Occurrence of chironomid larvae living inside fallen-fruits in Atlantic Forest streams, Brasil Entomología
Roque,Fabio de Oliveira; Siqueira,Tadeu; Trivinho-Strixino,Susana.
Occurrence of chironomid larvae living inside fallen-fruits in Atlantic Forest streams, Brazil - The Chironomidae larvae explore a wide variety of habitats and kinds of food. In this study we reported the use of fallen-fruits by chironomid larvae in low order streams in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We found chironomid larvae mining fruit tissue of 12 tree species. Seven morphospecies of Endotribelos were identified, including the species E. albatum and E. grodhaus found for the first time in Brazil. Our results suggest that larvae of Endotribelos are the commonest insect group living inside fallen-fruits in streams.

Aspects of reproduction and sexual dimorphism of Lygophis flavifrenatus (Dipsadidae: Xenodontinae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Quintela,Fernando Marques; Loebmann,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Lygophis flavifrenatus Cope, 1862 is a terrestrial dispsadid distributed in subtropical Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Herein, we present data on sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of this very poorly studied species. A total of 108 specimens (55 females, 50 males, three hatchlings with unidentified sex) from Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul were analyzed. Sexual dimorphism by size, body dimensions (tail length, head length, head width) and a number of ventral and subcaudal scales is not well marked in the species. Mature females attain the greater size and have a higher number of ventral scales than mature males. Mature males, in turn, presented longer tail, longer and wider head and...

On the millipede genus Heteropyge: description of the adults of H. araguayensis and revalidation of H. bidens (Diplopoda: Spirostreptida: Spirostreptidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Iniesta,Luiz F. M.; Bouzan,Rodrigo S.; Brescovit,Antonio D..
ABSTRACT The South American genus Heteropyge Silvestri, 1897 is revised, accommodating now six accepted species. Adults of the poorly known species Heteropyge araguayensis (Schubart, 1947) are described for the first time from near-topotypic material collected near the Araguaia River, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. In addition, based on recent samplings and on material from Schubart’s collection, H. bidens (Schubart, 1945) is removed from the synonymy of H. cayennophilus (Silvestri, 1897) and revalidated. Both species show significant differences concerning the gonopods and male leg-pair 1. New records and additional data for H. bidens and H. cayennophilus are provided, as well as an updated checklist of the species belonging to Heteropyge.

Assemblages of drosophilids (Diptera, Drosophilidae) in mangrove forests: community ecology and species diversity Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Schmitz,Hermes J.; Hofmann,Paulo R. P.; Valente,Vera L. S..
Brazilian fauna of drosophilids has been researched in various ecosystems, but those in mangrove forests remain overlooked in Brazil and elsewhere. The present study attempts to characterise the assemblages of drosophilids of this environment, based on 28 collections taken in three mangrove areas in Santa Catarina Island, southern Brazil. The three mangroves surveyed were different in their surroundings, which varied from highly urbanised areas to conservation areas with natural vegetation. Overall, 69 species were collected, and no remarkable difference was detected in species composition and abundances or in the richness, evenness and heterogeneity between sites. The species abundance distribution observed fitted to a theoretical lognormal distribution...

Environmental assessment in tropical streams by using abundance-biomass curves and W index in fish assemblages Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mise,Fábio T.; Message,Hugo J.; Pagotto,João P. A.; Goulart,Erivelto.
ABSTRACT We investigated the fish fauna response to different environmental conditions of urban (three) and rural (seven) streams through biomass/abundance curves and W index of environmental stress. Negative values of W indicate some level of stress, while positive values suggest environments with lower stress. Dissolved oxygen, marginal erosion (both left and right margins), mesohabitat diversity, and percentage of canopy cover were measured to characterize the 10 streams analysed around Maringá city, Southern Brazil. Fish were sampled by electrofishing, then identified and weighed. Results showed negative values of W to the urban streams and positive to the rural. Urban streams showed a tendency to have assemblages of fish with lower biomass and greater...

Three new species of Mesabolivar (Aranea, Pholcidae) from leaf litter in urban environments in the city of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Machado,Éwerton O.; Brescovit,Antonio D.; Candiani,David F.; Huber,Bernhard A..
In this study we describe three new litter inhabiting species of Mesabolivar González-Sponga, 1998 from nine urban forest remnants in the metropolitan region of the city of São Paulo, Brazil: M. forceps, M. mairyara and M. cavicelatus. In three of these remnants, we conduced a three year sampling using pitfall traps. Mesabolivar forceps sp. nov. was the most abundant pholcid (n=273 adults), always present in the samples, but with highest numbers in spring and summer. Mesabolivar mairyara sp. nov. was the second most abundant species (n=32), but the majority of individuals were collected in March 2001. Only three individuals of M. cavicelatus sp. nov. were collected.

Taxonomic revision of doubtful Brazilian freshwater shrimp species of genus Macrobrachium (Decapoda, Palaemonidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Pileggi,Leonardo G.; Mantelatto,Fernando L..
The freshwater prawns of the genus Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 are widely distributed in rivers of tropical and subtropical regions and represent an interesting group with controversial taxonomy. The morphological characters traditionally used to separate species have shown a high intraspecific variation. Doubts about the status of M. birai Lobão, Melo & Fernandes, 1986, M. holthuisi Genofre & Lobão, 1978 and M. petronioi Melo, Lobão & Fernandes, 1986 have been arisen due to the high resemblance of the former two species with M. olfersi (Wiegmann, 1836), and the latter one with M. potiuna (Müller, 1880). Therefore, we performed a detailed morphological analysis of these species, including new characters not usually used in the...
