Silva,Laura A; Siles,Laura; Cardona,Luis; Tavares,Mauricio; Crespo,Enrique; Gandini,Patricia.

Buccal apparatus and gastrointestinal tract dimensions associated to the diet of early life stages of Centropomus undecimalis (Centropomidae, Actinopterygii) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Araújo,Isabela M. S; Silva-Falcão,Elisabeth C; Severi,William.
The present study aims to compare the buccal apparatus and gastrointestinal tract of early life stages of Centropomus undecimalis (Bloch, 1792), and relate them to its diet. A total of 190 individuals collected with a channel net in the Catuama estuary (07º40'9.9''S, 34º50'36.7''W), northern coast of the state of Pernambuco, were examined. Morphometrical and meristic data were analyzed for the two initial developmental periods (larval and juvenile). Their digestive tube was morphologically characterized and its content identified. The longest transverse axis of food items was measured, and compared to the standard length (SL) and mouth gape size (D) of the individuals. Body measurement regressions differed significantly (p<0.001) between larvae and...

Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Vitamin requirements of juvenile penaeid shrimp ArchiMer
Conklin, D.
The results of supplementing crustacean feeds with vitamins are examined specifically from the standpoint of shrimp culture. Micro-nutrients selected for discussion include: water-soluble vitamins of the B-complex, choline and inositol, vitamin C and the fat-soluble group of vitamins: A, D, E and K. Ways in which utilization of vitamins and ultimately dietary demand are altered by physiological state, conditions of culture, as well as factors which impact on feed levels, are explored.

Genetic structure of the common sole (Solea solea) in the Bay of Biscay: Nurseries as units of selection? ArchiMer
Guinand, B; Rolland, Jean-luc; Bonhomme, Francois.
Coastal and estuarine areas in the Bay of Biscay are essential nursery habitats for sole (Solea solea). Using three intronic markers, we investigated patterns of genetic differentiation among cohorts of juveniles (0+, 1+, sub-adults) inhabiting four major nurseries in the Vilaine and Loire river estuaries, the Pertuis d' Antioche strait, and the Gironde estuary. Genetic differentiation was not significant for the age 0- and 1-groups, but was among sub-adult samples (theta(WC) = 0.017; P = 0.031). Hierarchical analyses of genotypic frequencies by nested multivariate ANOVA using redundancy analysis indicated that northern nurseries of Loire and Vilaine rivers had different patterns of genotypic variation with age than southern nurseries of the Pertuis d'...

Duval, P.
This study has two objectives: (1) the knowledge of spatial and temporal characteristics of flat fish nursery grounds, and, (2) the determination of natural or man-induced factors affecting these nurseries: hydrodynamics, sediment properties, predation, competition, water quality, pollution. To protect these grounds the author proposes a fisheries management plan and an impact study before all port installations or all coastal equipment use.

Verin, Yves.
Since 1976, France participates to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), coordinated by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The main objective of these surveys, which are carried out on board of research vessels, was to obtain annual forecasts of recruitment for the various commercial fish species of the North Sea. These estimates were used by ICES Working Groups to assess these various stocks and to propose management measures for the following year. In addition, the data collected during these surveys concerned biological and abundance analysis of main commercial fish species exploited by European countries in the North Sea. The results of studies were published in scientific papers and have improved knowledge in this...

The nutritional requirements of the Japanese shrimp Penaeus japonicus ArchiMer
Guillaume, Julien.
Penaeus japonicus is probably the best known species among penaeids or even among shrimps. In juveniles, the protein requirement was best studied and Japanese shrimp appears as the most demanding penaeid species. They may be related to several factors such as energy level of the diet, digestibility or biological value of protein or other nutritional factors. The essential amino acids are well known, however from a quantitative point of view the requirements in each of these amino acids remain to be determined.

The Digestive Function of Pseudoplatystoma punctifer Early Juveniles Is Differentially Modulated by Dietary Protein, Lipid and Carbohydrate Content and Their Ratios ArchiMer
Castro-ruiz, Diana; Andree, Karl B.; Solovyev, Mikhail M.; Fernández-méndez, Christian; García-dávila, Carmen; Cahu, Chantal; Gisbert, Enric; Darias, Maria J..
Pseudoplatystoma punctifer is an Amazonian catfish highly appreciated for its high flesh quality, size, and commercial value. Its aquaculture is pursued to satisfy the demands of an increasing population in the region. However, knowledge of the nutritional needs during the early life stages is necessary for improving growth and reducing the incidence of cannibalism, factors that limit the success of its commercial farming. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of four diets containing different protein and lipid levels (30:15, 30:10, 45:15, or 45:10 in %) in the digestive physiology and performance of early juveniles. The results showed that the dietary protein:lipid as well as carbohydrate levels and ratios influenced differently the whole-body...

