Cracks often occur when nano-hydroxyapatite bone scaffolds are fabricated with selective laser sintering, which affect the performance of scaffolds. In this study, a small amount of poly (l-lactide acid) (PLLA) was added into nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HAP) powder by mechanical blending in order to improve the sintering properties. The nano-HAP powder combined with 1wt % PLLA was sintered under different laser power (5W, 7.5W, 10W, 12.5W, 15W and 20W). The fabricated scaffolds were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Micro Hardness Tester. The results showed that nano-HAP particles grew up quickly with the laser power increasing, and there were many strip-like... |

High pressure is an innovative non-thermal food-preservation technology. We studied the effect of high-pressure treatment up-to 500 MPa for 5 min on physical characteristics of sea bass fillets after 0, 7, and 14 d of refrigerated storage.. Color results exhibited an increase of lightness and a slight change of hue, which might be imperceptible in cooked fish. High-pressure treatment induced a decrease of exudation and water-holding capacity Pressure treatment above 300 MPa provoked higher fish hardness after storage than in untreated sample, proving the ability of high pressure to improve textural, quality of chilled, stored fish fillet. These assessments were corroborated with microstructure observations. We showed that high-pressure treatment at 500 MPa... |

In the present paper, juvenile and adult shells of the green ormer Haliotis tuberculata ('Oreille de Saint-Pierre') were perforated in a zone close to the shell edge and the shell repair process was followed at two levels: (1) by observing the histology of the calcifying mantle in the repair zone and (2) by analyzing with SEM the microstructure of the shell repair zone. Histological data clearly show the presence of calcium carbonate granules into the connective tissues, but not in the epithelial cells. This suggests that calcium carbonate granules are synthesized by sub-epithelial cells and actively transported through the epithelium to the repair zone, via a process which may be similar to that described by Mount et al. [Mount, A.S., Wheeler, A.P.,... |

The high spatial resolution analysis of the mineral and organic composition of otoliths using Raman micro-spectrometry involves rigorous protocols for sample preparation previously established for microchemistry and trace elements analyses. These protocols often include otolith embedding in chemically neutral resin (i.e., resins which do not contain, in detectable concentration, elements usually sought in the otoliths). Such embedding may however induce organic contamination. In this paper, Raman micro-spectrometry reveals the presence of organic contamination onto the surface obtained from the use of epoxy resin, specifically Araldite. This contamination level varies depending on otolith structures. Core and checks, known as structural discontinuities,... |

The solidification paths for UFeB4, UFe3B2 and UFe4B, ternary compounds, situated along the U:(Fe,B) = 1:5 line in the B-Fe-U phase diagram, are proposed based on x-ray powder diffraction measurements, differential thermal analysis, heating curves and scanning electron microscopy observations complemented with energy and wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopies. The compounds melt incongruently and are formed by peritectic reactions. The present work demonstrates the existence of a cascade of peritectic reactions along the U:(Fe,B) = 1:5 composition line, establishes peritectic temperatures and proposes an isopleth diagram along this line. |

Consistently classified among the references for calcite simple prisms, the microstructural units that form the outer layer of the Pinctada margaritifera have been investigated through a series of morphological, crystallographical and biochemical characterizations. It is often said that the polygonal transverse shape of the prisms result from the competition for space between adjacent crystals. In contrast to this classical scheme the Pinctada prisms appear to be composed of four successive developmental stages from the concentrically growing disks on the internal side of the periostracum to the morphological, structural and compositional changes in both envelopes and mineral components at the end of the prisms. These latest structural and compositional... |

The histology and the ultrastructure of the uterine glands of the lesser bushbaby (Galago senegalensis) were studied in six specimens (5 pregnant and one non pregnant) which were fixed partly with bouin's fixative and part with 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M cacodylate buffer. An overview of the main results revealed uterine glands in the non-pregnant uterus are rudimentary and scarce within the mucosa. In early pregnancy (first trimester) the uterine glands profiles appear in clusters. In late stage pregnancy (third trimester) the uterine gland profiles appear opposite chorionic vesicles. In the later stages of gestation maternal glandular epithelium consisted mainly of simple columnar epithelium. The cells had abundant flattened cisternae of granular... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to study the stability of powdered mango pulp obtained through the process of lyophilisation, as well as its structural characteristics using electron microscopy analysis. In response to an earlier experimental design using maltodextrin concentrations of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% and periods of 24 and 30 hours, the condition of 20% maltodextrin and 24 hours drying was chosen as the best for drying mango in a freeze dryer. The stability study was therefore carried out using powdered mango pulp obtained under the above best-drying conditions, stored for 90 days and monitored every two weeks by analysis of the moisture, ascorbic acid content, b* colorimetric parameter and hygroscopicity. Storage was at room temperature (27 °C) in... |

The crop-livestock system can promote soil compaction in surface layers, mainly due to animal trampling. However, plants and their root growth, in interaction with animal trampling, can decrease the deleterious changes in soil structure caused by this system. Up to the present time, the physical soil modifications in crop-livestock systems, including oat and ryegrass crops for winter animal forages are unknown. The objective of this study was to quantify and to relate tensile strength, friability and soil organic carbon in an Oxisol under a crop-livestock system. The study was conducted in Campo Mourão - Paraná, Brazil. Four forage heights were used for the winter forages: 7, 14, 21 and 28 cm. For each forage height, five soil blocks were randomly... |

The aim of this work was to manufacture the biodegradable nanocomposite films by extrusion from different combinations of cassava starch, xanthan gum and nanoclays (sodium montmorillonite - MMT- Na) and to characterize them according to their microstructure, optical, mechanical and barrier properties. Films were manufactured from nine starch/xanthan/nanoclay combinations, containing glycerol as plasticizer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the starch-xanthan extruded films showed reticulated surface and smooth interior, indicating that the gum was mostly concentrated on the surface of the films, while starch/xanthan/nanoclays films showed a more homogeneous surface, suggesting that the introduction of nanoclays provided a better biopolymeric... |

ABSTRACT: Sour cassava starch is a naturally modified starch produced by fermentation and sun drying, achieving the property of expansion upon baking. Sour cassava starch' bakery products can be prepared without the addition of yeast and it is gluten free. The fermentation process associated with this product has been well studied, but the wastewater, with high acidity and richness in other organic compounds derived from starch degradation, requires further investigation. In this study, the structure of solids present in this residue was studied, seeking to future applications for new materials. The solids of the wastewater were spray dried with maltodextrin (MD) with dextrose equivalent (DE) of 5 and 15 and the structure of the powder was evaluated by... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present research was to evaluate differences in chemical properties and physical structure of yoghurt produced with milk from different species (sheep, cow, and goat). For each trial, whole raw sheep (S), cow (C), and goat (G) milk were used to manufacture 4L of yoghurts (Y) from each species (SY, CY, and GY, respectively). The SY demonstrated the greatest (P<0.05) values of total solids, protein, and lipid contents, reflecting on greater (P<0.05) firmness, apparent viscosity and water-holding capacity, and lower (P<0.05) syneresis index than CY and GY. Consequently, SY exhibited a more compact microstructure and homogeneous matrix with fewer pores. Furthermore, CY and GY microstructure contained a greater number of... |
