Rice farmer’s poverty and its determinants: evidence from Dogofiri village of Office du Niger zone in Mali Ciência Rural
Coulibaly,Brahima; Li,Shixiang; Wang,Zhanqi.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this research was to contribute to a better understanding of rice farmer’s poverty of Office du Niger (ON) in Mali at village-level. Data were collected through survey with 110 head family farms in the village of Dogofiri. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the main determinants of poverty. Results indicated that the factors of physical capital and human capital as well as government policy have a significant influence on the poverty of family farms through production, age, family size, education and health support, agricultural credit and water fees. Policies aimed to improve the family farm’s income and boosting rice production to alleviate poverty...

Of Models and Meanings: Cultural Resilience in Social–Ecological Systems Ecology and Society
Crane, Todd A.; Technology and Agrarian Development, Wageningen University; todd.crane@wur.nl.
Modeling has emerged as a key technology in analysis of social–ecological systems. However, the tendency for modeling to focus on the mechanistic materiality of biophysical systems obscures the diversity of performative social behaviors and normative cultural positions of actors within the modeled system. The fact that changes in the biophysical system can be culturally constructed in different ways means that the perception and pursuit of adaptive pathways can be highly variable. Furthermore, the adoption of biophysically resilient livelihoods can occur under conditions that are subjectively experienced as the radical transformation of cultural systems. The objectives of this work are to: (1) highlight the importance of understanding the place...

Dangerous scorpion fauna of Mali J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Goyffon,M; Dabo,A; Coulibaly,SK; Togo,G; Chippaux,JP.
Although the main Malian scorpion species of medical interest, Androctonus amoreuxi, is responsible for severe envenomings and perhaps some deaths, it has hitherto been considered not dangerous for humans. This population is located in the Saharian North-Eastern regions of Mali where it is accompanied by Leiurus quinquestriatus, a well known dangerous species of the Sahara. In the Gao district, divided by the Niger River, less desolate than the Tessalit and Kidal regions, one specimen of the dangerous species Androctonus australis was found. To summarize, Mali harbors at least three dangerous scorpion species: Leiurus quinquestriatus, Androctonus amoreuxi and A. australis, the latter recently having been identified in Mali for the first time. The absence...

The impact of participation in Diversity Field Fora on farmer management of millet and sorghum varieties in Mali AgEcon
Smale, Melinda; Diakite, Lamissa; Sidibe, Amadou; Grum, Mikkel; Jones, Hannah; Traore, Issa Seni; Guindo, Hamidou.
Malian farmers have been cultivating millet and sorghum for millennia, but they are slow to adopt and develop modern varieties because it is difficult to observe the difference in yields in their fields, given the challenging local growing conditions. Farmer participatory approaches are therefore recommended. This paper applies an instrumental variables method to survey data from Mali to evaluate the impacts of Diversity Field Fora, a type of farmer field school which aims to boost millet and sorghum yields by showing farmers how to manage diverse varieties. Impact indicators are expected and recalled millet and sorghum yields, the total number of unique attributes of millet and sorghum varieties stocked as seed, and the relative deprivation of the...

Analysis of the Constraints to the Development of a Domestic Improved Seed Potato Industry in Mali AgEcon
Diallo, Marthe.
This paper outlines proposed research, using concepts of New Institutional Economics, to identify the factors constraining the emergence of a market for domestically produced improved seed potatoes in Mali. It uses the Principal –Agent model to outline how to investigate the feasibility of developing a domestic seed potato industry in Mali by applying the concepts of efficient contract designs and other institutional arrangements. This research will contribute to the literature on: (a) contract and institutional design in the context of asymmetric information and uncertainty typical of agricultural markets in low-income countries and (b) design of improved seed production systems, particularly for clonal crops, in developing countries. The Malian potato...

De fortes baisses des prix des céréales sèches en perspectives AgEcon
Diarra, Salifou Bakary.
The 2006 – 2007 agricultural campaign was characterized by a good rainfall. As a result, cereal production has increased according to the survey conducted by CPS/DNSI.. The prices of cereals reflect this increase in production. To keep producers from selling their products at lower prices, it is recommended to constitute the national food security stock and cereal banks at commune level in December 2006, lift measures forbidding the exports of cereals, and put in place overdraft facilities for producers and traders for cereals storage.

Perspectives d’évolution des marches céréaliers pour la campagne de commercialisation 2005/06 AgEcon
Diarra, Salifou Bakary; Dembele, Niama Nango.
The 2005 – 2006 marketing campaign was difficult because of the drought that occurred in all countries in the region. As a result, the price of sorghum, millet, maize and rice soared. State actions to improve cereals supply through tax-exempt rice imports did not achieve the expected outcomes. Rice has been the main contributing factor to the rise of cereals price. The low levels of stocks of rice in the world and the supply in fertilizers below expectations along with a decrease in productivity have contributed to the rise of rice prices at the national level.

The Role of Institutional Environments on Technical Efficiency: A Comparative Stochastic Frontier Analysis of Cotton Farmers in Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali AgEcon
Theriault, Veronique.
This paper examines the role of institutional environments on cotton farmer technical efficiency scores in Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali using a stochastic frontier production approach. First, the key institutional changes that have occurred with the recent market-oriented reforms are discussed. Then, farm efficiency per country is measured using cross-sectional data collected by the Cotton Sector Reform Project of the Africa, Power, and Politics Programme in 2009. Results from a one-stage estimation procedure suggest that while no technical inefficiency exists in Benin, an average technical efficiency of 69% and 46% is found in Burkina Faso and Mali, respectively. Agricultural development policies focusing on reducing the inefficiency at the farm level in...

Cotton Price Policy and New Cereal Technology in the Malian Cotton Zone AgEcon
Coulibaly, Jeanne Y.; Sanders, John H.; Preckel, Paul V.; Baker, Timothy G..
During the last decade, cotton production and area have been declining as a result of depleting soil nutrients and low cotton prices in the cotton zone of Mali. This paper shows that the Malian government’s 2011 policy to increase the farm gate cotton price as a response to world cotton price increase enhances farm income but has less impact on cotton than on maize production. A complementary policy of introducing new sorghum technologies would have an equal impact on farmers’ incomes in the cotton zone of Mali.

Situation Synthétique de la CMDT AgEcon
Dembele, Niama Nango; Traore, Abdramane.
This note presents the situation of the Malian cotton sector as of 2001/02, with emphasis on the possibility of emerging from the crisis at that time. ] The CMDT, the Malian company for textile development, has as its mission the production, storage, and marketing of cotton. Despite excellent performance over the years, CMDT was faced by a major crisis in 1999/2000 which has persisted. Cotton is very important to the Malian economy. The area of the cotton zone is about 163,303 km2, and included a population of about 3.8 million in 2000. Income from cotton was 96.5 billion CFA francs in 1998/99. However, since the 1999/00 campaign, the producers’ income decreased, falling to 41.3 billion CFA francs in 2000/01. Since the devaluation of the CFA franc in...