Digenean metacercariae parasites as natural tags of habitat use by 0-group common sole Solea solea in nearshore coastal areas: A case study in the embayed system of the Pertuis Charentais (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Begout, Marie-laure; Pinet, Patrick; Sasal, Pierre.
This study focused on the spatio-temporal variation in the host-parasite system, 0-group sole-digenean metacercariae, in nearshore coastal areas at relatively small spatial scale. 0-group soles were sampled using a standard beam trawl in April, May, June, August and October 2005 at nine different sites in the Pertuis Charentais area (Bay of Biscay, France). Sole density, size, Fulton's condition factor K and digenean metacercariae communities were analysed. 0-group sole concentrated in shallow and muddy areas where they accumulated digenean metacercariae. Parasite communities displayed strong spatial patterns tightly linked to the distribution of the first intermediate mollusc hosts. These parasitological data suggest that 0-group sole during their first...

Robert, Rene; Maurer, Daniele.
A new method of oyster cultivation, the Stanway oyster cylinder, has been experimented in the basin of Arcachon since the autumn of 1989. The first observations on three species of juvenile bivalves showed that this system could be successfully used with the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas . A comparative study of the growth of this last species, reared in cylinders and oyster bags, has been carried out since spring 1990. The first results showed that the growth of juveniles and 18 months old oysters in cylinders is not as good as in bags. On the other hand, mortality did not differ between both techniques: less than 3%. This new system seems to be less efficient than the traditional French way of rearing oysters. However, an improvement in the quality...

Some aspects of the abnormal mortalities of the pearl oysters, Pinctada margaritifera in the Tuamotu Archipelago, (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Cabral, P.
The black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera lives and reproduces with high performance in most of Tuamotu Lagoons. Technics to collect spats, to culture juveniles and to operate oysters were quickly found and applicated. Nevertheless, the sudden rise of this activity has been correlated with an anarchic development. For instance, large occupation of areas in the lagoons, cultivation of numerous oysters in confined areas, lack of knowledge on the basis culture technics in many farms. In 1985, mass mortalities have appeared in some lagoons and 50 to 80% of cultured stock died. Some investigations have been done but no explanation was found. In 1988, the mortalities are still very high. An analysis of cooperative production results from 1979 to 1988...

Fantastically plastic: fish larvae equipped for a new world ArchiMer
Pittman, Karin; Yufera, Manuel; Pavlidis, Michail; Geffen, Audrey J.; Koven, Willian; Ribeiro, Laura; Zambonino, Jose Luiz; Tandler, Amos.
Teleost fish are more diverse than any other vertebrate group, and yet only a limited number of species are fished and farmed globally. Efforts to expand the quantity and diversity of fish produced are hampered by the extreme diversity of ontogenetic responses of fish, especially during larval development. This review looks at advances in molecular phylogeny, endocrine and nutrient influences and long-term studies of the phenotypes of commercially important fish to put the sources and consequences of this plasticity into context. This nested context of evolutionary forces of the fish-specific genome duplication, epigenetic influences, ontogenetically conserved processes like metamorphosis and cell determination is further presented in relation to how fish...

Anthouard, M; Paris, J.
Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood.

Summer mortality of hatchery-produced Pacific oyster spat (Crassostrea gigas). II. Response to selection for survival and its influence on growth and yield ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Bedier, Edouard; Boudry, Pierre.
Response to divergent selection for "high" and "low" survival during the summer period, from July to October, was investigated in juvenile (six-month-old) Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, by producing two sets of progenies in 2002 (Generation 2) and three sets of progenies in 2003 (Generation 3). A strict between-family approach was used and resistance of these selected progenies to summer mortality was assessed in three sites along French coasts, to determine their response to selection and estimate realized heritability of the trait. A significant difference in survival was observed between the "high" and "low" selected groups at all sites for all sets of progenies, indicating a significant genetic component. High realized heritabilities for survival...

Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Dietary sources for growth may be necessary due to losses during moltings.
