArchiMer

This study reports mortality under laboratory conditions in unselected controls and two lines of juvenile Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas, previously selected for their high or low survival in the field during the summer period. Oysters were also deployed in field conditions and mortality between both conditions was then compared. In the laboratory, mortality was observed in all experiments and it always lasted for a week indicating that mortality under laboratory conditions was a short-term event. It was also shown that mortality could be repeated for a batch in several experiments using oysters which never experienced any abnormal mortality. A shortcut method for sexing juvenile European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L. ArchiMer

The objective of this study was to develop a rapid and effective method of sexing juvenile sea bass with minimum labour and material. To this end, the gonad squash mount technique was applied along with macroscopic techniques for sexing a large number of experimental fish at the age of 215-275 days post fertilization (p.f.). At this age, 90% of the 3894 fish could be unambiguously sexed by macroscopic examination of their gonads, whereas the remaining proportion was identified using squash mount preparations (10%). In order to study genetic variability for survival during summer mortality events in the oyster Crassostrea gigas, a first generation (G1) was bred in 2001. 17 G1 half-sib families (HSF) were obtained ; each HSF was reared in three sites along the French coast during the summer period. Significant differences in survival were observed among HSF indicating a genetic basis for survival. In 2002, several HSF were selected on their survival performances to constitute a divergent selection (G2) (outbreed and inbred). Significant differences in survival were found among these offspring of the 'high' and 'low' selected groups in several laboratory experiments and in all sites. Energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae fed on animal or vegetable protein based compounded feeds ArchiMer

L. vannamei postlarvae are normally raised with a protein dense diet (50% protein) rich in fishmeal. Part of the protein is utilized for energy purpose instead of protein synthesis. Based on a previous energy partitioning study, the effects of two isoenergetic compounded feed treatments - animal protein (AP) and vegetable protein and carbohydrates (VPC) - upon growth efficiency and energy budget of shrimp postlarvae and early juveniles were determined.
