Determination of diet in Manila clams by spatial analysis of stable isotopes ArchiMer
Dang, C.; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Savoye, N.; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Martinez, P.; Millaret, C.; Haure, Joel; De Montaudouin, X..
Spatial changes in the dietary regime of Ruditapes philippinarum from intertidal sediments of Arcachon Bay were depicted by analyzing stable isotope ratios in both its adductor muscles and potential trophic sources. Manila clams were collected from 50 sites in May to June 2006. Dietary reconstruction was based on the IsoSource mixing model, considering trophic enrichments of 3.5%. for carbon and 3.0%. for nitrogen, which were determined experimentally. delta C-13 and delta N-15 values, respectively, averaged -28.2 and 5.2 parts per thousand for riverine particulate organic matter (POM), -20.6 and 4.7 parts per thousand for inner bay phytoplankton, -21.0 and 5.6%. for outer bay phytoplankton, -16.8 and 4.8 parts per thousand. for microphytobenthos, -18.4...

Total replacement of fish oil by soybean or linseed oil with a return to fish oil in turbot (Psetta maxima) - 1. Growth performance, flesh fatty acid profile, and lipid metabolism ArchiMer
Regost, Christelle; Arzel, Jacqueline; Robin, Jean; Rosenlund, Grethe; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The aim of the study was to investigate the replacement of fish oil by vegetable oils and the effects of a washout with a return to fish oil on growth performances and lipid metabolism. three experimental fish meal-based isonitrogenous (crude protein content: 57.5%) and isolipidic (crude lipid content: 16.5%) diets were formulated containing either 9% of added fish oil (170), soybean oil (SO), or linseed oil (LO). Each diet was distributed to triplicate groups of 25 marketable size turbot (initial body weight of 579 g) grown in seawater at water temperature of 17 T. Fish were fed once a day to visual satiety. At the end of the growth trial, which lasted 13 weeks, all groups of turbot were fed with FO diet for 8 weeks. The growth of turbot was high, but the...

AMP-deaminase in elasmobranch fish: A comparative histochemical and enzymatic study ArchiMer
Thebault, Marie-t; Izem, Lahoucine; Leroy, Jean Paul; Gobin, Eric; Charrier, Gregory; Raffin, Jean-paul.
AMP-deaminase activity was measured in white muscle from a wide range of fish, including one cyclostome, 13 chondrosteans, and one teleost to elucidate the pattern of the AMP-deaminase activity in white muscle of fish. Compared to a mammalian (rat) muscle extract, low enzyme activities are found in the cyclostome and two elasmobranchs from two families (Scyliorhinidae, Hexanchidae). In contrast, higher AMP-deaminase activities, similar to mammals, are expressed in Squalidae, all families of skates, Chimaeridae and in the teleostean fish. We then compared AMP-deaminase activities in red and white muscles from two representative elasmobranch fish, the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) and the thornback ray (Raja clavata). The fibre type composition and...

Effect of reproduction on escape responses, metabolic rates and muscle mitochondrial properties in the scallop Placopecten magellanicus ArchiMer
Kraffe, E; Tremblay, R; Belvin, S; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Marty, Y; Guderley, H.
In scallops, gametogenesis and spawning can diminish the metabolic capacities of the adductor muscle and reduce escape response performance. To evaluate potential mechanisms underlying this compromise between reproductive investment and escape response, we examined the impact of reproductive stage (pre-spawned, spawned and reproductive quiescent) of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, on behavioural (i.e., escape responses), physiological (i.e., standard metabolic rates and metabolic rates after complete fatigue) and mitochondrial capacities (i.e., oxidative rates) and composition. Escape responses changed markedly with reproductive investment, with spawned scallops making fewer claps and having shorter responses than pre-spawned or...

Guerra,Danilo Ribeiro; Reis,Francisco Prado; Bastos,Afrânio de Andrade; Brito,Ciro José; Silva,Roberto Jerônimo dos Santos; Aragão,José Aderval.
The anatomy of the psoas minor muscle in human beings has frequently been correlated with ethnic and racial characteristics. The present study had the aim of investigating the anatomy of the psoas minor, by observing its occurrence, distal insertion points, relationship with the psoas major muscle and the relationship between its tendon and muscle portions. Twenty-two human fetuses were used (eleven of each gender), fixed in 10% formol solution that had been perfused through the umbilical artery. The psoas minor muscle was found in eight male fetuses: seven bilaterally and one unilaterally, in the right hemicorpus. Five female fetuses presented the psoas minor muscle: three bilaterally and two unilaterally, one in the right and one in the left hemicorpus....

Unilateral Quadripartite Composition of Pectoral Major Muscle: Anatomical Description and Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Dhuria,Ruchi; Mehta,Vandana; Loh,Hitendra; Arora,Jyoti; Roy,Sanchita; Suri,Rajesh; Rath,Gayatri.
A unilateral anomalous disposition of the muscular slips of pectoralis major was observed in an adult male cadaver during routine gross anatomy teaching session. The pectoralis major muscle displayed unusual configuration and comprised of four parts delineated by three intramuscular clefts. Further, the sternocostal part was found to divide into two fasciculi. The origin and insertion of pectoralis major muscle was as usual and unremarkable. Interestingly, the innervation of the muscle was observed to bear an important variation. The clavicular and sternocostal slips of pectoralis major muscle received a direct branch from the lateral cord of brachial plexus in addition to its usual innervation from the lateral and medial pectoral nerves. The multiplicity...

Biceps Brachii Muscle Innervation Zone Location in Healthy Subjects Using High-Density Surface Electromyography International Journal of Morphology
Guzmán,Rodrigo A; Silvestre,Rony A; Arriagada,David A.
Among the sequelae of central nervous system injury is spasticity which is difficult to manage in rehabilitation. Current treatments consider the administration of the botulinum toxin. However, results have proved highly variable in terms of effectiveness, attributable to the distance between the injection site and the innervations-zone (IZ). High Density sEMG (HDsEMG) has been used to gather information about muscle physiology and for location of the IZ. The aim of this study was to characterize the IZ of the biceps brachii muscle in healthy subjects during isometric contraction. We assessed the biceps brachii muscle of twenty healthy subjects (n=20) using a 64 surface electrodes matrix. The average location of the IZ was 34% distal to the line between...

Newly-discovered muscle in the larva of Patella coerulea (Mollusca, Gastropoda) suggests the presence of a larval extensor Naturalis
Damen, Peter; Dictus, Wim J.A.G..
The development of the muscular system of the gastropod mollusc Patella has been thoroughly studied. As a result, two larval retractors, the main and accessory larval retractor, had been described in the larva of Patella. These muscles were supposed to be responsible for the retraction of the larval body into the shell. Previously no larval extensors, which would be responsible for the extension of the larval body out of the shell, have been described. Using cell-lineage tracer injection and phalloidin staining of muscles, a newly-discovered muscle is herein identified in the larva of Patella coerulea. A functional model is presented in which two muscles are responsible for the extension of the larva, the newly-discovered muscle together with the...

Kwiecień,M; Kasperek,K; Tomaszewska,E; Muszyński,S; Jeżewska-Witkowska,G; Winiarska-Mieczan,A; Grela,ER; Kamińska,E.
ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to determine the impact of caponisation of Polbar (Pb) and Greenleg Partridge (Zk) breeds on the production performance, carcass composition, and the nutrient content and fatty acid profile in the breast and thigh muscles and abdominal fat. From 18 weeks of age to the end of the experiment, the Zk capons were significantly heavier than the cocks. The Zk capons had higher (p≤0.05) weight and share of breast and leg muscles. At 24 weeks of age, we noted an increase in the total content of n-3 PUFA and linolenic acid C18:3 in the breast muscles of the Zk and Pb capons. The content of PUFA and n-3 PUFA in thigh muscles and the n6/n3 ratio were reduced in the Pb capons at 24 weeks of age, compared with the Zk cocks....
